It’s almost like… diluting the meaning of those words… makes trauma recovery for abuse victims more alienating, thus ensuring that systemic abuse can continue unchallenged 😶
@KaylaAncrum
Full credit to Amber Midthunder for getting me to look past the wig to appreciate her performance, but I’d expect nothing less from an actress who slayed the predator!
@sophie_frm_mars
Sophie, I’m in Nashville, this reporting’s so much worse than that; bc while the shooter’s motives are still being verified, it’s come out since then that there was a CSA coverup around the time the shooter attended the school.
@suchnerve
@LogOffAlready
My high school sophomore English teacher accused me of that exact thing…
Bc I was looking directly at him and then moved my eyes as I turned around.
*stewardess voice* “Pls keep all eyes absolutely still focused on a fixed point ahead of you until you complete the turn.”
@sophie_frm_mars
This kind of reporting is doing the heavy lifting for the far right on two fronts: targeting the trans community while simultaneously running cover for the abuse of children endemic to Christian faith communities.

Pro-tip: unironic use of the word “primitive” to describe other people during the Holocene signals a >99% chance that what follows is anti-Indigenous settler-colonial drivel.
Overlap with fascist tendencies also likely.

People forget, but Southern Appalachians went up against the literal army in the largest labor uprising in American history just over 100 years ago.
And on the strength of unions, registered Democrats in KY outnumbered Republicans until about 2020.
We just have to remember.
@DrtySexyHistory
Additional cool Boudicca fact: in Proto-Brittonic, the word “boudi” or “boudis” meant profit, gain, or victory.
I’m not sure if that was reason enough for Queen Victoria to choose it for her regal name, but it’s certainly compelling!
@FRlDAKHALIFA
THAT IS ENTIRELY FAIR.
Whereas my experience was reading it on my own, being emotionally devastated, realizing it was based on a true story, and then having no one to discuss any of it with 😞
@kjuanitabrown
As a former historic interpreter at a Presidential site, I love you for this! Takes some of the pressure off us and lends some support when we’re the only ones speaking uncomfortable truths otherwise! We’re often dying to answer the questions nobody wants to ask, anyway.
@JoshuaPHilll
Love that whoever edited this video left out the most potent phrase in the Southern vernacular when wielded in anger: “[And I’ll tell you what,] the men in that church told me it was MY fault!”
@j_n_foster
As a fellow medievalist, love this.

See, it’s funny that you say that bc the only common thread in production that links the worst parts of ATLA canon is Mike & Bryan.
Read the novels instead. They had almost nothing to do with those, & it shows.
@Blike_Dante
Now, you see, when the lords didn’t respond appropriately to the economic pressures of the labor shortage caused by the Black Death, the peasants went & grabbed their pitchforks. Multiple times, actually.
Seems about time we remind the neofeudal lords what that was like.

@alissacaliente
But also, y’all do know Pennsyltucky exists, right? Like, by no means am I saying PA is a southern state; but it is an Appalachian state, and as such, comprises rural regions where people speak with an Appalachian accent, more typically associated with the Upper South.

Hey quick questions—when did you stop seeing other people as human beings? And does that make you happy? Is your life in any way now enriched for having left this reply?

Tell me you’ve never had an abusive parent without telling me you’ve never had an abusive parent lol.
My dad made me want to die by the age of 11. Now he has early-onset dementia and *extra* can’t remember the way he treated me. We don’t talk, and I’m better for it.

This is why I appreciate the Hades quest to reunite Patrochilles so much: they’re both dead, but they end up TOGETHER & HAPPY in the underworld 😭
The end of Song of Achilles had a similar vibe, tho I didn’t expect how it would end (& the experimentation with POV was amazing).
Tapping the sign to defer to Natives on this one.
I still stand by teaching it (bc it was weird to me that we weren’t talking about it at all at my school?), but only if it’s from a critical lens.
Children can absolutely tell it was never written from Juana’s perspective.

And survivors of trauma 😶 Depending on the severity/nature, it can affect your whole nervous system. My husband survived meningitis as a teen which resulted in scarring all over his brain. Now he has daily migraine & sensitivities to all kinds of stimuli: light, smell, sound…

While I doubt it’ll be this that does it, I can also tell you from personal experience to never EVER give the Lord an opening to go, “BET.”
You *will* regret it.

Insane that those elderly men even feel the need to open the door, tbh. I’m an anxious millennial, and I’ll just pretend not to be home 😩
Like, I know older generations operated under different norms, but has it just… not occurred to them? At all???
Saw some tweets alluding to the “Dark Ages,” & I cannot stress to you enough that—where it was possible to obtain—an early medieval education would’ve still included Philosophy, (Christian) Religious Studies, & Music.
So this is worse than the Dark Ages actually!
Today it was confirmed that Art History will be ‘phased out’ at the University of Kent – along with Anthropology, Journalism, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Music.
What a tremendous loss.

