Killarney welcomes c1 million tourists a year, all of whom are 'unvetted'.
Where is Danny's concern for local women and children walking by the many hotels on the Muckross Road?
Deputy Danny Healy Rae addressing a crowd of around 300 at a public meeting in Killarney about the plan to bring 70 international protection applicants to a guesthouse on Muckross Road. 'We don't know what crimes they have committed'
@kerrytodayrk
When I was working in hotels years ago I worked out that I could always get away with telling guests I had only just started working as a Hall Porter whenever I messed up a room service order.
Mad to see Fianna Fáil trying the same trick on the Irish People.
If something isn’t done to tip the balance in favour of home ownership,and disadvantage Investment Funds, we will be tenants again , like we were a hundred yrs ago. The only difference is our landlords will be investment funds based in London or New York.
I really try not to be overly cynical but I can’t deal with the coincidental timing of the ‘nice Garda completing a delivery order’ puff piece and the ‘guards being officially suspended in relation to extorting food delivery workers’ news story landing at around the same time.
@forksinthebag
Don’t know whether we should put ‘young Irish lady’ in charge of bord failte or Irish rail.
Seems like she’s get a few things sorted out.
Airbnb listings in Dublin rocket by 57% in a year, while we now have a record number of homeless.
And it isn’t t just Dublin - Maynooth Airbnb listings up more than 80% in a year as students struggle desperately to find places for the new academic year.
A driver just blithely flew through red lights at the pedestrian crossing on Cork Street when I was crossing with a kid on a scooter.
Please move forward with camera enforcement of red lights

Considering the success of shows like Game of Thrones where central characters have entirely made up names, is it really necessary to anglicize a real Irish name to make the show consumable?
@jdubspear
I had someone ask me if we’d had ‘a pink baby or a blue baby’ - I don’t think they appreciated me saying it was more of a sort of beige colour.
A big thank you to
@IBIKEDublin
for taking action on this stretch this morning.
It’s a theoretically 24 hour lane which is very messy to cycle due to drop offs/loading/cars drifting into the lane, etc.
Hopefully
@DubCityCouncil
take notice.
I've been a member of the Social Democrats for a few years now. I thought I'd chip in with what being a member entails as I hadn't a notion when I joined.
As a member, you can be as involved as you want to be. So let's membership can look like any of the below (1/x)

We’ve had a huge surge in membership throughout this campaign.
Now’s the time to get involved with the

@DarraghOBrienTD
Hi Darragh, As a resident in the Liberties I'm disappointed that planning applications currently submitted are not covered by the proposed ban. There are at least two high profile examples of this in our area. Can anything be done to address this?
As a Kerryman born and bred, who now lives in Dublin, I truly am, well, scarlet (its a good idiom in fairness), when I see rural dwelling people using 'you don't understand rural Ireland' to wave away discussion of historically stratospheric levels of car dependency.
As a Dubliner born and bred, who now lives in Co. Wexford, I truly am, well, scarleh, when I see urban, cycling, or walking-to-work smug professional Dubs telling those beyond the M50 how to live.
If women who travel to the UK are exposed to a low standard of care as claimed by No side in tonight's debate, then maybe we should take responsibility by providing high quality care in Ireland

The fresh paint on the far side is a very welcome attempt to create a meaningful cycle lane on Kevin Street (and I think reduces 2 lanes of car traffic to 1).
Very welcome but as always needs physical barrier to be real.

Still, we *are* waiting for you to ‘break your silence’ or at the very least ‘speak out’.
Of course we’ll also be very understanding if you feel the need to ‘open up’.
I use the Canal Paths every day on my way to/from work. Assume it was being ‘tidied’ for the benefit of people like me.
I don’t want it tidied, I want the people in tents given homes.

@alan_maguire
I think it gets worse as you get older too, because doing *anything* requires a commitment from people it's more difficult to just drift from acquaintance to friend in the way you would have in college.
Ireland has the highest childcare fees in the EU by a big margin (when the UK leaves). In Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Romania childcare is free. We are one of the few countries that don't regulate fees. We need a new public service model for childcare:
We used to come up to Dublin Zoo from Kerry on the train, so I find the view that public transport that isn’t door to door is unusable a bit suspect.
As someone who now cycles from the liberties to the zoo with a kid, the changes on the quays and in the park are game changing.
Me out canvassing: Hi, have you started thinking about the Local Elections?

