I didn't want to harp on about this, but given Mary Lou McDonald's hypocritical stance that her TD's should not face questions into their recently revealed conduct/public utterances, it's time for people to look behind the varnished veneer of SF towards the rest of their PP (1/n)
Must ask why
@SenatorKeogan
is re tweeting clear threats of violence against a TD,
@paulmurphy_TD
? I might disagree with Deputy Murphy on some policy points, but this incitement of hatred has no business in Irish politics and should not get tacit support of an Oireachtas member.
Unfollowing anyone that tries justify an attack on a politician, regardless of who it is. Politics of extreme polarisation spirals. We can laugh at it being a drink today. But it invariably gets worse. Far right already violently attacking people here. Only 4 years since Jo Cox!
The most telling part of this clip is the shots of Mary Lou looking like a deer caught in the headlights, then looking to the Ceann Comhairle to cut off the Taoiseach on time as he lays out the facts she'd just misrepresented.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin responds to Mary Lou McDonald, saying that she uses every situation to tell 'untruths': 'Why do you feel this need always to distort?' He adds that the Government extended wage supports into next year. | Read more

Seen a lot of SF supporters claiming they should be in Govt as the "won" the election. They didn't. FF won more seats.
Using GAA analogy, SF claiming they won is akin to a team who lost 1-16 to 1-15 but are claiming victory because they had 51% possession & hit a load of wides.
Have to say, I'm growing more and more pissed off at the private sector working from home lot, and non-frontline public sector workers, who are huge fans of extreme lockdown. It's the ultimate in "I'm alright Jack" crapology and utter upper middle class privilege on show.
Was sent this & asked to comment. This type of post gets way too much traction nowadays. Mad it's rarely questioned, showing how susceptible Ireland is to fake news. We like to scoff at others for falling for MAGA style stuff, but we're no different. Time for a breakdown (1/n)
This man wants to be Housing Minister!! When I did my bachelors thesis on housing development & the need to go high-rise, Dublin was tied with Istanbul as the worst planned city in OECD because of urban sprawl. Ó Broin here is championing further urban sprawl & land speculation.
If I was Dara Calleary, I'd agree to resign as Minister as soon as Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle O'Neill resigned as SF leader and NI DFM respectively for attending a funeral and fake burial which broke Covid regs. He has now apologised (something the other 2 haven't). End.
Literally every FF bashing thread from SF supporters I've seen here lately -
Shinner: "FF suck because of these things from the past".
AN Other: "But what about the things SF did in the past?".
Shinner: "You're living in the past man. Stop living in the past. SF 4 lyfe."
In her 1st week as a TD, Wynne has;
A) Had anti-vax messaged exposed,
B) Exposed as having shortchanged a charity €12,000,
C) Found to have sought to dismiss sexual abuse claims of a victim.
Undoubtedly there's more to come. When do SF pull to plug?
The guy wants to be Minister for Housing, yet is claiming that zoning (which his party have massively voted against) has nothing to do with housing provision. You couldn't make it up
Hope any book shop carrying his "tome" on housing is swiftly moving it into the fiction section.
One of the most dishonest posts on housing I have ever seen.
Most of these are not housing votes. They include controversial rezonings & public land transfers to private interests.
FG & FF created the housing crisis & now their online trolls are trying to blame everyone else!
If Govt sign off on this utterly baseless, unscientific bullshit from NPHET, they'll have signed their down death warrant and deserve to be removed from office. Hell, they'll even get me out on the streets at this rate!
NPHET clearly have lost the absolute run of themselves.
Completely and unacceptably disgraceful attack by
@bridsmithTD
on the independent judiciary. This is straight out of the Donald Trump book of populism. The law was unconstitutional; that's a function of Bunreacht na hÉireann, not the judge. Despicable behaviour.
If we have to go level 5 because of lack of ICU beds serious questions need to be leveled at
@LeoVaradkar
and his minority Govt. We locked down in March/April, sacrificing so much, in order to give Govt time to build capacity. If what we're hearing is true, that was squandered.
Going to start handing out stupid awards for those trying to compare a country with a land border, with trade @ +85% GDP & part of a multinational Union of shares rules, to an island nation over 4,000km from its nearest neighbour, with ~50% GDP trade & a quarter the pop density.
By all means, if SF's supposed policies are in line with yours (despite them enacting many of the opposite policies in Govt in NI) then give them a vote. However, if you've voting SF because you think they're progressive or woke, then review this thread and think again. (19/19)
Last night
@sinnfeinireland
& others in opposition voted against reserving 50% of all new housing for owner occupiers, and increasing stamp duty on investment funds.
This is opposition for opposition sake, hoping to prolong the housing crisis so they can mine it for votes. Shame
With 123 cases in Dublin today, the 7 day Covid-19 instance per 100k in Dublin is now at its lowest level since L3 restrictions were imposed on Dublin. 14 day instance is also down once again. Things are going in the right direction slowly but consistently. Keep it up Dublin.
The breakdown is as such (number of times group majority voted against a motion for housing development).
I4C 21, PBP 19, SF 16, SD 12, FF 2, GRN 2 LAB 2, FG 1.
(INDs not counted as a group)
For each vote details, see (3/3)
Yes, nightclubs are the problem, which is why, in the UK, where they've been open for months and mask wearing is non-existent they have......* checks figures *, half the infection rate we do. Couldn't possibly have anything to do with free antigen tests, no?