Urban deer’ll surprise you sometimes. I once saw a doe walking with her fawn alongside a busy stretch of a 5-lane road. Realized she was teaching the young one where to graze safely & when to cross if at all, like a river.

@alissacaliente
My husband went to school with her (few years apart) in Hendersonville TN. Not sure how long, but enough that she later donated funds towards new play equipment for a local park. But to your point, I suspect the accent was learned later & so may sound a bit affected.
Donald Sutherland really ate with that role. And if you watch any of his interviews from that time, he’s very clear that he joined the project specifically to raise the political consciousness of young people.
I hope he’s seeing the impact he’s had everyday on the news.

Like the fall of the Roman Empire, it depends on which date/year, you’re making the case for—and in particular, if you’re arguing pre- or post-Norman invasion England—as to when the British Empire “started.”
(And even the term “British” itself is complicated.)
@vinn_ayy
This is so validating bc when one of us has done something slightly wrong or inconvenient, my husband & I will literally sing at the offender, “DECEPTION! DISGRACE!”
Glad to know we’re not the only ones using this meme!

I realize this may be difficult to understand, but two things can be bad at the same time. I also realize that hurt people hurt people, and I’m sorry if you’re feeling that way right now. Hope your day gets better!
@madtranny
There’s one account of the bubonic plague in particular I’m thinking of where this medieval dad is recounting each of his children who died that he had to bury that’s absolutely gutting to read. People have always been people.
@maxxdavids
@johnniejae
Dunno if you missed it, my guy, but you’re in a Native woman’s thread defending the film like it’s some beef between fandoms—as if Indigenous people would not have their own *nuanced* thoughts & concerns about it. Maybe listen as to what those are for a sec?
@jenjajeh
They’re really not, though. Honestly, if they’d had *any* foresight whatsoever, they’d’ve heeded the example of the Black Death during the initial surges of Covid-19 & minimized the resultant population loss as much as possible. Every excess death ceded power to the working class
@degs99
@alicel44
@erinbiba
So they eventually did have some understanding of disease transmission. The real problem were the later variants which were pneumatic, eerily like our present situation with omicron and its subvarients.

I am so serious when I say that studying the Irish language and learning why my (Irish surname) family couldn’t speak it is what fully radicalized me.
Whiteness is one hell of a drug!

@AllForThe6_4
And we act like historical people were somehow different from us; but when Angolo buried his five children, it hurt every single time.
Now we’re barely removed from that level of child death, & it’s like pulling teeth to get some parents to vaccinate their children.
@masonmennenga
@socrafella
We really do, though! And I love that for us, tbh.
The fuddy-duddy converts & theologically illiterate tradcaths can make like Bacéne when he confronted his sister, St. Brigid.
Really, anyone who’s allergic to fun, actually!
@degs99
@alicel44
@erinbiba
Hi, medievalist here! While all that is technically true, there *were* early attempts at inoculation, amazingly enough. IIRC, the idea came later in the initial outbreak to… ingest the… contents of a drained bubo from an infected patient. (Yes, ew.)
@CoraCHarrington
Friendly reminder: the structural weakness inherent to the Electoral College is the 12th Amendment. Winning candidate reaches 270 or it goes to the House!
Nebraska & Maine have key districts for 3rd party candidates to organize bc the electoral votes can be divvied up!
@AdrianCJax
What’s even more hilarious is that country music plays in Irish pubs all the time. They just didn’t really bother filming themselves dancing to it before now!
@DarthSarcastus

Common misconception! The “medium” part of that means she talks to dead people, and was likely bombing with them too; otherwise, they might’ve warned her.
@chronicallybeee
My best advice for that kinda situation? Just respond, “Ok.” And leave it that. Just 2 letters is all she gets. Bc she wants a response out of you, & you give her one, but without the satisfying setup that allows her to play the victim. People like her HATE that shit 😈
@StorySorcery
And it’s a damn shame! Coulda spent all that time addressing the fragility of their ego to, like, actually process accountability for once.
@bf_crane
Everybody commenting on this casting choice missing the obvious point: Ellie has bangs. A simple haircut would’ve made a world of difference in the framing of the face.
Sir, please know this is a grave insult to Irish spelling as its rules are infinitely more consistent than English, and this word follows none of them.
@DeadDogLake
My husband has daily migraine & is really sensitive to loud noises like children’s screams. It’s one of our considerations about having kids, actually.
And he’d still prefer a happy baby. The angry/upset shrieks are worse, & he has noise-canceling earbuds 🤷🏻♀️
@calmadore
@swankaids
@josefbutwithanF
@alissacaliente
Tbh, I think that’s bc the country music industry sells a caricature of the way real people speak & act. She likely got the accent in her ear by her teen years but exaggerated it to sell a product, as instructed by someone managing her then. That also made it easy to drop.
@anteateradvance
@manga_librarian
@marris116
Which is some real ableist bs bc even for people who *can* see, some brains just struggle with the written word.
Hell, there are entire cultures with strong oral storytelling traditions—purely from memory! Are we also supposed to look down on that as reading?
