I went to
@phish
's four-night
@SphereVegas
run, took a breather to process (and recover from) the experience, and gathered my thoughts for
@billboard
about why it was such an impressive concert feat
Midnights beating SOS for Album of the Year wouldn't be as depressing if Harry's House hadn't beat Renaissance & 25 hadn't beat Lemonade & 1989 hadn't beat TPAB & Morning Phase hadn't beat Beyoncé & Random Access Memories hadn't beat Good Kid & Babel hadn't beat Channel Orange &
In 2019, I wrote about BTS's live juggernaut for Pollstar. Forget competing with Olivia Rodrigo or Mars/.Paak – BTS's real business peers are U2, The Stones, Taylor Swift. That's why this sort of tut-tutting about hOw ThEy ToPpEd ThE cHaRtS is so tiresome
SCOOP: The Biden-Harris campaign is rolling out official yard signs for Animal Crossing: New Horizons today. It's part of the campaign's broader initiative to meet voters where they are online.
For
@Pollstar
's latest cover, I dived into the world of
@BTS_twt
, the K-pop group's unprecedented international touring success, and the undying devotion of
@BTS_ARMY
and
@USBTSARMY
.
Mainly just feeling total sadness, at everyone who is going to die, have their health permanently impacted, be financially ruined, and total hopelessness, at the widespread refusal to engage with science and America's unflinching commitment to capitalism at any cost
The Hot 100's methodology is super flawed, especially since it started integrating streaming plays. But it's interesting, to put it politely, that chart-toppers by other artists – some of which deploy similar chart-gaming machinations – don't garner this type of press
Dylan tour tweets are like "He covered 'Old McDonald Had A Farm' as a dirge. It was 37 beats per minute. Hadn't done that one in 19 years – never thought I'd see the day. He looked like he wanted to bludgeon his bassist. An eternal mischief maker. I would die for this man"
I for one wants a president who splits time between the gym and gaming on their phone, but can never drown out the sorrow of the true love who broke their heart long ago
@danozzi
Nothing says boss like cultivating a personality cult around being a liberal to your core and then ruling to *checks notes* literally allow a pipeline to tunnel under the Appalachian Trail!
I have close to zero respect for the charts as an accurate measure of popularity and success given all the ways things can be gamed, but I do think "actually this isn't legit because fans PAID FOR THE SINGLE" to be a bizarro world argument
Every Phish song is like
-awesome riff
-"Brie cheese / It's the bee's knees / Watch out, I'm gonna sneeze!"
-Trey and audience sneeze in unison
-20 minutes of insane jamming
-return of awesome riff
-Trey and audience sneeze in unison to end the song
Across venues big and small, artists loud and quiet, music of all genres, it's disappointing just how pervasive talking at concerts has gotten. Almost every show I go to now, regardless of where I am in the venue, there's chatting for at least some of the set
The 200 Best Albums of the Last 25 Years Tier List

Albums selected by Pitchfork.
Disagreements? Unlikely, because this is the community consensus.
But if you do have some, Create your own or remix this list here:
the alex g news makes me wonder if we’re about to hit another moment like in the 90s when major labels are gonna throw a bunch of money at weirdos like the flaming lips and ween and primus again, especially when like alex g and duster are the big viral acts now
Absolutely massive – AEG Presents announces vax-only (no neg test substitutions) policy implemented by October 1 for all patrons and staff. Until then, vax or neg test required. Applicable in all states where legal. Immediately industry-leading standard.
'Senator Sanders' classification of the dress as gold displayed a startling lack of understanding of the world around us. How could we endorse a candidate with such an alarming interpretation of such a divisive issue?'
CBS aired the most-viewed television broadcast in history on Sunday – and still initiated layoffs two days later. Never let anyone tell you these types of layoffs are due to a lack of profitability; they're due to a surplus of greed
The 'Spotify narrows listening habits' thing is always weird to me. I'm a voracious music consumer and use Spotify to access all sorts of niche stuff. Spotify certainly guides casual listeners to mainstream stuff – but so do the bestseller racks at the fronts of record stores
Got hit with this on a Pitchfork review for the first time this morning. If Conde ends up using this to institute a paywall... it's chilling to think what effect that will have on music discovery and for those trying to access 25 years of archival music writing
It's funny how New Yorkers can argue about almost anything, music fans can argue about almost anything, and yet, New Yorker music fans pretty much universally agree the city's worst venue is Terminal 5
“everyone has their fav venue” okay but everyone also has their ENEMY venue. im talking the fucking trenches. the venue where you walked out after a gig and SWORE you’d never go back (you definitely did go back). the venue that made you question your entire concert-going career
The funniest criticism of Mayer in Dead & Co is that he did it as a cash grab. His solo tours still make a killing. If he just wanted to make some extra dough... learning a band's huge catalog seems & putting himself under immense scrutiny is a pretty intense way to go about that
No more 'Ready to Start,' no more 'We Used to Wait.' The Fame Monster is now 2011 Album of the Year. You always feel like there's just something *missing* between Neon Bible and Reflektor, and wonder why it took them the better part of a decade to come up with 'Porno'
"Bipartisan deal-making," which Bernie Sanders is surprisingly good at, and symbolically introducing bills with a GOP cosponsor, which Sanders doesn't do, are completely different things. Not remotely the same.
This is so embarrassing for the Times.
Wild how Bernie didn't win the nomination, much less the general, but is still probably going to have a more positive impact on the lives of everyday Americans in 2020 and 2021 than Biden, who did both those things
People don't realize this, but while Pitchfork grades all genres other than emo on a 10/10 scale, it grades emo on an 8.1 scale. For an emo album, a Pitchfork 8.1 means it's perfect
Rihanna has collaborated with so many iconic artists and yet I have a looming sense of dread that the guest she's gonna end up bringing out today is DJ Khaled
@perpetua
I did a cover story about them for Pollstar in 2019 and that was the moment it all crystallized for me, like... breaking stadium gross records set by Taylor Swift and U2. But sure, they have no fans, who listens to this stuff anyway!
Millennial journalists get fired all the time for scheduling a tweet wrong or just because their boss woke up on the wrong side of the bed, but Jeffrey Toobin jerks off on a New Yorker staff Zoom and his dismissal is some big mystery that needs unpacking
Tired: wondering why Pavement has scored a massive hit a quarter-century later with a B-side of all things, complaining about the TikTokization of music and the charts, etc
Wired: admitting it's pretty cool Pavement now has a gold record
13 years of Graduation, a record oddly underrated in the Kanye canon, but one with some of his very best songs, simultaneously a culmination of one era and a preview of another. Few albums meant more to me as a teenager
There are some hilarious zingers but whatever your opinion of GVF (and I think the record is marginally better than a 1.6), the piece has a great broader thesis about streaming, algorithm-driven listening, etc
Out today: MAP OF THE SOUL: 7, the new
@BTS_twt
album. I wrote about the international BTS phenomenon – and how it has manifested in the live space – in September
I do not know a single Frank Ocean fan – and most people I know my age are Frank Ocean fans – who would object to him sitting in a chair with zero production and playing a full-length set
"Frank Ocean injured his leg and is unable to deliver the acrobatic spectacle his fans expect" is some next level PR voodoo, though, just epic levels of nobody believes this anyway so say whatever
So many examples of lo-fi indie-rockers going polished pop, and just once I'd love to see a big polished pop star drop a scrappy lo-fi indie-rock record
Irving: 'You announced your fuckin' retirement. What the fuck was that about? Who told you to announce your retirement?'
Nicki: 'Once again, another time where I shouldn't have had social media on my phone!'
