Remember when students went on climate strike because they wanted a safe future &ScoMo told them they should be in school?
Well,over 600 schools in NSW are closed today due to catastrophic bushfires made worse by climate change & inaction from Government. What say you now ScoMo?
The lockdown is now just as harsh as last year, but this time there's no JobKeeper, coronavirus supplement or expanded welfare eligibility, ban on evictions, rent relief, or free childcare/absence fee waivers. People need support to stay home, not just punishment.

BREAKING: Labor has just passed laws to jail peaceful logging protesters in Victoria. 😠
The real crime here is the one against democracy, nature and climate.
#SpringSt
North Melbourne public housing now has an on-site vaccine clinic, open 5 days a week, with Pfizer AND AstraZeneca! Any public housing resident 16 years old or over can come down for a free, safe vaccine Mon-Fri 10.30-4pm. Bottom of 159 Melrose St tower.

Today I broke the law.
I joined locals in Wombat state forest, surveying for threatened species.
But this is illegal in Victoria.
Labor’s new laws mean you can be fined up to $21,000 fined or jailed for challenging logging & be charged for simply walking into a logging area
My face reading that NATIVE FOREST LOGGING WILL END in Victoria by Jan next year!
Labor has been dragged kicking and screaming to this decision. THANK YOU to all those who fought for this win. 💚
It’s PASSED!
VicForests has been abolished.
After decades of logging & destruction, driving endangered species to near extinction, it is over.
More to do to protect & restore Victoria’s forests but this is a big day.

The Victorian Parliament has just ruled that MPs are not allowed to wear the keffiyeh in the chamber.
That makes us one of the only parliaments in the world to ban the keffiyeh - on Nakba day, a day that marks the displacement of Palestinian people.

Quietly, at 7pm last night, the Labor Andrews Govt & Liberal Morrison Govt agreed to lock in 10 more years of native forest logging. What’s more, we can’t see any detail until Fed Parliament sits again in AUGUST! After what we lost in the bushfires this is unacceptable
#springst
Very disappointed to see Labor preference the Liberals, right-wing independents & Lib Dems ahead of Greens for City of Melbourne Council elections. We think we should be working together for sustainable progressive outcomes, not helping right-wing candidates get elected
#springst
Very disappointing that Australian Attorneys-General voted today to keep 10, 11, 12 and 13 year olds in prison. There are better alternatives. Victoria should now go it alone and raise the age here in our state to keep kids out of prison.
#springst
Today in Vic Parliament I asked Premier why he won’t advocate publicly to PM for release of the 33 men locked up in Park Hotel, Carlton. He said he wants more compassion but it’s “not a matter for the states”. I think he should use his platform to demand their release.
#springst
Went out to try and find some African gangs tonight as Turnbull says they’re a “real concern” in Melbourne. Couldn’t find any here on Errol St North Melbourne. Thought I heard a few dog whistles though.
#springst
Today I asked Premier Andrews in Question Time why his Labor Government is supporting gas drilling near the 12 Apostles & across Victoria’s land and oceans. He said: they took a pro-gas policy to the last election so they’re doing it. Umm… climate change, anyone??
#springst
Victorians have watched in horror at the atrocities unfolding in Gaza at the hands of the Israeli military.
Yet Labor has signed a secretive MoU with Israeli Ministry of Defence & given $ to Israeli weapons companies.
We’ll be moving in Parli today to make this MoU public.

Today is a historic day. Native forest logging will end in Victoria on 1 Jan 2024.
As a girl who first joined forest protests & blockades in her early 20s, I feel pretty emotional today.
This is why I joined the Greens & why I became an MP. 1/2
The Greens are calling for emergency payments to be made available to casual workers who lose income over the next 5 days of lockdown, similar to the $450 offered to those required to isolate. This lockdown hurts us all, but some more than others.

Petrol prices are skyrocketing. Victorian Labor Government must scrap their electric car tax, to help with cost of living and make it cheaper, easier and greener for people to get around.

