When I started working on the bacterial flagellar motor, our goal was to get high resolution structures of the C-ring. I optimised the whole basal body prep around keeping that region intact. It is so satisfying to see our original goal fulfilled!

THESIS SUBMITTED!
The past 3.5 years have been pretty incredible and though I’m relieved, I’m also sad my PhD over. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of my PhD journey, particularly the

lab - I couldn’t have picked a better place to spend 3 years of my life!
Our June issue is now live with bacterial flagellum assembly on the cover!
Discover how S. epidermidis becomes pathogenic, a parasitic ultrasmall bacterium that can stop wastewater foaming, how gut Clostridia mimic human signalling compounds, and more.
Very pleased that I eventually made it to Coffs Harbour for

I retweeted this article earlier in the week, but it’s worth retweeting it again.
“When a woman speaks in a professional setting, she walks a tightrope. Either she’s barely heard or she’s judged as too aggressive…”
Walking this tightrope is exhausting!
Great article on misogyny in academia

Looking forward to spending the Christmas-New Year break with my family 😄
Four years ago today I graduated with my BSc(Hons) and was super anxious about starting my PhD. A lot has changed since then but (surprisingly) I have the same hair cut and colour!
On Wednesday night I’m speaking to the Rotary Club that sponsored me to attend the Siemens Science Experience 10 years ago. Really looking forward to it but reflecting on the past 10 years is making me quite emotional 😭 14-year-old Emily didn’t even know what a PhD was!
Got hold of a picture of me from 2009 (thanks Mum!), so here is my 2009-2019.
High school semi-formal to PhD graduation day.
Now, should I dye my hair dark brown again? 🤔
Today the spotlight goes to