So let me get this straight....
The unions' motion has stated that unless Govt prioritise teachers for a vaccine by their Summer holidays, that they'll pursue industrial action in September... AFTER everyone in the country has received their jab anyway.
This makes no sense.
#LATEST
Motion carried by the teachers’ unions.
They’re giving the Government until the summer break to reprioritise teachers for vaccines - or they’ll ballot for industrial action which could see strikes in the new school year.
@VirginMediaNews
If you want to know what's wrong with SF, this is it in 1 tweet. According to this, they pretend the national flag is theirs, & theirs alone. The EU is a bad thing. And that the union jack is a weapon to aimlessly throw at people they don't like. Not to mention the antisemitism.
"Why do we even need

Have a look at the utterly false, hemophobic bile being thrown at a new, openly gay member of cabinet since his appointment.

@GAA__JOE
More rubbish "content" from a page that has completely lost all purpose. No quality punditry, just rubbish vox pops with wannabe "characters" (quite a few just being drunk), and this kinda wannabe "shock jock" eejitry trying to be controversial for clicks. Unfollowed!
(8/8) Overall, claims in the post are populist nonsense with no basis in fact or reality. Yes, we've issues in the country that need fixing & Govt can + should do more. However suggestion a revolt is needed as this is some kinda kip is Trumpist, MAGA rubbish & needs calling out.
When you only run 42 candidates & therefore, mathematically cannot lead any Government, it's easy to make €14 billion worth of promises because they'll never have to back them up. SF have no intention of being near Government so this manifesto doesn't need figures to stack up!
SF promising:
abolition of USC on first €30k earned - cost €1.2bn
abolish the LPT - cost €485 million
End 3rd level fees - cost €243 million
Reduce childcare costs - cost €500 million
Return retirement age to 65 - cost €368 million per year

Have some issues with Govt response during pandemic myself but Irish Twitter needs to get a grip.
- When numbers low: "We're doing well because of the people not the Govt!"
- When numbers shoot up: "This is all the Govt's fault. You can't talk about personal responsibility."
🙃
Is anyone is Irish media actually challenging these ridiculous statements?
@TJRyan_77
has ZERO background in logistics, and to my knowledge, has no practical experience in vaccinations or their mass roll out. Pronouncement below is utterly baseless scaremongering without context.
Clare's new SF TD, just last December, tweeted in support of someone involved in an IRA bombing who killed 4 & injured 31, who had, a day earlier, received bail. The excuse that past atrocities should be left in the past contradicts SF policy on historic British army atrocities.
This is the standard political misinformation we regularly see in Ireland now. 1st off, I have no ties & no real interest in these sports. However, facts are important & this tweet is straight from a Trumpian playbook to serve a particular agenda.
Let's break it down (1/5)
Tonight I have written to the President of

regarding the 4% increase the college is placing on rents for on-campus accommodation. If this goes ahead, I will have to reconsider my position as a member of Údarás na hOllscoile. I hope this decision is swiftly reversed.
This story is not correct. Virus growth in Dublin has slowed down in past week and is not "growing exponentially" (see graphs below). You won't get the public on board with your public health message by lying to them. People aren't idiots!
Pandering to the Twitterati. 🙄 And Ireland's unique, once in a lifetime chance to cement its position at the centre of EU-US relations, post Brexit, will slip us by.....all because of the modern equivalent of the Liveline brigade.
Definition of fake news. 400 of the 500 houses built on this mixed development will be social and affordable. The alternative was 0 houses. Paul and co actually want the housing crisis to continue to try make political capital from it. It's a sickening, cynical stance to take.
Last night Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, the Greens and Labour voted to sell-off public land for private development on South Dublin County Council. I don't think they got the message from the election.
Who else thinks that when this lockdown is finally over that a bank holiday should be declared so Irish people will be encouraged to support our hospitality, tourism and retail industries which have been so badly hit?

