2023⚽️🧤- for me, a year of applied research to goalkeeping: skilled intentionality when in-possession and defending the space, movement adaptability in 1v1s, coded goals analysis, tactical principles in Space Defence & much more…
➡️more GK research in the making for 2024👀
More than just colleagues…!
Thanks for everything that you have given to
@borussia
and our GK group, legend! All the best from here my friend!🧤⚽️🫶

THANK YOU und DANKE…

We talk about this all the time in training: this action of defending the space, for me, is as valuable as a big save in goal⚽️
Important: create these scenarios in training & guide perception towards key task/environmental constraints + explore tactical principles (positioning)

Worth mentioning the staff who have left Burnley with Dyche.
Like GK coach Billy Mercer, who had been with club 12 yrs. Helped develop 2 England keepers in

@fab_otte
Goal prevention from defending the space…often underestimated when evaluating GKs’ impact in games
Last game vs Berlin, Sommer faced numerous crosses of which 9 were claimed (4 catches & 5 punches). My colleague

ran these actions through his GK-specific algorithm:

As much as for players - all-in mentality, intrinsic motivation,being adaptable, tuning into environments and paying attention…!
Development AND Performance🤝
Love the ways that teams like Brighton or City build up and invite the opponent to press (including the GK’s role as an overload player with the intentionality to draw attackers in and control the rhythm!).
But this isn’t too bad either…😃😉
@borussia
Disappointing result today on the road! Still huge congrats & respect to you Jan for your debut in the Bundesliga!👊
Also the probably youngest GK group to ever be listed in a European top-tier match with Jan(20), Florian(17) and Tiago(16)⚽️🧤the future looks exciting
@borussia
Quick hands👐 but more important: holding a neutral and balanced set position as long as possible - however, this set position will look different for every GK (leave space for individuality!)
THAT ⚽️ MOMENT…
…on game day when the group goes out to warm up, play and transfer all the hard work from training days/months into competition…😄🤗

Good read for coaches:

Ever wondered how training MD-1 and the MD warm-up in the stadium could look? And more importantly WHY (based on the GKs’ thoughts)?
Some cool insights from our GK match preparation here👍💪 well done

Practice🤝Theory
Mastering complex GK demands may trad. be viewed re GK techniques. BUT there is much more to this: ‘Context is everything!’
👀Matt Turner defending the space for the USMNT-display of great ability to perceive key info from the environment to regulate action👏
Arsene Wenger: “The problem in football is that you learn how to play [the wrong] way round - first execution, then decision making and perception last.“ 🙏
Perception➿ Action… there is not one without the other!
Arsene Wenger 🗣️“The problem in football is you learn how to play the wrong way round - first execution, then decision making & perception last. I've lost many top players because their head was on the ball. They were not seeing what was around them."
“If you train people in the old authoritarian (command & control) way, they can only do what you’ve told them to do. But if you give them the big picture objective of what to accomplish, often they perform superbly-they can now think and learn and act for themselves” Pete Carroll
Power Day🏋️♀️💥… maybe not my most fav day due to the main focus on athletic topics (and some lack of game-realism compared our other sessions)… but certainly important as part of physical and performance training…and certainly fun for GKs to dive😊
One of the best and fun warm-up games that I first came across in England (many variations)⚽️🤗
The coach losing is obviously by design to drive GK motivation, rather than due to a bad first touch😉

Chance or no chance? -Goal analysis from a GK perspective
Recently, I analysed data from top GKs that I have been scouting (sample: 13GKs from different countries in Europe, 462 games, 715 goals) + qual-quant coded them. Limitations apply, just for reference & future research✌️
