When ever Jay Z does a show or freestyle the world is suddenly amazed at his level of skill.
That was THE standard. And still should be.
People have excepted all these lame rappers SO much that they ve forgotten what an actual dope MC sounds like.
After my gig Uber weโre charging ยฃ90 for my cab home so jumped on the night tube. The night tube is a whole other world. Saw 2 fights, people blazing on the tube and one guy proudly announced that he shat himself. Good ol London ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Can we all stop worshipping Rishi Sunak. Just remember when this country needed money for the NHS, Schools, Grenfell, Windrush, etc we were told there was no magic money ๐ด ๐ณ
This is the UK rap scene I grew up on.
Some โJournalistsโ will say it was full of back packers. ๐คญ๐ค I donโt see no back packers in here. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Dingwalls - Camden. Photo from Normski.
Itโs mad how
@HighFocusUK
outsell most Grime artists yet gets ZERO plays on the BBC Radio 1 and 1xtra??? ๐ค๐ค Itโs like if you donโt Spit about โRoadโ or you do Grime you ainโt getting a look in mate. Music is music.
50 years of Hip Hop.
London has had a Hip Hop scene for at least 42 of those years. Why arenโt we talking about the MCs/DJโs/Groups that paved the way for now? Newtrament, DJ Fingers, Pogo, Swift, Demon Boyz, Hijack, She Rockers, Overlord X, Derek B, Hardnoise.. the list goes on.
Happy to say my Best Of A Tribe Called Quest mix is complete. ๐ Nearly 2 hours long. The cover is super dope too. Gonna drop it by the end of the week.
Your talking about mixtapes and UK rap foundations???? You do realise there was a scene pre 2006. ๐ซ๐ซ๐ซ Someone educate this guy please ๐๐๐๐๐ These Complex โJournalistsโ out here re writing history.
Hardcore Hip Hop fans in a club is a bad look. Club is packed. Loads of girls dancing. Some long haired dude pushes to the DJ boothโฆ shouts in my ear โMFโ I was like what????
He said, play some MF Doom or Madlib. ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ ๐ฌ๐ฅ
I asked if he was serious. He said yes.
This time 10 years ago I was performing with Dizzee on the Pyramid stage just before the headliner (Artic Monkeys)
Itโs a crazy feeling being on that stage feeling the energy of so many people. Love
@glastonbury
but they definitely need more Hip Hop down there ๐
Tonight Iโm playing at the o2 with Dizzee. ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป
20 years ago literally round the corner from the o2 kids were spitting grime in youth clubs, and now they ve taken it to the o2!!!!!!! ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Tonight HISTORY will be made. ๐๐
2 things I learnt from listening to the KRS album.
1 - He's still got it. His voice still sounds the same, and he's still dope which is so good to hear.
2 - The beats are horrendous. No disrespect to whoever produced these, but they are terrible.
Shook ones was released 25 years ago today ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป one of the greatest gully Hip Hop records ever made. Just noticed I had this on my mixtape in Oct 94, 4 months before it dropped ๐ Big up Mark B (RIP) who hit me off with the promo
Why is it always Hip Hop fans with these mad takes?? Seriously??
When was the last time you heard Rock fans saying Jimi Hendrix was just a old head?๐คฃ or Stevie Wonder isnโt relevant anymore as he hasnโt had a record in the top 20 for over 25 years. ๐ฉ
Tribe are probably my favourite Hip Hop group ever.
Ive just started making this "Best Of Tribe Called Quest" mix. Which is pretty impossible tas hey ve made so many good songs. What Tribe tunes u wanna hear?
So Iโm listening to the stems of โVideo Killed The Radio Starโ Theres a unreleased โrapโ from Hans Zimmer & Trevor Horn. The original was recorded in 79, so why is he rapping about Mr T, when A-Team didnโt start till 83?
Anyone know the story behind this??
I miss that feeling of waking up in a hotel in some random city in Europe on a Sunday morning. 4 hours sleep.Knowing you smashed the club the night before. Fat pile of cash in a brown envelope. Deposit is in the bank. AND the promoter is late 2 pick u up to drop u at the airport.
The Roots are one of my favourite groups. Itโs crazy to think they used to live in london, were signed to Giles Petersonโs label and had a residency at WKDโs in Camden (which held about 100 people) People were not ready for their greatness at the time.
Now that was a SICK. ๐
Little illegal street party on a Thursday night. Police came just as we finished ๐ ๐ฎโโ๏ธ
Big up YOYOLONDON for having me down and for RASKIT Killing it as always!!!๐งจ
Gonna digitalise some of the cassettes that Iโve had sitting in storage and will upload them. Iโve got Zulu Beats , Westwood on LWR-Capital, Red Alert Kiss Fm (84-94) Flex, All the Marley Marl -Westwood rap exchange, The Hop live tapes etc Let me know what you d like 2 hear.
I see a few DJs moaning about Snoop taking down some of the Deathrow catalogue from Spotify etc. Youโre a Hip Hop DJ and didnโt at least BUY the Vinyl, CD or MP3โs??? ๐ซ
The record label name has been sorted. Thanks for all your suggestion.
You can see what the name of the label is on our first release of vinyl.
Test pressings back in 8
Weeks!
Exciting times.
The 1st release is 3 track EP
Featuring 3 of the sickest MCs right now in the UK ๐ฅ
Iโve spent the last 5 years writing a book about my experiences in the UK music industry since 1993. Will be finished by summer time. Some Names have had to be changed to protect the guilty. ๐คฃ
On this day in 91 this dropped.
