Leadership role expectations:
- 24/7 thought leadership
- Conference speaking
- Podcasts interviews
Leadership role reality:
- Saying the same things over again consistently at scale
- Asking two teams if they’ve talked to each other
- Finding where that Google doc is
My holiday tradition is going on GoFundMe to find campaigns of people raising money for their cat’s vet bills. I find the ones most off track and donate the entire amount.
I had a manager who had our design team update our personal portfolios every quarter. It startled a lot of people who wondered why she would have us do that. The more you let go, the more you enable retention.
A few examples of what resonated throughout the process...
There are two types of people:
1. Those who download their company logo from their brand asset library
2. Those who search Google images for their company logo.
I’d love more boring friends. I rarely drink alcohol, focusing on eating clean, and enjoy being at home to research, learn, tinker, experience music/movies, and that’s about it.
Imagine being in the place of privilege where societal and political discussions is simply a distraction vs. being what directly impacts your life.
So tired of this “works on my machine” mindset.
Should Stripe ever decide to IPO, its liquidity event for employees might be larger than if they founded their own companies.
Being entrepreneurial and contributing to startups doesn’t mean you have to be the founder. It’s okay to be an employee.
After almost four years at
@Webflow
, my chapter comes to a close this week. In many ways, I thought I'd be there for the rest of my career. I'm grateful to have worked with incredible people, on a product I believe so much in.
Budget planning for engineering: "$2m for EC2 instances? Sounds great!"
Budget planning for design: "Whoa, whoa. What's this tool 3 people need that's $9.99 a month?"
After nearly 20 years, I said goodbye to my best friend today. I knew this day would come when I first got you as a 10-week old kitten, and in other ways, I thought you’d be around forever.
You’re at peace now. Thank you for all the memories. I’ll miss you so much, Wilson.
It’s bizarre to me how much time people spend time rationalizing what city is the best. It’s what you make of it. Embrace where you live and know it is the second best city next to New York.
Twice a year, I send an email update to a group of people who made a huge impact on my career. I write an update similar founders do with investor to let them know how I’m doing and asks.
I also remind them the impact they made on me. Keep thanking those who backed you.
Some personal news:
I joined Replit as an Operating Partner, Design + Research. I’m excited to partner with
@HayaOdeh
to bring the best collaborative coding experience to the most accessible operating system—the browser.
Me years ago: My goal is to teach at this prestigious design school.
Me now: I want to teach at a community college so it’s easier for people to get access to me.
I'm writing about how art school kids are built different. If you now work in engineering/design/product and studied art, I'd love to hear how it helped you in your role today.
There are so many Design Director or higher roles in the market right now—the most I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a revolving door or the same leaders switching roles.
The design industry didn’t develop a leadership pipeline and we are seeing the results of it.
I’ve been rejected from
❌ Apple
❌ Airbnb
❌ Etsy
❌ Dropbox
❌ Google
❌ LinkedIn
❌ Netflix
❌ Pandora
❌ Stripe
❌ Square
The good news: none of these were personally and you only need one yes.
I've been rejected from
❌ Anomaly (hired a yr later)
❌ R/GA (hired 7 yrs later)
❌ Google (offered a job 4 yrs later)
❌ Facebook (walked away from interview 4 yrs later)
❌ Tinder (ghosted once it was down 2 candidates)
Moral of the story: what goes around comes back around
Some people have the ability to unlock opportunities for people simply by forwarding an email, yet don't do it enough.
Leveraging your network to help others is so important. There is a duty that comes with being in a position of power and influence.
After an incredible year at
@Replit
, I'm saying farewell to amazing people working on an ambitious mission I personally care deeply about—feels like yesterday I started as an advisor and quickly joined full-time.
Some personal news: I started a new role at Replit as VP of Marketing and Design—two orgs at the heart of CX. We have an ambitious mission and I'm looking to connect with folks in AI, Dev Rel, and Brand & Creative to join us.
Great managers work on career development for their team members for not only while they are at the company and go beyond. I still talk to many former direct reports about career development and always will be there for them.
The way a leader treats you when you leave a company is telling of their character.
Do they support you in your career the same way when they tried to recruit you? No matter how challenging it can be, they should always treat you with class as you exit.
Things I immediately do when setting up a new Mac.
- Turn off all system notifications
- Turn off autocorrect
- Set ⌘-V to "Paste and Match Style" to remove formatting
Spotting talent in what people can become is much harder than evaluating current experience.
What attributes and behaviors come to mind that give you a signal on someone’s trajectory?
We currently have 18 (!!!) roles open at
@webflow
across Design, Engineering, Marketing, People, Product, and Sales.
Two things you can do to help us:
1. Apply if you're interested!
2. Boost this for BIPOC candidates to be aware of the opportunities
Huge congrats to
@nlevin
on his new role as VP of Product Design at Figma. Incredibly honored to know you as a friend and exciting to see more design execs! 👏
The past 36 hours have been so devastating. My heart is shattered. The house is so quiet without him around.
The first photo I took of him 19 years ago and one of the final ones.
I miss him so much.
We really need companies to stop using being a small or early startup as an excuse to be negligent about accessibility, DEI, and ethics.
Starting with this in the first place is how you truly scale.
The best managers I've had all have one thing in common. They are great orchestrators—putting the work in behind the scenes making everyone on their team look like the star.
I keep sketchbooks, scan them, and keep a digital library of my analog ideas. Why? Digital note taking is hard for me to remember and recall. Here are a few screens of my workflow in how I organize them.
Uninstalled work apps on the phone, put the work laptop in a locker, and off for a week. What you see here is all I’m using as I rest, recover, and explore. ✌️
I've often seen after you have people update their portfolio, they are so proud of what they've done that it re-ignites what they're working on and motivated to stay even longer.
I feel for people starting in tech now. When I started, I learned directly from experienced designers, product managers, and engineers—pairing and collaborating in the studio/office. It feels like that's been replaced with an abundance of paid courses.
Someone asked me how often I think about the designers I used to manage.
The answer is simple. All the time.
I’ll always feel invested in their life and professional career beyond the time we worked together.
This is next level.Nikita:
built an app called tbh where teens could compliment each other, anonymously. Facebook bought the app and shut it down. Nikita vested out, then
built an app called Gas where teens could compliment each other, anonymously. Discord bought the app and…
Though I appreciate the love for Webflow, Figma is an incredible tool. Our design team uses Figma to explore possibilities and constraints can be set with it.
Creator tools have different purposes and resonate with various people.
I think Brand Design and Product Design will look very different in the next few years as AI/ML becomes more naturalized. There will be a stark contrast between efficiently manufactured and iconic/expressive—harmonious, not at odds. BD will do more product and PD more engineering
I am often concerned when companies are remote-friendly only for engineering. What does that say about how they perceive the value of engineering?
At Webflow, whether you’re an engineer, product manager, EA, marketing person (and more), remote is not only welcome, it’s the norm.
Today marks four years together. Who knew one brunch at Gjelina in Venice would lead to this. Jessica was ready to start dating again and I was the “test date.” Things in life often don’t happen as you plan it. Be happy that it happened. ❤️
I’m applying the rule “don’t use a computer until your intention is clear.” I wrote two posts on pen and paper. It took 10m to type it up on a word processor then spent most the time editing—same method with design. It’s helped my effectiveness and quality of life tremendously.
So sad to hear about the layoffs at InVision. It was a company that helped put design on the map with some incredible people.
My team at Webflow is hiring and we are looking for:
- Product Design Director (Growth)
- Product Design Manager
- Product Designers across many teams
