#potato harvest ‘19 is getting more & more challenging. Excess rain for the last 3 weeks. Crops were ready to harvest; quality decreasing while they are left in the ground (pests & diseases). Production -50%, labour costs +200%. Hard work. More rain today! Keep positive. 🤞💪🥔

Potato harvest 2022. A challenging and expensive year since fixed price contracts signed last Oct/Nov. Price support is needed to store these potatoes (usually stored for 6-9 months at 2.5C)….facing an additional £225,000 in electricity cost. Difficult to get excited. 😬🥔

Well done to my 100kW Wind Turbine (and the wind!) for its highest ever monthly output at 37,349kW in Feb. That months production could power 10 UK homes for a year, but is helping to keep my autumn harvested potatoes in good condition. 😁🥔👍 #renewables #carbonfootprint

This 13ha field is being planted with Maris Piper potatoes; for delicious roasts, jackets and chips. We will plant about 450,000 or 28t of ‘seed’ potatoes and hope to harvest about 700t of crop in the autumn . 🥔😋😍🤞🏼

Potato harvest started today on some heavier silt, with the recent rain helping conditions. These Lanorma potatoes will go to the grader to be cleaned & sized and into 1t boxes and then into cold storage (2.5-3C) for marketing in the new year. 🥔😋 @GrimmeUK @DoubledayGroup

Potato packing supply contracts for 1-3 year deals appearing now. Generally about £10/t up. That is not good enough. Living wage costs up, elec up, fuel up, seed up, fert up, machinery up, water up....the risk and reward is not right. Growers must be strong. Need +£30/t.😡🥔

Had electric car 6 months. Trip says 2.6 miles/kWh. (I expect this will improve in spring/summer with less heat & light use). With electricity @ 14p/kW = 5.4p/mile, @ 30p/kW = 11.5p/mile. A diesel car doing 50mpg or 10.99mpl @ £1.26/L = 11.5p/mile or @ £1.70/L = 15.4p/mile.

4m of Wisbech series Grade 1 Silt and haven’t hit the old cockle beds yet. This block of land was reclaimed from The Wash in 1632. (Previous piling work had silt down for 16m!). Very little soil structure, but great land for sustainable food production. #Soil #TheFens

Another field finished......well, chopped up. Wet/flooded area from June/July that increased from 0.2ha to 3ha of greens, growth cracks and hollow heart. Glad I don’t have to look at it anymore down our farm lane. Massive effort from the harvesting and grading team thank you.

Another coldstore loaded with potatoes. The government energy price cap is welcomed, but still x3 electricity cost increases since contracts signed last November (13p/kW to 35p/kw?), adding £28/t cost. (Without the Govt support was looking at +£60/t just for storage).

Potato harvest. After lifting, the trailers bring them to the grader. Soil, tops and defects are removed, and the crop is split into 3 sizes into boxes. Soil is returned to the field. Defects to cattle feed and good crop goes into the cold stores at 2.5-3C for 4-9 months. 🥔😋
