One of the most painful experiences was to see your “mentors” become “tormentors”, with folks being threatened by the progress of the younger ones. This in my mind, is one of the reasons why we are not experiencing the progress we deserve.

12-year-old boy who underwent pioneering surgery while he was still in the womb has been reunited with the surgeon who gave him a chance of life.

@DrBarnabasAlay
for arranging the reunion. Prof was in Kigali to influence a new generation of surgeons in East Africa. We as a nation 🇳🇬 need to recognize burnt out ashes and reignite dying embers of leadership. This will serve as a beacon of hope to the next generation.

So I took up the challenge,developed myself, got scholarships and fellowships,got world class training &certifications(FRCS,FACS, FEBS etc),published research (ave of 1/month for past 4yrs) and got academic promotion in a setting that was interested in me…5/5

But a prophet is not without honor except in his own country. I was so keen on being involved in academics and teaching that I was ready to do it for free. I have took a significant pay cut in an institution so as to have the opportunity to lecture in Surgery….2/5

I am sorry, I have made this post so long. I initially didn’t want to respond. Always preferred not being in spotlight. Just wanted to do “my thing” and make sure everyone is happy. I have not mentioned names or institutions. Don’t aim to offend anyone.

At a time, after lobbying and begging, all I was (grudgingly) offered was to teach pharmacology as an associate (part-time) lecturer. But I did it with all my heart and was zealous about it. Ironic to have a surgeon teach pharmacology. Can only happen in Naija…3/5

I remember being told by a senior professor in a university that my academic services were not needed as they had 7 other General Surgeons, and as the youngest, I didn’t have anything to offer. Took it as a challenge to improve myself. Adversity->Tenacity->capacity…4/5

@DrETPeters
Lots of lessons learnt from this experience.I knew I had a global platform to express myself. Applied for jobs in the UK &got multiple offers. Ironic that while I was begging in Naija,the prospective UK employers were wooing me. Got invited to visit them so as to make up my mind.

But we as a people have to rise above sentiments and be pragmatic in our dealings. I do hope that we continue to inspire one another and maybe (hopefully maybe), we will get to our El dorado and change the current narrative. Peace out✌️
