In college Alistair Begg encouraged a group of us to finish our homework on Saturday so we could rest on Sunday. I raised questions about sabbatarianism, etc. & in his Scottish brogue he said, "Brother, if Moses & Chick-fil-A need a day off, so do you." That settled it for me.

RC Sproul was arguably the most effective communicator of the last century. I’ve always been struck by the question he’d ask his wife, Vesta, after each lecture or sermon. Instead of wondering, “how did I do?” he’d ask, “was I kind?”

When the history of the American megachurch is written, I think we’ll see that the movement’s real effect wasn’t to draw in unchurched skeptics, it was to keep in bored believers. It was never really “seeker sensitive” so much as it was “wanderer sensitive.”

Youth pastor sermons be like, the word “chair” here comes from the Greek word X, literally meaning an object upon which one sits. In the ancient near east, it was custom to sit when you were tired of standing but not ready to lay down. So, what are the chairs in your life?

RC Sproul would put his cigarette out on the church stoop & ask to borrow a bible to preach from. When he preached at my wife's church when she was 6, he saw her staring at him & took a cup & filled it with equal parts sugar, milk, & coffee & gave it to her. What a legend.

Evangelicalism thrives as a renewal movement within particular traditions—Baptist, Presbyterian, Anglican, etc.—but absolutely flounders when it becomes unmoored. Evangelicalism is like salt: great when complementing a main dish, but toxic when a dish unto itself.
