I think it’s important to speak-out against the phrase “during covid/the pandemic”. Although often inadvertent, it overtly dismisses the ongoing reality of those who already have chronic conditions/cannot safely access much of the social world. During covid = now.

At a bus stop this morning, I watched a parent ask their 6 yr old if they want to wear a mask on the bus & at school. The child said no. That was that. 6 year olds should not be doing their own risk assessments. Ford & Moore have failed kids beyond measure.

Ontario is reporting a partial Sun. count of 3,595 COVID hospitalizations, w. 579 in ICU & 34 vented — all up >40% v. last week. Deaths/day (40) keep spiking. Outbreaks in seniors' homes, hospitals and shelters etc. are well > previous highs and growing. Testing %+ is down.

Aug 20, 2020 Middlesex-London had 0 new cases; yesterday = 38. All reputable sources indicate modelling for this fall is grim. We need to reduce community spread to *protect unvaxxed kids*. Please pivot expected drivers, like post-secondary courses, online.

@CanCovSoc The testing sites will be drastically reduced. Regional variation in Ontario is substantive, and without access to objective, local data, “assessing one’s own risk” to determine suitable levels of mitigation will be impossible.

By contrast, @OntUniv exemption means hundreds (400+) uni students will be sitting shoulder-to-shoulder for hours at a time in a room at max capacity. I’m afraid for instructors, TAs, the students, campus staff, & city residents including unvaxxed children.

My big class is a distance ed course so I can teach online. B/c even w vaccinations, teaching Health Promotion to 435 ugrads in-person, during a pandemic, w unclear ventilation & mask quality rules would be void of integrity. It’s time to pivot to online.

I want students to have a full social uni experience, but the gamble of doing so is expected to be borne largely by unvaxxed children in region. That price is too high. I really want the modelling to be wrong, but so far it hasn’t been. Pls pivot what can be online, online.
