I've asked at several HSE/NPHET/government briefings what Ireland's long term plan is. As in, will restrictions be needed every time cases jump. No proper answer so far - but it's time for one. This cycle of asking people to "just hang on another X weeks" isn't good enough.

The Davy story shows, once again, the lack of consequences for individuals at Irish finance firms. It's 12 years since bank execs helped crash the economy. 6 years since the tracker scandal Incredible there are still so few ways to hold them to account.

A bit surprised at some of the anger directed at the truckers demo in Dublin. I spent the day speaking to demonstrators, and none wanted to be protesting. They were ordinary people who wanted to be able to earn enough money to live on by doing their jobs.

The 2 year delay on the land tax is so depressing. We're always told fixing housing "takes time". We were told "it takes time" in 2014, when rents started soaring. We're still told "it takes time" in 2021. And since, things have arguably just got worse. Total lack of urgency.

The government looks set to again delay raising Ireland's state pension age. Dep of Finance already said it'll rise to 72. More delays could easily push it higher. So young people face working to their mid-70s. If they realised how badly they're being screwed, there'd be riots.

The Mica scandal, the tracker scandal, the Davy scandal, etc... With all, the difficulty in holding individuals to account is unreal. Accountability seems to be such a problem in Ireland's business world.

A once in a lifetime pandemic puts hundreds of thousands out of work, and Irish rent prices are *still* going up (from a high base). The market is completely broken.

A reminder: Posting your opinion on social media about Jozef Puska can contribute precisely 0 towards any trial on the killing of Ashling Murphy. But it *can* make conducting a trial more difficult, or even risk collapsing it. So please don't do it.

Some rebuttal from Gene Kerrigan to those who complain of Ireland taking in refugees. "We are not the 19th century Brits, who shrugged at famines, while the Irish ate grass. "If our compassion stops at the shores of Ireland, we are nothing more than Farage in a leprechaun hat."

As #NotMyPresident trends, a reminder once again of the president's role: He can't refuse to sign a law because he doesn't like it. Once a bill is constitutional, the president has to sign it.

Covering Kellie Harrington's homecoming today and the Portland Row community has been lovely. Small things, like a woman insisting on bringing me a chair from her garden when I was filing by the road. Really adds up. Can see where Kellie gets her great attitude.

Can we please stop doing this? A Central Bank report from literally last week shows Ireland's growth actually ranks about 8th - 12th in the EU. GDP is a hopelessly outdated measure for how well Ireland's economy is doing due to the impact of big multinationals.

It’s official: Ireland’s economy is the only economy in the EU to grow in 2020. Careful management of the public finances over recent years means that Ireland has entered the #Covid19 pandemic from a position of strength.

Most optimistic NPHET briefing in a while there. 0 new deaths. Steady drop in ICU numbers. Cases going down by about 20% week on week. Slowly moving in the right direction.

In February, the government announced €10m for Ireland's mental health services to cope with increased demand during Covid. Health committee has just been told in the 7 months since, none of that money has been used.

Some people jumping on 60% of Covid patients being vaccinated to say vaccines are ineffective. Just 8% of the adult population is unvaccinated. But they account for 40% of hospitalisations Meaning: if you're unvaccinated, you're way more likely to end up in hospital with Covid.

Bang on. Michael Fingleton was the head of a lender which cost Irish taxpayers over €5bn. The Central Bank has dropped its probe into Fingleton. And it decided to do this the Friday before Christmas, with no announcement. Speaks volumes.

Crazy there's so much interest in a family of 8 supposedly receiving €51k a year It's estimated the Irish state lost €500m in two years from vulture funds not paying tax €51k is about 0.0001% of that Maybe we should keep focused on the big picture?

New: Wrote a piece on the Irish banking industry’s response to #Covid_19 In short: the measures announced so far amount to almost nothing. Ireland’s banks owe the public. It’s time for them to repay that debt.
