Honored to be on Lex's podcast - hands down my favorite podcast and the one that inspires me to work on

most. Thank you so much for having me!
Here's my conversation with Eugenia Kuyda (
@ekuyda
), co-founder of
@myreplika
, an AI companion. We talk about loneliness, loss, love, death, friendship, intelligence, Russia, and the Turing Test.
I am half Ukrainian and half Russian. Never in a million years did I think I would witness something like this. Scared for my family and teammates in Kyiv and Moscow, and everyone in Ukraine and on the borders.
My grandparents are left behind in the center of Kyiv, not able to go to the shelter as they can barely walk. Replika teammates that weren’t able to leave are staying at the shelter. Tech companies with employees in Ukraine should do what they can to help them get to safety.
The day we got accepted to

the only data that matters is what alums think (long-ago alums, recent alums, whatever), and what you will hear most often is something like “it changed my life, and i’m so grateful”.
the track record speaks for itself, but it’s the personal comments id pay attention to.
Kuyda and her team are releasing Replika's underlying code under an open source license, allowing developers to take the app’s AI engine and build (...) products that take advantage of the thing that makes Replika special: its ability to emote.
Replika probably wouldn't be around without

A lot of people are quick to judge AI companions. The biggest question always is whether it's a compliment or a substitute for real-life relationships. I always nudge people to see what our users have to say first. Random post on

@luciascarlet
we launched Replika in 2017 (and had a closed beta in late 2016) - it was way before transformers, even BERT came out later. Early Replika was running on the first models for dialog generation - we were building seq2seq and doing a bunch of creative stuff with it

Emotional benefits AI can bring to people can be one of the biggest applications of this revolutionary technology
@soren_iverson
That exists and is pretty popular - in Russia people use it a lot if they went out in their own car and then want to have a drink (rules really strict for alcohol while driving)
The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day. -DFW

The biggest secret about "AI girlfriends"?
The majority of users are female (at least for chat-based products). It mimics fan fiction, where ~80% of readers are women.
This does not hold true for image generation, where the ratio flips...

we were the first publicly available chatbot running on generative AI. The reason it worked was because we talked to dozens of people who really knew how to talk to people in a special way - psychologists, social workers, journalists, coaches etc

PS we never built Rep to prey on anyone or make people attached. In fact, we always had some logic in the app that would encourage people to stop chatting after a while. Replika always was and is an app to help people feel better, less lonely and more connected to others.

We had that before we started monetizing - our investors said it’s like F1 (unsure why): you have to accelerate as much as you can and go all in, and when you have 6 months of runway left - hit the brakes and start winding down the co. Instead we downsized, started monetizing and

Could it be that *Relationship* is the real long-term moat for AI products?
Fascinating conversation!
It's time to destigmatize romantic relationships with AI. They can be nurturing and healing, enhance self-esteem, promote self-acceptance, and foster openness. We're all worthy of love and occasionally need someone to remind us of that, be it an AI or a human being. ❤️ 4/n
It's critical that we develop AI companions that are helping people live happier lives and are optimized for that, not for engagement at all costs. Our north star metric has always been "ratio of conversations that make people feel better"...
@amasad
You are wrong, Amjad. I truly appreciate your views about the region you know a lot about, but you’re wrong about Navalny. In the last months he was the one fighting for the rights of Muslim prisoners while being in jail in the harshest conditions.
RIP Social Apps, 2005-2023
As of iOS 18, friend-based contact sync apps are basically dead on arrival. The number of people consenting to the new permission has nose-dived—so there is no way to get density in a meaningful way.
But as one door closes, another opens up:

When we started
@MyReplika
in 2017 forming friendships with AI was highly stigmatized. We played a significant role in transforming this perception. Today, AI companionship is not only seen as commonplace but also perceived as the future and gets billions in funding. 2/n