According to Haaretz, Israeli forces used an Elbit Systems drone when they killed Zomi Frankcom, three other aid workers and a Palestinian driver this week.
Victorian Labor must finally rip up its contract with Elbit and demand an immediate ceasefire!
#FreePalestine
Last week I called on Premier Jacinta Allan to cut Victoria's ties with Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.
Elbit is a company that advertises “battle-tested” weapons – meaning they’re used to kill Palestinian men, women and children, then sold around the world for profit.
I am livid at hearing this.
It’s hard enough for new mums to participate in society with all the barriers put in front of them - to be humiliated like this, for just trying to enjoy the comedy festival, is awful.
Arj Barker should take a good look at himself & apologise

A breastfeeding mother has been kicked out of a Melbourne comedy show after prolific comedian Arj Barker claimed it was “ruining his train of thought. >
There are NO positive cases currently in North Melbourne or Flemington public housing towers. All 11 cases moved to hotel quarantine & no new ones today. Positive news. Vaccine clinics now open at bottom of towers at both Flem & Nth Melb. ALL residents can get free Pfizer vax.
On the right - Kensington streets, cars, etc: flooded.
On the left - Flemington Racecourse, home to ever-powerful Victorian Racing Club, with its own flood wall (pushed through by Labor Planning Minister against serious qns from community & Council): dry.
Hmm. 🤔
The Greens have just introduced a Bill to abolish laws that lock Victoria into logging native forests until 2030.
It’s time to end taxpayer-subsidised native forest logging & protect our irreplaceable forests.
#SpringSt
#VicForestsFail
Victorian Labor Govt has introduced new laws that mean protesting in logging area lands you 12 months in jail or $21k fine. Just carrying a piece of PVC pipe is extra fine. Extreme, draconian & outrageous, after they changed the law to make illegal logging LEGAL

I’m disappointed in
@abcmelbourne
coverage of this - the headline is simply not true. The Premier will not be given power to declare lockdowns for 3 months. The truth is: 1/2
Today, UN says keeping global warming to less than 1.5 degrees (the ‘safer’ level) is now virtually impossible, & real villains are countries expanding fossil fuels, like Australia. If we needed one more reason to kick out Morrison & put Greens in balance of power, THIS IS IT.
Today I asked Dan Andrews in Parliament: given the huge swing towards pro-climate action candidates at the election - will the Vic Labor Govt reverse their decision to approve gas drilling near the 12 Apostles and 12 other licenses they’ve approved? His answer: no. 😢
#springst
Big news for Victoria today with Dan Andrews resigning.
I haven’t always agreed with his views or his politics - but credit to a Premier who made some bold calls & hard decisions in really tough times.

Today Vic Labor Govt will introduce a Bill to put extra tax on drivers of electric cars. We’re pretty much only place in world that’s doing this. It’s a silly idea & we Greens are working w industry lobbying Labor to dump the tax & introduce incentives for EVs instead
#springst
In big news, horse-drawn carriages will officially be removed from Melbourne's CBD!
Such a win for all those who care about animal welfare.
Congrats to wonderful Greens Councillor
@RohanLeppert
who introduced the motion that led to the state govt making this change! 🐴 💚
So the Victorian Labor Government not only approved a duck killing season this year, but today they INCREASED the bag limit. Shooters used to be able to kill 2 ducks per day per person, now they can kill 5. And they’ve increased the species ppl can kill too. WTAF, Labor.🦆 😢
Sitting in Parliament listening to Labor’s Northcote MP Kat Theophanous sing the praises of gas as a transition fuel, and talk about how gas drilling across Victoria will have no adverse impacts on the environment is just ... 😫😫🥲
We're hearing no new cases in public housing towers (Flemington or North Melbourne) yet today. Can still change, but this is heartening. Many hundreds tested yesterday. Many Tier1 contacts will still need to quarantine for 14 days (including all those with kids at MAC).
#springst
Today Victoria announced we will build a 300MW big battery. This is good news: the Greens have been campaigning for a big battery & we’re so pleased that the Govts has heard our calls. Only thing is: we still use coal for over half our energy in Victoria... /1
Latest update we have on the premmie baby and her mum in public housing. After escalating the case last night we've been assured DHHS (and interpreter) are facilitating breastmilk to be taken from mum to baby & she's having her test fast-tracked so she can be reunited with baby
Over past few weeks my staff & I have been subject to abuse & threats of violence. We’ve had to call security more than a few times. My colleague
@SamanthaRatnam
has had it even worse. The worst part? Some politicians aren’t just refusing to condemn it, they’re inciting it.
The demonstrations on the streets of Melbourne are a terrifying escalation of a fringe group that is growing increasingly detached from reality.
Political protest is healthy. Taking nooses to Parliament, sending used condoms to MPs & making death threats is not.
BREAKING: community pressure wins! After huge pressure, the Victorian Government has rejected a proposal for huge gas import ship in sensitive RAMSAR wetland at Westernport. Massive congrats to locals, Greens & enviro orgs who forced Vic Gov to reject this bad proposal!