Everything on Netflix seems like it is either a potentially good 3 season series canned after 1 season, or a potentially good 3 season series stretched out for extra seasons for commercial reasons.
TLDR - The shows all end too soon or too late.
There seems to be a wave of people joining the Social Democrats today which is amazing💜.
If you think you might be interested but aren't sure it's for you, I put together this thread a while back on what being a member is like.
TLDR - It is good.

That's like responding to complaints about flooding in a house by saying the waters went over the tabletops last time and this time it's 'only' the floors that are wrecked.
@dieworkwear
For people living in smaller spaces, vertical rather than horizontal drying racks make a huge difference.
A small thing that can help reduce the use of dryer, etc.
Like most confident (male middle class) cyclists protected cycle lanes are a 'nice to have' for me.
They are essential for less confident and/or able cyclists (e.g. my wife and kid).
It's hard to imagine someone being as consistently wrong on this stuff as yer man.
Struggling to remember the last time I saw a hit piece on a local election candidate on the front page of a national newspaper.
It’s almost like some people are threatened by Ellie isn’t it?
So in summary - membership is something I've found very positive, from being on National Council (with my then 6 year old at the table too) to currently being an ordinary member who canvasses and MCs table quizzes.
It's a choose your own adventure deal 💜

Supporting theoretical cycling infrastructure while also supporting objections to actual cycling infrastructure is not going to make anyone safer.
Support candidates who tried to make the Strand Road Cycle Lanes trial happen, not candidates who helped make sure it didn't.
Today is Bike to Work Day!
I want to make it easy for people to get to where they need to be. That’s why I want to create a 15 minute city for Dublin, where everything you need is a 15 minute walk or cycle away.

There's a subset of men who are in favour of things like the equal pay measure but as a sort of paternalistic indulgence rather than as a matter of equality.
I think it drives comments like that.
Remember, when it comes to the actual likelihood that a vehicle crash will occur at all, AND whether the consequences of a crash are serious, or even deadly, or not, speed is ALWAYS a factor. Including when the legal speed limits are currently too high.

The face of a man about to cycle 170km in a day because he signed up for it when it seemed like it was in the distant future and it seemed like a fun idea.
Killarney has been one of irelands more multicultural towns for the last 20 years or so (I remember the shift in demographics) - with basically no issues
We’ve had asylum seekers etc. accommodated in Killarney for a similar period - also with basically no issues
Apparently Killarney is Ireland's first "no-go zone" due to asylum seekers. And the town absolutely heaving with tourists as always. Really moronic stuff.
Many people are upset by my so called naivety.
1.The assumption that bike lanes and ministerial roles will solve the climate emergency is crazy
2.Fffg are not passively damaging the environment but are ideologically wedded to it..drilling licenses, mercosur, herd expansion..
Portraying daily cycling as a hobby rather than a functional mode of transport is a cute sleight of hand to trivialise demands for better infrastructure, traffic enforcement, etc.
Just seen an article where a mum who uses a bike to get around with her toddler was described as an 'avid cyclist.' Really? Are all the mums who drive to the post office with a toddler in the back of the car avid motorists? Of course not. Everyone's just trying to get around.

I remember when Dublin Bikes wa seeing introfuced there was lots of talk of ‘fine in Paris but they’ll get wrecked here’
Turns out the Dublin scheme has lower rates of vandalism.
People keep saying the tearing down statues erases history.
But doesn't the act itself create history?
The statue of a slaver being torn down by a crowd in Bristol is a historic moment.
Some protection has finally been added to this junction at the bottom of Cork Street!
Haven’t cycled it yet but interested to see how much comfort it gives when cycling straight on into Coombe (it definitely solves for people turning left onto Cork Street).

FWIW I think a lot of this is FF frustration at, as they see it, potentially being denied ‘their turn’ after waiting patiently for FG to alienate the public.

I've been dubious about Orcas on Leeson Street... but this evening a garbage truck stopped in the car lane while the guys jumped out to pick up bags instead of pulling over into the cycle lane as you'd expect them to... That is definite progress!
