UNBELIEVABLE: scientists invent a new type of electrified road that continually charges EV's whilst they're in motion! How interesting - modern technology is so cool!
In a few weeks, a one-day V/Line ticket will be capped at $9.20, the same as a one-day metropolitan fare. I'm *very* tempted to see if I can make it from one frontier of Victoria to another (Mildura to Mallacoota) which would cost approximately one cent per kilometre travelled.
Saw Jonny Bairstow waiting for a train this morning. The poor lad really doesn't know how to stay behind a line. Maybe he'll figure it out one day.

A bad poll for the federal government. Expect an upcoming announcement on more vaccines for young people, more wasteful train station carparks, and a business case into a high speed train from Melbourne to Sydney.

People on Twitter giving The Castle, a very harmless and almost universally loved film about a houseproud family, the Well Ackchyually treatment is some of the most terminally online tweeting I've seen in more than ten years on this hellhole.
See this? This is great PT comms. "Our services are delayed today- here's exactly what happened, and here's what we're doing about it." So much better than a vague "Blue Line - Major delays. Due to a track fault, Blue line services are disrupted. Please allow extra travel time."
⚠️ Some trains are running late across various lines this morning due to urgent track repairs at Central. Here is an image of the culprit.
Our team is on site and working to rectify this issue ASAP.
We thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding.
The problem with Lime E-scooters is that they're just too unsafe. All E-scooters should be confiscated and replaced with safer vehicles which are more suited to busy urban environments, like this 2.5 tonne Chevrolet Silverado with a reasonable top speed of 185 km/h.
Kind of staggering how devoid of vegetation some activity centres are. Greenery and commercial areas don't have to be mutually exclusive of one another - Metropolitan Melbourne really needs to take urban greening more seriously.

Cool transport fact:
The Alamein railway line terminates just 2km short of the biggest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere (Chadstone,) but there's no bus connection between the two.
Very useful !
I'm no fan of Djokovic, but his entry should have been a simple yes or no. The fact that he was able to fly all the way here before the federal border force turned around and said "ah hang on, maybe not!" reflects poorly on us. A further example of our national mismanagement.
There's something nice about getting on a long distance train and having a small kiosk available to grab a coffee and a roll. Providing a comfortable high amenity service is really welcome for long distance commuters and leisure travellers. 🚆
Whenever I look at this old tram map of mine (which is often) I think to myself how cool an east-west tram line along Brunswick Road would be. It'd link nine other tram lines and three train lines, also it'd only require about 5.5km of new track. Can imagine it'd stack up well!
Latest map to add to my collection of transport paraphernalia:
Adhesive tram route guide from the MMTB - 1979. In immaculate condition. Will look great framed!
Ever thought some rail lines just happen to feel a bit faster than others? You're right! Thought I'd crunch some numbers to see who fares better in terms of average speed for a terminus to CBD journey, and here are the results. Outer west tends to fare better than outer southeast
Did you know that apart of France's loss to the Matildas last night, the French Government owes Australia a small fleet of their new TGV trains? Wild I know!
Sleeper cabins book out way in advance on the Melbourne to Sydney train, however, in a few years there'll disappointingly be no sleeper option.
An overnight, 11 hour journey, with no sleeper service. What a downgrade.

How many commercial networks would be willing to run a televised program which regularly scrutinises the actions and content from that exact same network?
The answer would be none, and that's why the ABC, and the programs like

Remember that "revolutionary" new pizza vending machine the private owners of Southern Cross were harping on about? Yeah well now its a photobooth. Woeful.
Former surface-level carpark at Balaclava station replaced by 46 community housing dwellings and ground floor retail space.
Massive win for housing options and good land use 🚶🏢
Late to the party but a thought on the QLD 50c fare: A large component of a fare system is having the infrastructure and enforcement in place to get passengers to pay the fare. 50c is so low you've got to think - what's the point of not going the full monty and making it free.
Love to see it. Further justification for The Overland to operate services each day of the week once more. Operating a full weekly service was possibly considered a pipe dream in the mid 2000's when the service was dying, but now we have more justification than ever.
The Overland, known by South Aussies as “The Melbourne Express” is experiencing a resurgence, providing a cheaper alternative to travel amid continuously high cost of living prices.
Passengers pay $135 to get onboard the 135-year-old service that travels from Adelaide to
No one driving down Queens Way in this picture. Clearly this means no one drives down Queens Way at all. We should therefore get rid of Queens Way. I am very smart.
Every 10 minute weekend trains through the south and southeast are a great success story. Close to 400 people on board a morning up-Pakenham service today. With changing leisure travel patterns, it'll be great to see this winning solution rolled out to other parts of Melbourne
Its absolutely insane to me just how some working in the environmental policy space can't seem to figure out just how important good public transport is for improving environmental outcomes in our cities and towns. Beyond painful.
Unlike cars, it's not yet clear what role public transport will play in decarbonisation.
Our take: buses and trains probably won't make a big dent in climate targets, but we should be worried that passengers may miss out on the big savings EVs bring.
Taking a tour on one of Melbourne's most obscure bus routes today - the 695F from Dandenong Market to Emerald, running only once a week! The driver even double checked with me to make sure I was getting on the right bus!
Over 100 people at this inspection for an "entry level" dwelling in Melbourne's south this morning. Can't see the housing situation getting better anytime soon. 🥲🙃
Many people get dashcams to protect themselves from/document bad drivers on our roads, so I find it remarkable how many people with dashcams are themselves the bad drivers. Complete lack of self awareness. Anyone with half a brain could see what was about to happen here...
Remember to always give way to trams. If you can’t, make sure you upload the video to DCOA, so everyone can see how much of an idiot you are.

