The Moon made a guest appearance in our satellite images of the Sun on Feb. 23-24! The Moon appears to reverse course partway through 🌑↩️ — but that’s an effect caused by the relative motion between the Moon and our Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite, which took the images.

@martinmbauer Not really. There’s no reason why the probability of abiogenesis could not be <10^(-22), in which case this is it. We have no fundamental theory for how life began. There could be a lot out there, but assuming so is not an evidence-based belief, rather it’s a position of faith.

Update - sadly our plans to look for #exomoons with #JWST has been shot down. Very disappointed as we had 2 targets for which we could rigorously show that moons were expected to i) form, ii) persist and iii) be detectable with JWST.

A common question I keep getting - "what is going on with #JWST + #exomoons ?" In short, JWST is the first machine humanity has ever built that capable of detecting moons akin to those found in the Solar System. Will JWST actually attempt this? I don't know.

JWST Cycle 3 will be historic! The age of #exomoons is upon us

We just learned what JWST will look at in its 3rd year of science. So much cool stuff! - Enceladus - 1000s of early galaxies - Direct collapse black holes? - TRAPPIST-1 - Pulsar planets - And yes... exomoons! Here's the wonderful science, by me, @SciAm

I wish disagreements started from a position of “I feel differently, let’s talk it out”, rather than vitriolic, rage-fueled tantrums demonizing each other. Is it the human condition that we can’t compassionately disagree with one another?

Startling result. It’s Jupiters all the way down…. Seems like planets really can form in a similar way to stars. Cue arguments on planethood and moon definitions!

This is an incredible paper, with the discovery of a pile of free-floating planets in a young star-forming region (Orion/Trapezium). The craziest part: 9% are binaries! Like, two Jupiters orbiting each other -- but not orbiting a star!

The Moon is ~400x smaller than the Sun but ~400x further away => same angular diameter (0.5°) - which is why #TotalEclipse2024 happens! Interestingly, for the exomoon candidate K1625b-i, this is also true! From K1625b, star is (0.93±0.01)° and K1625b-i is (0.95±0.17)°. To scale:

One way or another we will stop burning fossil fuels at current rates. The options are 1) it’s on our terms through a technological transition 2) we run out of fossil fuels to burn 3) civilization collapses to a dramatically reduced industrial output. 2 leads to 3. I pick door 1.

Now and again, I like to reflect back on this image of our home planet. Society feels like a resistance to entropy, seeking harmony against forces of chaos. I suspect we’ll one day end by surrendering to the discord, but I believe we can fight that fate for a bit longer.

The number of habitable planets per star, Eta Earth, varies by a factor of ~100 in the literature. These are all using the same data set, @NASAKepler , and considering the same stellar type, FGK dwarfs. Rarely do astronomers disagree so wildly on the same data! So why?! 1/5

I asked my five year old for questions he’d want me to tackle in a video… How did the Universe get created? Is the multiverse real? What happens inside of a black hole? What are aliens like? I feel like he’s the ultimate click bait machine.

I am increasingly convinced that any civilization that goes to the enormous effort of building a Dyson sphere/swarm like megastructure would almost certainly want to extend the star's main sequence lifetime via starlifting. More here