...sudden portrayal of that party as representing some form of new standard in politics is patently false. Mary Lou's insistence on her TD's not facing questions for their bad behaviour, while demanding the opposite of all other shows SF leadership acting in bad faith. (18/n)
Must say, from my own experience this last week, really has shown up NPHET's opposition to antigen testing as a complete folly! Would never have known I was infected with Covid but for taking one, and given I'm double vaxxed with Pfizer, I'd never have suspected it either.
@GeorgeTakei
Watching this from Europe where we don't need security in our schools at all because we don't let everyone go around with assault rifles. America, get your act together already!
Going alphabetically.
Chris Andrews (TD - DBS) had been an FF Cllr on DCC, until he was exposed for running a highly misogynistic & defamatory Twitter account. He jumped from FF to SF as he was facing expulsion. Mary Lou has never asked him to explain his behaviour. (2/n)

Certain parties who went apoplectic that Govt deviated from NPHET advice are now openly calling for measures that, to my knowledge, NPHET have advised against. Trying to keep up with all the hypocrisy in Irish politics is exhausting at times.
@nealerichmond
The people of Clare expected more from the Irish Government than to celebrate Crown Forces that committed atrocities on innocent Clare citizens in West and East Clare as well as the town of Ennis. It's a blatant act of historical revisionism.
John Brady (TD - Wicklow).
SF's foreign affairs spokesman faces calls to explain sharing social media posts defending the Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad, in the wake of his use of chemical weapons, and even claiming it was a false flag attack. (3/n)

Dr. Holohan has decades long profile as an anti-alcohol campaigner. With zero cases linked to the hospitality sector since re-opening, one has to wonder whether his leadership of NPHET is being influenced more by his prejudiced position on alcohol instead of the scientific data.

Martin Browne (TD - Tipp)
Browne got himself in hot water recently for comments on the PIRA campaign, saying SF should stop apologizing for the death and destruction caused. He is in further bother relating to a link he posted on Facebook to false 9/11 conspiracy theories. (4/n)
This is piss poor by
@thejournal_ie
. Claiming voting to block land being zoned for housing isn't a vote against housing provision is just WRONG. Inherently & fundamentally. It's the 1st step in housing provision, without which nothing can happen. (1/2)
With all the final figures totaled here is how the parties fared over the weekend compared to the last time the public went to the polls and cast their ballot:
From 2020 to 2024:
FG +2.1%
FF +0.7%
SF -12.7%
GP -3.5%
LAB +0.9%
SD +0.5%
IND/O +11.9%
That tells a story!

Pearse Doherty (TD - Donegal)
Doherty appeared alongside Gerry Adams at the now infamous Storey funeral. Covid regs on both sides of the border prohibited his attendance. Yet he did, and even played a prominent role in the mock paramilitary style burial. Storey was cremated (8/n)

credibility in one sound bite. What an absolutely outlandish, out of touch, utterly bonkers thing to call for. Tell me you know nothing about construction without telling me you know nothing about construction.
There was no housing crisis when FF left Government. In fact, SF were attacking FF at the time for allowing construction of too much housing. Those 2 stances are entirely contradictory. FF are the only party with a history of mass public housing construction programs in Ireland.
So many people, including myself, gave the Govt grief about the start of the vaccine roll out in Ireland, citing success in the UK. Same people calling this tweet from An Taoiseach distasteful had no issue months ago doing similar comparisons themselves when it was the reverse.
The vaccine rollout is continuing at great pace.
Today we edged ahead of our nearest neighbours - a brilliant effort by everyone involved.
➡️Ireland: 72.4% of adults fully vaccinated
➡️UK: 72.1% of adults fully vaccinated
Réada Cronin (TD - Kildare N)
Cronin was embroiled in controversy earlier this year when antisemitic social media posts were brought to light where she actively promoted an odd conspiracy theory that Mossad had intervened in the UK general election against Jeremy Corbyn. (5/n)
Aengus Ó Snodaigh (TD - DSC)
The exact circumstances surrounding the infamous 'Inkgate' affair where the Deputy's Oireachtas office supposedly used €50,000 in ink cartridges between 2007 & 2008 has never been fully explained sufficiently (IMO anyway). (14/n)

