Very odd article. Would have been helpful to include that Gresham is: - OR's 4th largest city - Shares a boarder with Portland - 38% communities of color - Only 21% of voters are registered Republicans - Clinton won the city by 12-points in 2016

This week is the 18 year anniversary of Portland's 10-year plan to end homelessness. "Moving those chronically homeless into permanent housing where there are support services....will free up service money for everybody who sleeps on streets and in shelters." (1/4)

Updated Portland traffic stop data is out today for Q4 2022. There were 2,588 traffic stops this last quarter, which is about one-fourth of pre-pandemic levels. Of those stopped, 42% were people of color.

In non-election news, the Portland Police released the 2024 Q1 traffic stop report. There were 6,369 traffic stops in Portland last quarter, the most since the pandemic. 41% of those stopped were drivers of color.

The more I think about NYT article today the more disappointing it is. E.g., Gresham could be a great city to highlight in a national paper about how a demographically changing community manages public safety. Gresham has gone from 79% white non-Hispanic in 2000 to 62% now.

Title of the article is a "Chasm Grows Between Portland the the Rest of the State." According to the NYT the "rest of the state" is limited to Gresham--a city that boarders PDX, is racially diverse, Democratic and voted solidly Clinton--and Sandy, the next town over. Good grief

80 years ago today the Willamette University football ( @wubearcats ) team was in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack. Upon returning to Oregon all 28 players joined the armed forces. A nice short history here.

Another finding from the @OPB / @DHMresearch survey is the generational divide in opinions about the protests in Portland. 60% of Portland voters approve of the protests vs 45% in the metro region. Regionally, 62% of voters ages 18-29 approve vs 67% of voters 65+ who disapprove.

Interesting data from UC Berkeley about downtown recoveries. This study examined 62 North American cities using cell phone activity, comparing spring of 2019 to spring of 2022. Portland rated 60th and recovered 41% of activity.

Here are the changes in the total number of registered voters in Oregon counties from the November 2020 election to August 2023. The biggest increases are in Marion (+8,812), Deschutes (+6,637), and Washington (+5,769). Multnomah lost the most (-10,891).

Also says that "Portland and its surrounding area" make up 60% of the states population. No idea where this comes from. Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties are 43% of state's population. Adding Yamhill and Columbia only brings it up to 47%.

Portland City Council incumbents Ted Wheeler and Chloe Eudaly look headed to runoffs after getting less than 50% in the primary. How unusual is that? By my count, there have been 36 incumbents on primary ballots from 1980-2020 and 8 times they have failed to get 50%.

Look at what has happened in Washington County the last two decades. In 2000, Gore edged Bush by 2 points. In 2008, Obama won the county by 22 points. In 2020, Biden is winning by 36 points!

Oregon is dry as we head into spring. 81% is abnormally dry, 44% is in severe drought, and 12% is facing extreme drought. The Klamath Basin is particularly is dry. And, yet, Oregon is in better shape than much of the west.

I'm keeping tabs on daily voter turnout in Oregon. Prior to OR's automatic voter registration, about 72-73% of eligible voters were registered. Now it's about 91%. To year-to-year comparisons, it's necessary to look at the turnout % for both. I'll be updating here. (1/N)

The US Census has new data out today on state-to-state migration in 2022. Here is where former Oregonians moved to and where new Oregonians moved from. Total outflow was 157,729, inflow 128,359, for a loss of -29,370. This does not include international migration.

In another thread, I'm keeping track of daily turnout in Oregon. One notable thing so far is that Dem turnout is a 15.7% vs 14.8% for Rep. Long way to go, but Dem turnout hasn't exceeded Rep in a midterm since at least 1966, which is far back as my records go.

The new @DHMresearch looked at the governor's race with a particular focus on @senbetsyjohnson . In a generic ballot test among just Dem and Rep, the Dem leads by 9 points. When Johnson is added--without any description of her--she is in third at 11%. (1)

Morning Consult has updates to their approval ratings for all 50 governors. TIna Kotek starts her term with the lowest approval rating in the US, at 42% BUT that's somewhat driven by a relatively high percent of don't know responses, as she does not have the highest disapproval.

Via MultCo elections there are an estimated 13,299 ballots returned in the county as of this morning. On the equivalent day in in 2016 (Oct 21) there were 3,232 ballots returned.

In the last 50 years, there have been 10 incumbent Portland city council members who received <50% in the primary. Of these: -4 went on to win in the general -3 lost in the general -2 were eliminated in the primary -And Commissioner Hardesty is on the ballot now

This suggests that Johnson is not disproportionately "taking" voters from Kotek. Drazan has consistently had a 1-3 point lead in polling. If Johnson was "taking" from Kotek, you'd expect Kotek's numbers to rise as Johnson falls.