You canโt talk about classic Hip Hop albums without talking about this. ๐๐ป
@PLargePro
upping the production levels and killing it on the mic, and introducing us to Nas & Akinyele. Timeless.
In tears right now. RIP PHIL ASHER.
We were talking about Gil Scott Heron records just the other day. He was an amazing human being as well as a legendary producer, DJ and father. Love to his family. RIP
My brand new record label.
MARKER-RECORDS. ๐๐
1ST single produced by myself feat the don
@mrfliptrix
dropping June 2nd.๐ฅ
Limited Vinyl and Cassettes.
Once they are gone there will be no repressโs so cop em once the pre order is up.
Full EP lineup to be announced soon.๐
There was no Hip Hop scene whatsoever in London before the year 2000/2001. If you read anything on the so called History of the scene in London thatโs what they re trying to make out.
My next book will be โThe Forgotten Bastard Years of UK Rap 1982 - 1999
Black people protesting = Thugs, Rioters
White football hooligans giving nazis salutes whilst singing โGod Save The Queenโ battering the police = โCounter Protestersโ
This wording is how you keep racism going and slyly brainwash the country.
RIP to Mister Cee. I djed with him at Jazz Cafe at Lyrical Lounge. I remember him playing Full Clip for the first time off Dubplate, and everyone lost there mind.
I love doing all vinyl mixes. U know why?
Because they re hard to do๐ esp if your mixing & cutting up breaks & Hip Hop. Weโve been spoilt with the luxury of CDJS & serato over the years. I forgot how much of a steady hand u need if u dont want that record to skip!
We were taking about the greatness of Mantronix the other day.
โCold Gettin Dumbโin my eyes is one of the greatest/ Game changer Hip Hop beats of the 80โs!!!
We never witnessed arrangement like that, or bass ๐ ๐๐๐
Even the mix down is 10/10.
Still play it out today ๐
Itโs funny, when I was working in record shops in the 90โs in London the only 2pac record that people would buy was โ I get aroundโ and then California Love just before he died. People didnโt really rate him, he would get almost zero radio play, zero club play.
For those who know, the guy on the cover of โSafety Firstโ is the legendary actor Chris Ellison who played inspector Burnside on The Bill.
Turns out his son is a big Hip Hop head and heโs shown his dad, who loves it!!!
Big up Chris Ellison!
Amp Fiddler RIP.
I spent 2 weeks touring Australia & NZ with him and he was such a cool guy with a big heart. Iโd sit beside him at breakfast and heโd tell me crazy Dilla stories and everything about Detroit.
Such sad news. ๐
Love to his family. RIP.
Digital Underground had that funk at a time when everything was Hardcore in Hip Hop and the vibes they bought were next level.7 min long records, concept album about a drug that didnโt exist, multiple personalities, live instruments with samples, and DU introduced us to 2Pac. RIP
No shout outs to the Hip Hop Djs in there early 20โs who donโt practise, can barely do a 2 bar mix, donโt know or care about the history of there genre and spend all there time on social media uploading selfies. Unfortunately in todayโs society these are the people who will win
Iโve been going thru all my Gang Starr files for this mix. I found the session from 2004 when Guru last up on my show. Itโs quite emotional listening to all the off air banter. ๐ข Guru RIP.
Im just listening to the original stems of RUN DMCS Runs House. Thereโs 48 tracks. I ve just noticed theres 2 vocal tracks that have completely different lyrics. Does anyone else know or heard this before, I never new this existed ๐คฏ
50 years of Hip Hop and Iโm not seeing any conversations about Producers. Why arenโt we talking about the greats?
Larry Smith, Marley Marl, Mantronix, Paul Cee, Herbie Luv Bug, Premo, Pete Rock, etc? ๐ค
Iโd say 95% of people who work in the UK music industry re labels donโt even like music let alone have a clue about talent ๐
I remember being in Sony and having to tell a certain label person who was on their roster as they didnโt even know ๐This is a business. Nothing more
Jamal always wanted to include Everyone. I remember him belling me asking me if I could help him with a list of all the classic old skool UK artists, as he wanted to film them. And he did.
He was always thinking about pushing the scene.
Dear Reissue Gods,
Sure, itโs nice to occasionally get some coloured vinyl but it doesnโt sound very good. ๐Can we just keep it with the original black vinyl which is perfect. Pretty please. If I see another red and pink reissue vinyl ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐ญ
The reason I wanna do a podcast is because there are so many terrible podcasts out there letโs be honest. People interviewing artists they have zero knowledge of etc. All a bit lame really. Might have to change that.
When Iโd go to labels in NYC everyone from the girl at reception to the A&Rs, to the dude in the post room would be passionate about the music the label were putting out.
In the UK you have Tarquin.Tarquin is 23.Just moved to london from Oxfordshire n got the job from his mate.
So gutted about Doom. From when we first heard him with 3RD Bass, to KMD then Doom he always came with that dope ๐ฅ๐ฅ never wack shit. The $1 break flipper like no other. RIP
In 1987 itโs safe to say that Eric B & Rakim were bigger in the UK then in the states. We always showed the God mad love. Him cancelling a tour for the 3RD TIME, is a master class on how to destroy a once loyal fanbase. Dude canโt come over here again after this. Sad to see.
Looking forward to watching the Alkaholiks on Drinks Champs. Easy to forget how much they were killing it from 93 onwards. Everyone in the crew had dope voices, and the production was ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ Likwit, Only When Iโm Drunk, Mary Jane, Daaamn, Make Room, The Next level. 2 many hits!