This slipped under the radar a bit - but yesterday Daniel Andrews became the longest serving Premier from the Labor Party, and the fifth longest serving Premier of Victoria all up.

Hi

@metrotunnelvic
these rail replacement staff are often on 12 hour shifts at a time, spending all that time outside on the station concourses. On a day like today, shouldn't the staff members be supplied with face masks?

I'll always be a bus advocate but when you hop off a bus and then get on a tram its so apparent just how much better the passenger experience is on a tram compared to a bus in almost every way. To put it simply, trams just rule.
'Autopilot' hit-run driver has been jailed for nine months after mowing down a nurse at an Armadale tram stop in 2022. Sakshi Agrawal initially lied to police but pleaded guilty on the eve of her trial.

Interesting work from Infrastructure Victoria - a proposal for 11 BRT priority corridors for enhanced rapid bus services. Would be of particular benefit to the outer west, outer north, and middle east.
Almost like affordability is a large factor in how livable a city is?!?! Perhaps a continuous rapid rise in property values year on year isn't actually good for livability if the cost of housing is out of reach? Interesting!!!!
It has consistently been judged as one of the most livable cities in the world, but unlike most other Australian capitals, property prices have been falling.

Why would a country with net migration levels at a record high and rapid post-Covid population growth be considering cuts to its infrastructure pipeline?
The Victorian Govt is stepping in the right direction on this one.
The Victorian government is pushing ahead with plans to start tunnelling the $34.4 billion first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop despite Canberra refusing to commit funding for the project beyond an initial $2.2 billion.
Approching 11pm on a Thursday and I just disembarked from a tram with over 100 passengers. So good to see our city bouncing back with strength.
Love your effort, Melbourne 🧡❤💙
G1 today, G2 tomorrow!
Our 100 new G Class trams are being built with future capacity in mind. Two additional articulated modules can be easily added without major refitting, which would increase the length of each tram by to 35 metres in length - even longer than an E Class!
Didn't really pay much attention at the time, however the Victorian Socialists Political Party have begun to grab some serious numbers in a couple of areas in the west and north. This keeps up and they'll overtake the Greens soon.
Great to see the deadlock is over regarding MARL. I can see the rationale for an underground option however getting on with the job and striving for an early 2030's opening is the most pragmatic outcome for all parties. Now let's get shovels in the ground!
Once the North East Link is done in 2028, Melbourne will have a 90km+ orbital motorway from Frankston to Laverton. Keep that in mind next time you're told that Melbourne somehow doesn't warrant or deserve a 90km orbital railway for the next generation.

Always done my head in that Chicago has multiple stations with the same name. No doubt the locals are fine with it but as a non Chicagoan it strikes me as a recipe for confusion. Even if you were to say "meet me at Blue Line Western Station..." its a case of "which one???"
Melbourne is pretty full at the moment. Evidently lots of tourists and visitors flocking in at this time of year. Few things I like more than seeing people come from across the globe to enjoy our city. Ignore the bores/columnists who think there's no reason to come here. ❤️🌆
Great day to be able to take a sneak peek through the under construction Metro Tunnel! Opportunities like this don't come around every day, and it's great to see this city-shaping project is very much on schedule. 🚇🚉
Someone in the media has a bit of an obsession lately regarding a "second CBD." Article upon article this week. Do we even need a designated second CBD? I think not. Plan Melbourne designates 16 Metro Activity Centres and NEIC's - strengthen them over time and be done with it.
Owning an electric CAR should never give you the right to drive in a BUS lane -nor should it entitle you to free fares on other modes of transport. These are regressive policies designed by the trillion dollar motoring empire, ideas like this are not about the environment at all.