On his re-election last February, Cullinane courted controversy when video of his victory speech apparently glorifying the PIRA campaign emerged. (6/n)
Has anyone a list of these 50 Councillors? I wanna ensure I don't canvass for any of them again. FF should be about putting the country first, not party and certainly not self interest. I've seen no legit policy issue any of these people have put to their call for a No vote.
Violet Anne Wynne (TD - Clare)
Wynne quickly found notoriety post her election following revelations that she had left a housing charity in the whole for €12k in rent arrears. The charity was forced to shut down. She was also discovered to have shared antivaxx sentiment. (16/n)
Absolutely brilliant piece by Jody Corcoran in today's Sindo.

Does
@MariaBaileyFG
want to see all playgrounds in Dublin shut as the swings aren't supervised? We have insurance costs closing sports clubs around the country yet here's a TD fully jumping on the compensation culture bandwagon.
Johnny Guirke (TD - Meath West)
Guirke was quick to defend his college Cullinane following the latter's PIRA glorifying celebration in February. He's not been as quick to speak about bullying/intimidation allegations within SF in his locality that saw a young woman resign (10/n)
Pa Daly (TD - Kerry)
In June, Daly was found to have broken Covid19 restrictions, travelling 60km to attend a SF activist's funeral. Although many would have sympathy for the reason, many more who could not see off loved ones remain annoyed Daly received no reprimand. (7/n)
Darren O'Rourke (TD - Meath E)
Appeared on local radio recently to defend the practice within SF of sending former IRA convicts to activists houses to tell them to delete social media posts critical of the party or certain individuals. (12/n)
Patricia Ryan (TD - Kildare S)
Ryan came to prominence as a new TD that went on holiday in the last week of the election campaign. It was, this week, discovered that she too had actively spread bizarre 9/11 conspiracy theories on her social media. (13/n).

as if it mattered a damn. However, let's apply their desire for a FPTP system in Ireland based on the Feb election & constituencies. The below would be the result. I wonder do they still want it now?
(2/n) First claim is that taxation (presumably personal) is "insane". This is demonstrably untrue crap. We've one of the most progressive taxation systems. Don't take my work, here's the stats from Eurostat. Amongst the lowest rates for low earners and midtable for high earners.
There is no variant proven to be vaccine resistant. Also a huge & growing body of evidence that vaccines prevent transmission.
This is tosh. Looking at hypothetical but unlikely events as a means to base public policy is nonsense. If we did that, full lockdown would never end.
Negatives tests are not sufficient due to incubation cycles. People can transmit the virus after vaccination. Vaccine escape variants exist and are a growing risk as new ones evolve. That's the beginning of the story.
Just remember that if you vote for Peter Casey today, you automatically give up any right to give out about Trump or the people who voted for him. You'll be the same as them, falling for the same tactics to elect someone equally unsuited for the office.

There is racism in Ireland. This isn't it.
Thomas Gould (TD - Cork NC)
Another one of the Bobby Storey funeral attendees in breach of Covid regulations. Attempted to claim that all regs, including physical distancing were adhered to despite clear evidence to the contrary. (9/n)
@sean_leen
This is a disgraceful comment to make, especially in light of the university's policy of supporting minorities and being a tolerant, inclusive space. You know many of the people you teach are of the LGBT community, yes?
Brian Stanely (TD - Laois/Offaly)
The TD's who's comments kicked all this off recently. Not only did his comments about PIRA campaign get him in trouble but allegedly homophobic comments and conspiracy theory peddling have also come to light from his social media accounts (15/n)
Ruairí Ó Murchú (TD - Louth)
Another of the posse who flaunted Covid-19 travel restrictions and hoped the border to attend the Bobby Storey funeral. (11/n)
I think it's beginning to sink in with some people that Eoin Ó Broin's contribution to housing policy via his book is on par with what E.L. James' writing gave to the romantic fiction genre!
Funnily enough, it also belongs in the fiction section.

(6/n) We've very few tolled roads in Ireland. Schools and Unis are largely public. Hospitals too. Trains are all public. Electricity network with Eirgrid. Not sure how anyone can claim Ireland's infrastructure is "privatised for huge gain". That's just false.
This election has been nothing short of a disaster for Fianna Fáil. Very hard to see how Martin remains on as leader. A change has to be made, if not in the short term, certainly the medium term.
