So, if the police know the alleged shooter in Portland was a homeowner, they must know his identity. And if they know his identity, why hasn’t he been arrested? And if he is at large, why hadn’t his identity been revealed so he can be arrested? The PPB story just doesn’t add up.
Last night my friend, chair of History Dpt.
@lewisandclark
, was shot in the head by Trump's goons. If you know Mo, you know she is the most peaceful protestor one can imagine. As an act of solidarity, I ask that all of you who have stayed home to get out on the street tonight.
1- The recent mass shooting in Portland raises the issue of the way the police routinely misinform the public and how some media outlets uncritically parrot the framing of the police. This is not just a matter of "semantics" as Chief Lovell has claimed.
2- Labelling shooter as a "homeowner" made it seem like the protestors had trespassed or confronted the shooter on his property. This is completely untrue. It is not only that the shooter was not a homeowner, but the impact of that label in framing the event that is dangerous.
“Guards were telling us that we couldn’t wear masks," said the inmate. "The [two units] stood up and said, 'No, you don’t get to dictate our health. We outnumber you and we’re not going to take it anymore.”
It’s amazing how little real information the public has almost 24 hours after a fatal shooting f of a protestor. With the shooting taking place at a public demonstration, there must be scores of eyewitnesses.
3- When
@Oregonian
reporter
@shanedkavanaugh
denied the paper had ever used the "homeowner" descriptor in a DM to me, he asked me to publicly acknowledge my mistake, which I did, believing I was wrong. It turns out the paper used the "homeowner" language in its headline.
6- One would think that journalists, who are supposed to be professional skeptics, would pause before swallowing the police rendition of events, especially after being lied to repeatedly. Journalists are crucial to a democracy, and they have a responsibility to being truthful.
@Oregonian
@shanedkavanaugh
4- Other media outlets across the country echoed this false narrative including
@USATODAY
and
@CNN
. Even after it has been made clear that the shooter was not a homeowner, none of these outlets have publicly acknowledged their participation in spreading misinformation.
5- While we must all give grace to each other to make mistakes, when your mistake is pointed out, you should acknowledge it and put processes in place to make sure it doesn't happen again. The damage has already been done by
@Oregonian
and other news outlets.
If the media reported police killing residents the way they report crime, you would see headlines like "Portland Police shooting and killings of residents spike, rising 400% from 2020 to 2021."
We don't see those headlines, but regularly see year-over-year reports of crime.
7- I hope the
@Oregonian
will acknowledge the harm it did and learn from its mistakes. We need journalism, but most importantly we need journalists who are willing to ask tough questions of authorities and not serve uncritically as mouthpieces of government misinformation.
4 years ago, Portland voted to elect a Black woman to city council whose policies were crystal clear and who said she would always speak her mind. She took office and delivered on her promises. Now, many of those same people voted her out. Hardesty didn't change, the voters did.
It turns out that the only description of the shooter provided by PPB that he was a "homeowner" is untrue. If PIO was worried about getting the story right, he should probably not have led with misinformation and then refused to provide any other relevant info.
Measure 112 in Oregon wants to eliminate the constitutional exemption that allows slavery for people in prison. This is a no-brainer, unless, of course, you still support slavery in 2022.
After a robust meeting tonight with over 130 people,
@PCCEPportland
passed recommendations to "defund the police and refund the community" and to ban chemical weapons, flash-bang grenades and sound weapons. The indignation of the community was palpable.
Here's a still picture of one of the Patriot Prayer fascists in red baseball helmet right after assaulting a counter-protestor by kicking him repeatedly while on the ground.. From
@itsmikebivins
video. Portland
@PortlandPolice
do your job and arrest him.
Portland Police go on shopping spree to buy the chemical weapons and other munitions used against protestors. Defunding the police is also about taking away their unlimited credit cards.
Portland police blame accountability laws as cause of their decision to stand back while fascists and anti-fascists clashed on city streets. In Latin America, this is called a failed state.
Portlanders voting for candidates who promise more cops to deal with homeless people living on the streets are going to be pretty disappointed when they realize that cops can't solve the problems caused by lack of affordable housing, and mental health and addiction services.
"“Portland has proven abolishing the police doesn’t work."
Mingus Mapps, a political scientist, should know better. You can't prove something didn't work when it never happened. The effort to defund failed. What is not working is the same old policing.
If the Portland police cannot even solve the mystery of how a slide ended up in their own training presentation, why should we trust them to solve violent crimes?
Now that the air quality index is 526 in Portland, I wish there were some advice from medical professionals about when it was no longer safe to be here.
That's a huge cop-out. The fact is, shootings in NYC have been basically flat for 2 years, but mentions of shootings in local news spiked from 100/mo in Jan 2021 to over 800/mo now.
