Invited to present at a medical conference about Long COVID. I’m told the conference is only permitting in person presentations. I’ve declined the offer, told them in-person only perpetuates ableism, and it’s not acceptable in this day & age. End.
Today, 10 days after 1st testing positive for
#COVID19
round 2, my lateral flow is finally negative. So what did I learn about this reinfection as a person with
#LongCOVID
🧵
Death and hospitalisation are not the only outcomes. The false dichotomy of “death Vs quick recovery”, has been a cause of delegitimising COVID causing prolonged illness. Disability and
#LongCOVID
remain largely ignored in the pandemic narrative, and even more so around
#Omicron
.
I feel like I repeat myself sometimes. So I’ll try do it in one tweet for fun.
#LongCOVID
is not burnout.
Exercise is a type of physical activity.
All forms of physical activity are exertion.
If exertion makes symptoms worse, you can’t exercise or think your way out of it.
Appologies if my tweet was not clear. This is a UK medical conference aimed at GPs and other health professionals. I was invited to present on the topic of Long COVID. I have the physical ability to attend in person. I’ve chosen not to accept the invitation and made it clear why.
Even to this day it still feels like a kick in the gut when you share your lived experience of a
#LongCOVID
health challenge with a team you’ve been referred to for specialist input, for the Dr to roll their eyes and say “yeah but I’ve never seen that … seems unlikely” 🤬
So … got COVID again! 🥺
Cough started yesterday evening. Lateral flow positive this morning. Will try get onto an antiviral study ASAP.
Reinfection after
#LongCOVID
. Let’s see what flavour this one has to offer.
I find how people react differently to fatigue fascinating. My sister is pregnant & has fatigue. People are saying rest, don’t over exert, look after yourself. When I had severe
#LongCOVID
fatigue I had advice to try yoga, do a bit more each day, keep pushing/trying. What gives?
Today was a big day. We went cycling. Last time was Sept 2020 the day before my huge Long COVID crash. I’m now largely symptom free, stable, & no more PESE. I’ve noticed ⬆️ ability to exert myself more. Today felt like the time, & my ability, was right. And it felt fab to do it.
I am living with
#LongCOVID
. I am experiencing multi-dimensional and episodic disability, across all dimensions of disability. My primary symptom is fatigue & post-exertion malaise. Along with other symptoms. I want to describe the nature & extent of disability I experience.
I am so happy to share that on 16th November 2022 I will be awarded a Fellowship of
@thecsp
for global impact achieved through clinical, academic and strategic leadership in the fields of
#HIV
and
#LongCOVID
This is a huge honour & privilege
Was a pleasure to present this evening on
#LongCOVID
at
#Physio21
but I need to make it explicitly clear:
- Long COVID is not deconditioning
- We need to differentiate phenotypes and not confuse post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) with Long COVID (side note: ppl can have both)
5) Ive now returned to what was the new
#LongCOVID
baseline. But noticed improved smell/taste and lower resting & exertional heart rate now 🤯🤷🏻♂️. I feel like my body has been recalibrated, like it’s reacting more proportionally after re-infection. I don’t understand this.
16 months of
#LongCOVID
and today I achieved:
🗓 1 month of working full time
👨⚕️working 6 days straight + oncall
🕺🏼dancing in my bedroom on Thurs (no setback)!
Over time I’ve had 2 crashes 📉 2 vaccines 💉& lots of support. Could this be the💡at the end of an episodic tunnel🛣
Hearing so many incredible stories of people slowly recovering from
#LongCOVID
with pacing as the rehabilitation approach used (including myself). Stories from different countries, settings and groups of people. Pacing really does work!
I am overjoyed to announce I have been appointed to Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (
#OBE
) in the Kings Birthday Honours List 2024, awarded for services to the
@NHS
and people living with
#HIV
and AIDS and people with
#LongCOVID
4) I knew the value of rest and time for recovery. This time I’ve properly rested. I’ve done some work on my computer. But I’ve remained in isolation and it’s permitted me time to heal. I didn’t do that in 2020. I was trying to exercise straight away. This time, I rested.
10) Final add on … for those saying they will “watch and wait ” for my crash. That’s mean. See point 6. I’m not an idiot. I’m also not new to the rodeo. So I’d ask you kindly refrain.
So everything the
#MECFS
community warned us about is coming true. Infiltration of
#PACE
trialists across responses to
#LongCOVID
without apology or transparency. Changing language to pull the wool over our eyes and further their agenda. And without checking, orgs are complicit.
9) Lastly. I’ve re-learned prioritising life, love, and strength in connection. Triggers for change often cycle around health challenges. I hope this trigger is a further prioritisation of self-care and self-worth.
7) I was previously appropriately fearful of reinfection because of how much round 1 COVID turned my life upside down. I now feel like I’ve got the personal resources to cope. I DO NOT want COVID again, and do not wish it on anybody. I will continue to live life safely 😷
#LongCovid
🧵 I’ve worked in rehab for many years. I’ve spent my career promoting physical activity & exercise w marginal impact; most are uninterested. No matter what health condition, getting ppl to understand ⬆️moving = good, has not worked. But now I’m asking for caution 1/n
My GP surgery just called me (unexpected) as I’m on a watch list for
#COVID19
(which I think is awesome as I had no idea) ... and it’s official ... I’ve just been referred to a
#LongCovid
clinic ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Faith in the system has just been restored. Feel emotional.