Just got off phone w man in NthMelb. They have newborn in special care at RWH. Have had difficulty getting someone to collect breastmilk & unable to visit. His wife just got negative test result &taken to RWH to visit bub. Allowed once a day til lockdown over. He's very relieved!
Liberals pleaded for pairs so that two of their MPs could go home & observe Good Friday. Gov agreed & sent two of their MPs home. At last minute, Libs reappeared to vote down firefighters protection Bill. Says volumes about the values of Libs

A picture paints a thousand words. On on side - Kensington is under water. On the other - the racecourse is protected by a flood wall. As climate change gets worse, communities will suffer while the big end of town seems to always get protected.
We have been alarmed to hear SES taking away individual food donations at Flemington towers: we have escalated to Premier’s office. Have been told this shouldn’t happen and donations will be accepted. We are monitoring situation.
I know we’re all focused on easing restrictions, and thankful for what the Premier announced today and his hard work. But don’t forget his Government today also forcibly disbanded a camp of Djab Wurrung ppl trying to protect sacred country and tore down this tree. For a freeway.
Update: I have been able to *confirm* that the tree in this picture - which is widely referred to as the Djab Wurrung Directions Tree - has been chopped down and removed.
Story and more detail to come.
Thank you to
@janet_rice
@TimRRead

Some good news: I just asked Minister for Health

Labor’s laws to make anti-logging protests illegal will come into effect tomorrow. I'll be joining citizen scientists & activists peacefully walking into the forest to show the Gov't we will not be intimidated by these anti-democratic laws.
Join us here:
There are reports in the Herald Sun today that there’ll be billions spent on social housing in upcoming Victorian Budget. If that happens, it’s a huge win for the Greens & homelessness advocates who have been highlighting Govt inaction on this crisis for a decade /1
#springst
Earlier this year, Vic Labor also changed laws to make illegal logging legal.
It’s clear that this government will stop at nothing to keep logging Victoria’s forests - despite worsening climate & extinction crises.
Today in Vic Parliament we’ll be introducing amendments to ban sale of ‘second-generation’ rat poisons from supermarkets & hardware stores. These poisons are killing native wildlife & pets. There are alternatives. You can’t buy these in Europe, why can we still in Vic?
#springst
The Greens & I are calling for a bonus for Victorian nurses on the COVID frontline in public hospitals.
They’ve been through a lot & we need them now more than ever.
There’s a lot of talk about nurses being heroes but we think they should be rewarded with action.
#SpringSt
Only 2% of Victoria's logged forest ends up being used as timber for things like furniture and floorboards.
The rest is bulldozed and burnt, or turned into disposable products like paper and woodchips.
We need to end native forest logging NOW.
@abcmelbourne
Premier can declare pandemic for 3 months at a time, but then Health Minister sets any restrictions (with CHO) which are reviewed by a panel of health & human rights experts & all health advice will be fully made public.
@abcmelbourne
would be great to accurately reflect this 2/2
🙏🏻 to all the forests activists who have given so much, and inspired me so much, over the last 20 yrs
Our Greens amendments to guard against Labor’s ‘logging by stealth’ didn’t pass but we’ll keep working to ensure our forests are protected for good. 🌳
To be honest, this is a bit of a kick in the guts to everyone who can’t see their family, can’t go to funerals, can’t have visitors by their hospital beds. We have always supported the Andrews Government’s health-first response to the crisis but this is a really poor decision
#BREAKING
: The state government has announced that up to 500 owners and connections will be able to attend this weekend’s Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. In total, up to 1000 people can be on course at once.
Right now electric vehicle uptake is lower in Australia than just about anywhere. Yet Labor in Victoria has just announced a tax on EVs. When the UK is banning fossil fuel cars, why is Victoria going in the opposite direction? …