You cannot look at this chart and tell me that didn't influence public perception of safety.
Voted for the candidate who is responsible for Portland Street Response, the single most important effort to improve public safety. The other candidate is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
This image of an exhausted 4-year-old girl, collapsing on the road and refusing to walk any farther is tragic. Photo from the caravan.
My heart is bleeding 😭😭😭
When Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler accuses protestors of “attempting to commit murder,” this is an example of hyperbole.
Not accurate.
Not helpful.
Not deescalation.
If people know the address of the house from where the shooter emerged, then it would take a few minutes on Portland Maps to figure out his identity given that the police have said he was the "homeowner."
Total BS. Portland is one of the few cities in the country with a net-positive in-migration of college graduates. People are leaving high-priced cities because of unaffordable housing and remote work, but keep up the fear mongering.
Commissioner Gonzalez claims “heavy drug use” in tents as a reason to ban the city from distributing them. By this logic we should ban all housing because heavy drug use also occurs in homes.
Given that Jordan Schnitzer is offering his downtown properties at $250 a month, the $27 million Mayor Wheeler proposes to spend on camps would buy each of the 6000 homeless people with 16 months of rent. Perhaps Rene can broker the deal.
.
@PeteButtigieg
knows what he should say about racism in the criminal justice system, but when pushed by the moderator on his record he reverts back to racist theories about super predator gangs and gun violence as an excuse for disproportionate policing of black folk.
Amazing data analysis by Claire Brumbaugh-Smith, Masters student at PSU, showing Portland police used tear gas at least 100 times between May 28 and June 30.
data:

Jo Ann Hardesty is not perfect. She has made some gaffes in her time in office. She is human. In this election, we are faced with a choice between Nixonian "law and order" politics and a humane response to homelessness, crime and public safety. Vote your conscience Portland.
A judge has found Portland in contempt for police use of force, the oversight officer has found the city out of compliance with the DOJ settlement agreement for the same reason, and yet 5 months after protests began, not a single officer has been disciplined.
If you believe in getting dark money out of politics, you can start by not voting for the people supported by such money. In Portland, that means don't vote for Rene Gonzalez and in Oregon, do not vote for Christine Drazan.
Recipe for disaster: defund police, eliminate the gang violence unit, eliminate gun task force, a DA who won’t prosecute, no accountability for rioters, keep jail beds empty. Hello, Ted, Deborah, Mike, Kate? This city and its people need leadership now.
My column in the Houston Chronicle arguing that getting the Feds out of Portland is only one step. The local police have been brutalizing protestors, Black Portlanders, people with mental illness, and the homeless for years. Portlanders are not fooled.
Portland appears to have the dubious distinction of being number one in the country for use of force against houseless people, more than half of incidents.
One-third of all police use of force incidents in Los Angeles and half of all police use of force incidents in Portland are against houseless people. These are some of the only police departments that publish this information.
New data shows the Portland Police are spending most of their resources harassing homeless people. Mayor
@tedwheeler
and Chief of Police Outlaw, what are you doing to stop this egregious misuse of police resources?
An investigation shows homeless people make up no more than 3% of Portland’s population, but 52% of all arrests made last year. Read about this in our weekly newsletter on criminal justice issues in the Pacific Northwest: Subscribe:
Drug overdoses are up in Oregon. True.
Drug overdoses are up in many cities across the country. Also true.
Drug overdoses in Oregon are up due to decriminalization measure. False.
Correlation does not equal causation.
Almost everybody in the city now lauds Portland Street Response, but when it was started, city council was skeptical and a majority of council voted against expanding it citywide last spring. One council member designed it and pushed for its funding.
Hint: Her initials are JH.
Michael Ray Townsend, who was killed by Portland police last week, apparently was the one to call 911 because he was suicidal. Imagine calling for help and getting shot and killed by the people who you called?
There has to be a better way to disarm a man with a screwdriver.
PPS is cutting 121 positions from elementary and middle schools, while there is no budget crisis. At the same time, they gave raises to top district administrators. Why is the school board endorsing stealing teachers from kids to give bonuses to failing administrators?
Can you imagine a corporation that would threaten to leave a city because someone’s home burned down near their headquarters? Instead of offering help, Salt & Straw wants to pack up its waffle cones and flee to the burbs. Enjoy your gated community.
The DOJ letter to the PPB outlining their failure to follow their own policies and constitutional limits to use of force is shocking in how it reveals a complete breakdown in accountability structures. I will quote from some of the most egregious examples below.
When a write-in candidate is polling at 5% a few weeks before an election, there is no way they will win. They can, however, make the difference and throw the election to the more conservative incumbent.
