Hospital Carnival Day was an annual fundraising event held in Derby in aid of local hospitals prior to the foundation of the National Health Service in 1948. The people of Derby went to great lengths with costume, stalls and decorated floats to raise vital funds. 🏥 👏

2020 marks the 180th anniversary of the opening of Derby Arboretum; thought to be England's first public park. Throughout the 19th century the anniversaries were celebrated by a balloon ascent. This tiny 2 inch square watercolour by Charlotte Vawser shows the 1850 event.

Visit @PickfordsHouse to see our toy theatres which originate from around 1800, when print sellers marketed prints of famous actors and actresses of the day. Their trade soon allowed theatre enthusiasts to build miniatures model theatres and stage plays in their own homes.
