. EarthCARE, "White Dragon", probes the mysteries of clouds and aerosols and the role they play in regulating the climate
Think you know
#clouds
? Think again!
#EarthCARE
will demystify these big and misty, often thin and wispy, and occasionally thunderous behemoths.
We’ll also shine a light on aerosols like pollution and dust, and how they and clouds regulate Earth's

Aerosols are even more mysterious than clouds!
Essentially, all cloud water droplets and ice crystals start with an aerosol particle. That could be a speck of wind-swept Saharan dust 🏜️ tiny soot particles from industrial pollution 🏭
🌪️ Windy Wednesday 🌪️
This time four years ago,
#Aeolus
tracked a whopping great "Godzilla" Saharan dust plume as wind whipped it over the Atlantic towards the Caribbean and South America 🌬️🏜️🍃
We look forward to
@esa_earthcare
's dust observations!

are mysterious ☁️🥷
Given they’re so big, fluffy and ubiquitous you'd be forgiven for thinking we might already know all there is to know about clouds. In fact, there's a lot we don’t know...
One of many reasons to be excited about

What's great about
#EarthCARE
's BBR is (1) the amazing 650-m resolution in nadir view (compare to 10-20 km for CERES) and (2) the extra perspective from the three views. Look at the different directions of the shadows (in blue) cast by clouds at top & bottom of this image! (2/3)

Look at this⬇️
#EarthCARE
broadband radiometer has delivered its initial data.
The instrument measures radiative fluxes at the top of 🌎atmosphere.
Global temperatures are rising, so understanding and monitoring the radiation balance is crucial.
Got exciting plans this weekend?
Nothing beats a lazy afternoon watching the

@ESA_EO
to discover just why they're so mysterious...
...and how EarthCARE will reveal the secrets of these ubiquitous, fluffy giants! 📺
We will use all four
@esa_earthcare
instruments to evaluate and improve how cloud and aerosol processes are represented in our weather forecast model.
The broadband radiometer (BBR) measures how much clouds and aerosols reflect sunlight and emit infrared energy.
One thing we'll do on this X account is bring you the latest updates on EarthCARE from the science community.
That includes the latest research, such as this 🆕

Although

play an extremely important role in atmospheric heating and cooling, they remain one of the biggest mysteries – in fact the least understood factor – in our understanding of how the atmosphere drives the climate system.