6) Im cautiously optimistic for no longer term issues after round 2. I know I felt fine after the acute phase of round 1 (for a few months) before
#LongCOVID
hit. So I’m gonna be watchful, careful, and continue to pace, prioritise and plan.
1) This was nothing like 2020. I had less symptoms, they were less severe. I still felt rough. But in comparison to round 1, this was much easier. Having both vaccine induced (x3 Pfizer) and natural immunity must have helped.
With conservative
#LongCOVID
prevalence estimates at 10% … we can translate todays 78,610 new U.K.
#COVID19
cases into 7,861 new Long COVID diagnosis on 9th March 2022. It will likely be higher numbers, yet this mass disabling event remains absent from pandemic narratives 😔
So if
#LongCOVID
occurs in approx. 10-30% of cases … this would mean in 3 months time we’re looking at a range of 140k-420k new cases of Long COVID and disability due to new
#COVID
infections over the past 2 weeks … maybe we need to better
#CountLongCOVID
We've recorded 1.4m cases in England in last 2 weeks alone.
Even if Omicron less severe we know *nothing* about its long term impact. Even if less likely to cause long covid, *hundreds of thousands* more people likely to suffer long covid - affecting them *and* economy. 13/18
Thank you to everybody who is tagging me into posts. I’m currently off work sick with a
#LongCOVID
relapse, so I won’t be responding on social media at this time. Much love all. (PS: I will recover from this episode 💪)
It’s becoming apparent that maybe we need to convene a collaborative of the good, sensible, and literate, to publish an outline of what SAFE and GOOD
#LongCOVID
rehab research looks like. Methods. Outcomes. Metrics. Success. Implementation. Whose game for some team work?
3) I took my healthcare into my own hands. 🚨This is not advise. Don’t follow me.🚨 I couldn’t access anti-virals. But I increased my inhalers, I managed any rise in temperature with paracetamol, and introduced aspirin (
#teamclots
). Speak to a doctor, don’t copy me.
This week I worked a full week (first time since Sept 2020), I did something fun one evening, I went out for dinner with my partner, and today I spent time out in nature (yes in London 🤯). I feel like things are really on a good trajectory
#LongCOVID
.
#pacing
does work!
8) People can be amazing. The kindness, care, and compassion of others always makes my heart sing. Those who have checked in on me, sent kind words, or been available. Thank you 💙🙏🏻.
Many w
#LongCOVID
are new to
#Ableism
that ppl w
#disability
endured for a long time. Share w me the
#ableist
phrase that gets you every time & your resolution request. Here’s mine:
🤦🏻♂️Phrase: “have you tried yoga?
🙏🏻Request: “Have you found things that help you?”
2) I was better prepared. I monitored my vitals (SpO2, temp, heart rate) regularly. I recorded and tracked my symptoms. I shared these with loved ones via a Google doc.
I thought I’d developed thick skin over the invalidation, armed myself with evidence and literature. But when my self-management attempts were laughed off, despite 20 months waiting for this appointment, it naffs me off I’ve left with not much other than feeling belittled.
An estimated 120 million people living with Long COVID globally (and more than 2 million in the UK), yet Long COVID remains absent from the dialogue surrounding the positivity of “mild” acute
#Omicron
. Disability matters. We need to better
#CountLongCOVID
.
Today is my
#LockdownBirthday
and I’m so grateful to my amazing boyfriend who has done everything he could to make it the best day possible. Love you Carlos 🥰
Signed off work for 2 weeks with post-COVID syndrome. In an effort to truly practice self care, I’m turning off all social media and emails. I will not be reading or replying to anything for this time. 👋
@RhodaWatkins10
Me pre-
#LongCOVID
… not deconditioned, not unfit, not unwell, not co-morbid, not anything other than living life to the max. I’m lucky 2 years in, i’m now fully functional, through careful pacing, inhalers, and a shit tonne of supplements & rest
Seriously ... what is this
#CovidVaccine
doing? I’m improving MORE
#LongCOVID
after 2nd
#Pfizer
dose 2 weeks ago 💙🎉 I just had to climb 2 flights of stars at the train station ... exertional HR 104 no symptoms ... 1 month ago same activity HR >160, breathless & exhaustion. 😳
@EHRC
We are working hard to scientifically demonstrate the disability experiences of people with
#LongCOVID
. There is however enough data already in circulation (eg:
@ONS
) to demonstrate the prevalence of disability under U.K. Equality Act Disability Definition 2010 for example 👇
Tonight I got home and cried. I’m being openly fragile, as many of my
#NHS
colleagues, patients and their loved ones have been with me. In this uncertain time of
#COVID19
, I can’t figure out why tonight I was more fragile than normal. I think it’s both happiness and sadness (1/n)
Problem w post-exertional symptom exacerbation
#PESE
#PEM
is nobody sees it. It’s invisible. Today I can’t get out of bed after 1min sit-stand test in
#LongCOVID
clinic Thurs. The difference between paced activities & exercise is academic to some. To me it’s my life & disability.
Today I resigned from my job. I’ve loved my current job. And served in the NHS with pride and passion. I’ve accepted this new position and I’m super excited for the next step in my career. I’m changing paths to something new. And I’m genuinely exhilarated with this change.
Today I got home after a weeks holiday exploring Suffolk & Norfolk with the boyf. We had an amazing time & loved the coast. I was also
#LongCOVID
symptom free despite being very busy & active. Here’s a beach pic 🧵 on a particular thought about the terms “tired” & “fatigue”.
Im totally blown away with the sense of belonging, honesty, integrity and vulnerability that has been shared across day 1 of
#LCPForum
. Together we connected. And with that we are and will create change. I’m looking forward to day 2 tomorrow.

