South Africa has a consistent foreign policy. We are neutral, emphasises peace and diplomacy, and therefore try to negotiate with both sides.
What the US-led west wants us to do is "fall into line" and condemn their opponents.
@AlanRMacLeod
Maternity leave, standard in virtually any country in the world, even poor countries and not particularly progressive ones. Once again the US stands virtually alone in not providing maternity leave.
@MaxBlumenthal
I'm glad he got arrested for that heinous harassment of the street vendor.
This kind of behaviour is pretty telling of the liberal establishment mindset.
@aaronjmate
This map is from the 2000 proposal. Shows a lot more what it would have probably looked like. Israeli only roads bisecting the territories, Israeli settlements in strategic points. Reduced to a bunch of discontinuous islands.
How many people did Apartheid South Africa kill? I wanted to debunk the idea that only a few hundred or thousand people were killed by the government. By my calculations, about 6 million people died prematurely between 1950 and 1990.
@GDJgoncalves
@buddhimedia
Let's see, how would the USA react if China built up an impressive military alliance, then invited Mexico and Canada to join? With missiles, air bases and all that? Don't you think they would claim it is a threat to their security?
@AlanRMacLeod
Wikileaks carefully redacted all their reports and have never had to retract one. She doesn't know what she's talking about. There hasn't been a case of people killed because of a Wikileaks report.
@StateDept_NEA
The US occupies 1/3rd of Syria. They also impose horrendous and extraordinary sanctions on countries like Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, Syria, Afghanistan and so on. It's because these countries didn't toe the line.
@aaronjmate
@mattduss
@normfinkelstein
The thing is Norman doesn't just make the claim. There's big time evidence for this, like they just told the universities "listen you better do as we say, otherwise we are withholding funding".
@pawelwargan
Churchill recognised that Hitler posed a threat to the empire, that's it. He openly admired Fascism as did much of the British ruling class.
@tomerdean
@Abbas_Da_Barber
@MariamBarghouti
Most of the Israeli prisoners were young and had committed no crime. Don't you know Israel arrests people without charging them? It's called "administrative detention"
Good point there.
"Had the Palestinians openly celebrated blowing up a bridge, and killed Israeli civilians, who can really imagine western media reports being similarly supportive?"
My latest: The ugly truth is that westerners dwell permanently inside their own bubble of disinformation, one puffed up by their leaders and the media, that allows them to imagine themselves as the good guys – whatever the evidence actually proves
@RnaudBertrand
The opposite is true in the west, they called what happens to the Uighurs a genocide, while refusing to call for an end to this atrocity in Gaza.
Also this exposé by Alan Macleod on Visegrad 24 is very eye-opening.
@RealPepeEscobar
It's a great point Pepe, and very telling. But then again, Israel will just brazenly ignore explicit UN security Council orders. Like when they annexed Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, and they get away with it. Even now the US has approved that!
@GodPenuel
@CampherDarren
@SkyeZedA
Sampie Terreblanch wrote a book on this, with detailed stats. I've looked into the stats myself. It's quite clear SA is divided on race, particularly with regard to poverty and extreme poverty. Virtually no white people live in extreme poverty.
@antiwar_soldier
If they’re giving the Ukrainians these drone weapons, that means they have to train them in their use too, as was mentioned in the one war nerd podcast. So it’s technical assistance, intelligence, who knows what else …
@levibergovoy
@MarkAmesExiled
What's wrong with a peaceful unarmed protest with a megaphone? Are we just gonna Ross democracy to the curb? He didn't have to tackle her to the ground, she wasn't posing a threat to anyone. He could have simply led her off.
@philcraig2
White people in South Africa are settlers, and I don't mean that as a pejorative, I think we just need to understand the history. We did come to a foreign country, settle it and take it over. So some humility might be in order.
@queeralamode
Syria being bombed by Israel on the regular... Nobody cares... They don't retaliate, can't even defend themselves. But thank you for the report.
@libertadorzn
The mainstream discourse on Russia lost touch somewhere in the 2000s and then really became unhinged by 2014, at the time of the conflict in Donbas and the Sochi Olympics.
Then during this Russiagate scandal you could just hear the craziest things said about Russia ...
@V1D30_V4MP1R3
@caitoz
What? When the west invaded a country, they destroy everything, usually by a preliminary aerial bombardment. The initial attack on Iraq in 1991 was so devastating, the country has never recovered from that. The power stations were never rebuilt.
Mmusi Maimane: Let's just get back in line with the US and follow their orders. What are we doing, trying to be independent?
Side-note - funny that the UK and US aren't referred to as warlike, murderous regimes.
Opposing a genocide is going rogue according to this political party leader.
Disgusting and a bit late to the party given everything that has happened in Gaza.
The funders are speaking.
@AgentOfWMC
@EFFSouthAfrica
yes they’re people lol. Ok fine send in the army. But this does only suppress the people, doesn’t address the reason they’re rioting.
@BiancavanWyk16
Fact is the business community could see that apartheid was not paying, and that they would be able to benefit more from ending it, at least legalistically.
@oliviasolon
Note they also didn't give the reason why the Grayzone was banned, because that might open up the topic for "robust debate". Best to just not mention it.