It's interesting that increased gun violence and homicides got blamed on brief 2020 cut in PPB funding by 15 mil and
@JoAnnPDX
, but now that PPB budget is at record high, FIT team in place, gun violence and homicides are skyrocketing. Haven't seen any articles blaming PPB.
Why is the PPB referring to the shooter as a “homeowner”? I’m not sure I understand how his property ownership is relevant to the story. Would he be described as a “renter” or a “Tesla stock owner”? Do homeowners have more right to kill protestors?
While it may be a good idea to not have houseless folks living on busy thoroughfares, how about allowing them to pitch tents on the pastoral East Moreland golf course?
What if this whole Wheeler plan regarding a crackdown on homeless camps is actually a ploy to influence the upcoming election ? Given that no funding or partners have been identified and no sites actually confirmed, the timing is suspicious.
You can't tell me that officers in the Portland Police Bureau don't know who officer 67 is. This is a coverup and it's the job of the chief of police and the police commissioner to get to the bottom of it. If you believe in accountability, it starts here.
If you are going to move unhoused people’s camp sites from dangerous streets, then ffs have a plan for a safe green space where they can go. If not, you are just rearranging chairs on the Titanic.
The Portland police 2020 annual report says "violent crime drastically increased" (6) but if you turn to the tables listing violent crimes you see that it actually decreased by 4%. Homicides are up, but statement is factually incorrect and misleading.
People For Portland is clearly a mass incarceration PR campaign. If you support them, then you support mass incarceration.
Imagine being so upset about "empty jail beds."
"Record crime"- compared to when?
"Fewer Prosecutions"- than when?
"Empty jail beds"- y que?

In the Portland city council race, the editorial boards of the
@Oregonian
and
@wweek
have chosen to back a candidate who flagrantly broke campaign finance laws over a candidate who is guilty of speaking her mind.
One Portland City Council member created a group to help people living on the streets, while another recently elected council member is ordering the city not to help people on the streets. Voters chose the latter over the former, which is an expression of their values.
Last night
@PCCEPportland
meeting AC Mike Frome said Portland police would not be taking down license plate numbers of people wearing black since that would be against the law. One wonders why the police commissioner encouraged citizens to engage in similarly illegal activity.
@PortlandPolice
Funny, I don't recall ever seeing pictures of the cache of weapons that were NOT seized from rightwing protestors who were staged on the roof of a parking lot with loaded weapons.
The election for City Council seat 3 in Portland is a battle between one Black Lives Matter candidate,
@JoAnnPDX
, and two Blues Lives Matter candidates. Choose thoughtfully.
The "I thought it was a taser" defense is not an argument for more police training. It's an argument for limiting all police interactions with the public.
It's interesting that violent crime rates in Oregon were way higher 1997-2001 than they are today, and yet Oregonians believed things were headed in the right direction. Actual crime rates and whether it is increasing or decreasing bears no relationship to how Oregonians feel.
Next question in the KGW gov debate is about polls and if Oregon is on the right track. Here is the long-term trend of Oregonians who say the state is on the right track.
The PPS proposal to reduce classroom size by just ONE student per class tells you all you need to know about why the Portland teachers' strike will continue through Thanksgiving and perhaps even Festivus, when we can all join for the airing of grievances.
Turns out that two wealthy 30-year-old dudes in a lakefront house in Lake Oswego are at the center of the catalytic convertor thefts in Portland. Maybe we need to send Portland Police to do a "reset" in Lake O.
Missing from call for more police in Portland is any analysis about what police actually do or facts about the relationship between police and crime. Cherry picking crimes that have increased when overall crime has decreased is not good social science.
It’s hard not to see that anger and fear sown by our city and national leaders against anti fascists and houseless people is what helped radicalize the alleged mass shooter in Portland. If Trump is responsible for Jan. 6th, Wheeler bears some responsibility for Feb. 19.
Even the
@Oregonian
thinks
@tedwheeler
ordinance restricting free speech is a bad idea. You know you’re in trouble when the editorial board that supported Knute Buehler thinks you have gone too far to the Right.
What do you call it when a gang demands money from local businesses to provide protection?
In Portland it's called an Enhanced Service District and the gang is the Portland Business Alliance.
It would be nice if the 4 city council members who voted to settle this lawsuit over egregious police brutality actually held the officer accountable instead of just making taxpayers pony up.
Portland Police used force 2378 times according to their soon to be released 2Q use-of-force data, including 1582 uses-- or 66.5%-- uses of chemical agents, impact weapons or "strikes/kicks. Come to
@PCCEPportland
mtg. on Tues. to discuss report.
Christine Drazan and Betsy Johnson both came out against funding abortion services for those from out of state. If you believe in abortion rights for all, you know who not to vote for.