I feel so lucky to share my story with

#Frontline
thank you for allowing me the opportunity and the space to talk about my experiences and

I’m also laughing so hard at my sunburnt forehead that matches my

🤣🥵🤪
@gareththomas14
Gareth well done for feeling able to speak about living with HIV. You are, as you have always been, incredibly strong and graceful. I wish you the best of luck tomorrow for the tough challenge with iron man. As an outstanding athlete I’m sure you will smash it!
Today marks 365 days since I first developed symptoms of acute
#COVID19
. One year of living with
#LongCOVID
. My
#COVIDAnniversary
. I was going to record a
@LongCOVIDPhysio
podcast to acknowledge the day. But my head is all over the show today with mixed emotions 1/7
Resting heart rate 68BPM. Walking a few minutes to train station my heart rate doubles. It’s done this consistently since having
#LongCOVID
. I don’t climb stairs at work because it rises to 180BPM. I’m waiting for an ECHO, CPET & Lung Function Test to see if there’s a reason.
THIS IS MASSIVE 🥳
This year I was denied the opportunity to donate convalescent plasma after contracting COVID19 despite being in a monogamous long term relationship & having no risk of blood borne viruses
I CAN’T TELL YOU ENOUGH HOW BIG THIS IS 🎉
“Mild” acute COVID (as defined by WHO as the absence of pneumonia requiring pharmacological treatment, oxygen or hospital admission) is more likely to cause
#LongCOVID
among economically active, younger people and women.
This is so exciting!!!
#LongCOVID
Im proud to collaborate with