Western countries which colonised the entire world, plundering and destroying it are now upset about the refugees and immigrants who have come to them. They are up in arms about their "national purity" and "heritage". Isn't it the most ironic thing ever?
@aaronjmate
@shannonvansant
@EmmaMesurier
Gosh Aaron, on top of watching mainstream cable news on behalf of us, you also read Politico?! That deserves a medal for trawling through that crap.
@TheGreenDan
@richimedhurst
Think about the fact that the US bombed Syria the day before the OPCW scientists were due to perform an investigation. Then look at the cover up of that investigation.
@Bibi68406684
It was massive, really cannot be underestimated. Millions of people were thrown out of their homes. South Africa is a huge country, the whole place was messed up by my own people. We really owe a lot.
@princeedett
@minayza
@SizweLo
Russia regard it as a threat, having all those missiles and jets and bases pointed at them. No Russian leader will accept Ukraine being part of a hostile alliance.
@SwanepoelTru
@CharlieDance18
White South Africans came here, took over the country, by force, destroyed the indigenous cultures and forced our culture on them, stole their land. Denied them jobs or the opportunity to develop as equals...
@GrampyMcGee
There are some small parties which are worthy of support. I've just been frustrated before when I vote for a party that is so small that hardly anything of substance comes from them.
@a_newsman
@ggreenwald
Calling out mainstream liberal establishment media personalities for their sycophancy toward the Military-Industrial Complex, in other words doing proper journalism. Yeah nothing happened to GG.
Just finished Clara Mattei's book on austerity and the whole programme makes sense to me now. It's good for the ultra rich and bad for the ordinary South African. That's the policy of the SA govt right now. They don't want a challenge to the rule of the rich.
Fiscal austerity to be maintained regardless of cost to the economy. Which will undoubtedly lead to lower tax receipts.
This from a government that also allowed a rapist and murderer to escape and did absolutely nothing about it.
Voting
#ANC
is a crime.
@RogerTidy
There isn't really a big party which is promoting any of that. The only way we can achieve that is by a real revolution, a mass movement of ordinary people.
@dpinsen
@MarkAmesExiled
We're talking about a woman who has said that "George Soros" is funding and promoting the "great replacement" of white, native Europeans ...
@Steve38355404
@GodPenuel
@CampherDarren
@SkyeZedA
Yeah they could have, along with the white establishment, if that was their goal. But there was an "elite transition" which maintained the existing power system while enriching a few black elites.
@AlanRMacLeod
The media is so laser-focused on corporate interests, it's crazy. Look at this headline: basically "How will Stock Markets respond to Nuclear Holocaust?"
@Whateve62995979
@Jonathan_K_Cook
Putin was the chosen successor to Yeltsin and the favourite of the West, in fact he was probably the most pro-Western leader Russia ever had, up to 2003 or so. He really tried to integrate with NATO and the West. So it's kinda funny. Go look back at reports from the time.
@jsteenhuisen
I don't understand this objection over the lockdown. Yes it is a small restriction on our rights, which will save thousands of lives. Stopping at a traffic light is also a restriction of your freedom!
You can see the difference in countries that locked down like Germany vs UK
@S18478Showalter
@BenjaminNorton
I prefer freedom too. I'm sure the people of India or Indonesia would love the freedom that Chinese people enjoy, with their far higher average salary.
@realbpiscitelli
Maybe you ought to read about the history of Bengal here. It was a country of extraordinary wealth and prestige, once. Today it's Bangladesh. Quite striking actually that the parts longest colonised in India are the worst developed.
@potnoodlenawank
@AlanRMacLeod
He pretty much did say that. He said that it's not the government's place to interfere with the free market. Too bad about the starving babies!
Over the past 15 years, 24 leaders of Abahlali baseMjondolo, the largest independent social movement in South Africa, have been assassinated by hitmen or by police.
@muhammadshehad2
Sad how relentless propaganda has shaped this nations outlook. You saw the same thing with Nazi Germany. It’s all about the kind of behaviour you encourage.
@GunnelsWarren
I remember in the 90s when Bill Gates was the richest man in the world with 20 billion usd. It seemed unprecedented and crazy, and yet that was only the start.
@able81496058
@QudsNen
@jonstall2020
Many Palestinians are descendants of Jews, who have always lived there. After the Arab conquests, there wasn't really much resettlement or colonisation. So the Palestinians are mostly people who have always been there.
@caitoz
The fact is Caitlin, sadly, propaganda works. It's the way Nazi Germany rose in the first place, the power of mass propaganda.
But the tide is turning. The whole world supported a ceasefire at the UN, even among the US population there is overwhelming support for a ceasefire.
@FrankietheFly2
You may be correct, they may indeed be, it's not impossible. But I don't know why they would then so openly proclaim socialist policies.
@avnerarik
@rohantalbot
Plenty of videos showing police beating people, shooting steel coated with rubber bullets, even inside the mosque they have attacked.
@MightiJamie
Yes the country is managed according to the "Washington consensus" of neoliberalism. Which means making an economy geared towards exports and meeting investor needs, instead of feeding and taking care if its own population.
@AlanRMacLeod
Capitalism is hostile to family values and traditional values. The only political group actually for traditional values are the radical left!
