Data is not an inert natural resource, like oil, nor is it a commodity to be individually owned, like property. 'Data' is 1) actively produced by people, who rarely benefit from it, and 2) fundamentally collective, and should be stewarded as such.

I don't have anything brilliant to say about what's happening. I've taught students in Gaza for years. It is unutterably horrifying to see them - at the ages of 13, 14, 15 - preparing for deaths they’ve been assigned by powers they have no way to affect. I feel broken.

Tech discourse has somehow removed the 'democracy' from 'democratization'. The former is fundamentally about power - in a sleight of hand, the latter has been watered down to individual market access. This is a problem - but it's not unsolvable (yet).

Everything from dynamic public goods funding to transformative AI governance to pandemic prevention to industrial policy for climate change could benefit from massively ramped-up collective intelligence and collective governance capacity. 7/

Great piece by Ted Chiang. Intelligence is not an individual problem-solving and decision-making capacity, but rather an emergent (and collective!) property of many interacting individuals and systems.

The crypto ecosystem has a choice: the path of regeneration, or the path of extraction. In this piece, @Steven_McKie and I make the case for the former, as a matter both of principle and of practice.

Of course, getting there won’t be easy—changing power structures never is. Incentive-alignment work, political shifts, base-building, and public advocacy are essential. These are political-economic questions, and must be treated as such. 8/

our @deepmind paper is out in PNAS! we use john rawls' veil of ignorance as a method of choosing principles to align AI 👰‍♀️🤖 participants behind the veil are more likely to choose principles that prioritize the worst off, driven by fairness concerns

But we have so much to build from: data coalitions, PETs, AI-augmentated deliberation platforms, forecasting + prediction markets, quadratic voting, DAOs, retroactive funding, E2C and tools for shared ownership, liquid democracy, collective financing vehicles. 9/

We all have a stake in the future of surveillance, AI, crypto, space travel, biotech, etc. We’re all going to be affected by the outcomes, by the risks we choose to take and the opportunities we decide are worth the tradeoffs. These are fundamentally collective questions. 5/