BREAKING: NSW to ban offshore drilling for coal, oil & gas. 🐋
This makes Vic Labor's push for more offshore drilling even more embarrassing.
Greens will introduce a Bill to the Vic Parliament in coming weeks to ban offshore oil & gas drilling to protect our oceans & climate.
BREAKING: Labor & the Liberals have just committed $32m to ANOTHER new gas project - this time off Victoria's east coast.
We need more Greens in Parliament to stop Labor & the Libs teaming up to fund new fossil fuel projects.
Vote climate. Vote Greens.
#springst
Time to change our voting system to proportional representation, like they have in NZ. It’s led to stable Government with a PM who actually seems to listen to the people and collaborate across different parties, and the Greens doing a great job in Ministries.

Imagine if every day at your workplace began with reciting the Lords Prayer.
Unless you work in a church, it's a little unusual.
Today I've called for Victorian Parliament to stop opening each sitting day with the Lords prayer.

This article is spot on!
Other countries celebrate and support babies and their parents in public spaces. It’s time Australia did the same.
If Arj Barker couldn’t handle a heckle from a baby, maybe he just needs to get better at his job?
With my Greens MP colleagues risking arrest today in the forest, in defiance of ridiculous new laws that make it illegal to protest against logging in Victoria

Can’t concentrate today. Feeling so enraged about how many women still aren’t believed, how on EARTH the PM isn’t announcing an investigation/inquiry and standing down the alleged rapist, & how damn exhausting it is living in a culture where women are still treated this way GARHH
Vic Labor desperately trying to figure out how to get their electric car tax through Parliament, where it doesn’t yet have support of enough MPs (or community). So they’re now offering subsidies, but pretty paltry & in our view not enough to justify supporting the EV tax 1/2
After much pressure from Greens, other crossbenchers & community groups, Vic Labor Govt has backed down on Bill to give police, PSOs &security guards powers to preemptively detain ppl without charge or appeal. Good outcome. Bill was terrible, glad we’ve helped change it

Labor Health Minister Martin Foley today speaking in Question Time about the Greens and our approach to the pandemic: “they should be commended for putting the health of Victorians above petty politics”

This decision is in spite of more than 11K people signing the open letter to stop this. 😠
It’s a hugely disappointing outcome but this isn’t over.
The Greens will never stop fighting to stop new fossil fuel projects & protect our land & oceans from dangerous gas drilling.
A note to men who don’t get it: when a baby’s breastfeeding you literally have to be attached to them most of time & cant be separated for more than an hour or so
So if you don’t allow bf babies in public places, you’re actually saying women/mums aren’t allowed in those places
Liberal MP Bev McArthur is saying 'Brumby Lives Matter' in response to removal of invasive species in national parks. What an inappropriate, insensitive &outrageous appropriation of Black Lives Matter movement. Oppn Leader

Disappointing to hear Premier

say he will not support a climate emergency, and in fact “does not think it advisable to support Greens motions”. What a shame. We think Victorians actually want us to work together to deal with climate change.

We’re heading into a state election where it’s possible Greens could hold balance of power. In that scenario, the Greens have announced we would seek to work with Labor to form stable, progressive government & today we announce our priorities if the Greens & Labor share power 1/2
Over the last few months the Greens have negotiated with the Victorian Govt to create new laws to replace the blunt instrument ‘state of emergency’ for pandemics (which really wasn’t fit for purpose). Tomorrow they’ll be introduced, so here’s what they contain: (a🧵) /1
Ending native forest logging now - rather than in 10 years - in Victoria would save taxpayers $191m! Cmon
@DanielAndrewsMP
- let’s do this. Let’s put the money into regional economy recovery, lord knows they need it post-fires and post-COVID.
#springst
@TkbWarrior
I totally disagree.
As a mum who has bf three babies (including in Parliament, the cinema, etc) I don’t believe I should have had to sit at home and not participate in society at all for the 4+ years I breastfed.
Women have a right to participate in society while breastfeeding
Let’s remember: blaming public housing residents for lockdown is not kind nor useful. Residents living in overcrowded,poor conditions, impossible to socially distance. It’s not new but COVID lays it bare. We need more&better public housing. Shouldn’t take pandemic to tell us that
So proud and emotional watching this powerful Gunnai-Gunditjmara woman