as an expert advisor
They are impressively:
1️⃣ mission-led
2️⃣ patient-led
3️⃣ moving faster than institutions
Today, we're launching the Visible Beta app for
#LongCovid
and
#MECFS
.
We want to make tracking your condition and taking part in research available to as many people as possible, as soon as possible.
Here's more about what we're building:👇🧵1/7
I feel like the
@PublicHealthW
COVID Recovery app for
#LongCOVID
still doesn’t get it. Exercise is not a cure all. This type of messaging can be so harmful and remains insidious in many responses to Long COVID. Our activist work is not done by a long shot. There’s much to do.
#LongCOVID
needs safe and effective treatments
#TreatLongCOVID
beyond the recognition and measurement of symptoms, to ensure that the disability and life impacts can be addressed. This needs biomedical research to better understand the mechanisms causing symptoms & disability.
Im enraged at the level of transphobia throughout Physiotherapy. Individuals, leadership, & more. I have zero words to describe how utterly disgusted I am at every single ounce of transphobia in our profession. It’s insidious & it’s endorsed by those at the top.

@KingsCollegeNHS
finding further objective measures of impairment with

. Pleased i’m now beginning to get some sort of answers, as I’m finally being investigated. But that’s coupled with a sense of vulnerability at learning what’s wrong.
Tonight’s
@C4Dispatches
#dispatches

was sensitive and well pitched. It’s great to hear that the trajectory (albeit a long one) is that of improving, and the focus is NOT to push people. Let’s hope access to safe & effective
#rehab
is equitable for all
My first attempt at a TeleHealth clinic today. Summary = failure. Technology issues at the hospital, technology issues for every patient. Can’t see. Can’t hear. Resort to phone. Can’t do what I need by phone 🤦🏻♂️... patience is a virtue. TeleHealth is not easy, it’s exhausting.
It’s an honour to be awarded the
@HIVandRehab
Elisse Zack Award for Excellence in HIV Rehabilitation.
It’s a privilege to be the 1st European & person from the UK, recognised alongside so many incredible leaders in

Emerging evidence of pathogen reactivation following

. Could we translate learning from other knowledge areas? Eg: the presentation of Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS)? 🧵
As we learn more about
#LongCOVID
quickly, whilst applying the lessons from other post-viral illnesses eg:
#ME
/CFS… why has
@NHSEngland
chosen a copy of pulmonary rehab as their example of Long COVID rehab?
So many anecdotal reports of people living with
#LongCovid
having symptoms relapse after
#CovidVaccine
, for maybe a week or so, and then feeling much better. Me included. Super weird. Super interesting. Researchers TAKE MY BLOOD🩸 🙏🏻❤️
I know there’s no cure for Long COVID. I’m not nieve enough to think I’m immune from future relapses or episodes. I’m happy in this moment & feel that victories can be shared & celebrated. I’ll continue pacing, listening to my body, but thankfully also living my life 💙 (end)
Exciting day: 2nd

After the 1st dose my
#LongCOVID
symptoms were worse for 1 week, but then alleviated after 3 weeks. The threshold I could exert myself ⬆️. Feels like that’s “wearing off” so I’m happy to get a “top up” today
Thank you

I am SO VERY EXCITED that a HUGE piece of work that has been in development since Feb 2021 … is coming *VERY* soon (fingers crossed this week 🤞). Watch this space

DO NOT PRESCRIBE EXERCISE AND CBT FOR PEOPLE WITH LONG COVID, FATIGUE & POST-EXERTIONAL SYMPTOM EXACERBATION
I’m looking for my next career move. I’ve worked in the NHS all my adult life and known no different. I’d love to hear some Twitter treats on transitions, change, and opportunities.
@BernieBissett
@UniCanberra
@ESSA_NEWS
what patient and public involvement was conducted in the funding of this study, considering it goes AGAINST existing guidelines. I’m shocked this has been funded and frankly outraged our profession continues to push harm on people with energy limiting disabilities.
And I’m somewhat confused. I’m flummoxed. I’m dumbfounded. Now anyone appears to be rehab experts, promoting physical activity & exercise, despite calls for caution from lived experiences of potential harm from within & beyond, incl allies 2/n
Asking for caution, or at least a period of pause, to reflect on good intentions and mitigate unintended consequences, is not a big ask. It’s kindness and an evidenced based approach, to do no harm. Surely that’s our duty 3/n
Today 93,045 new
#COVID
cases reported. In 3 months (11th March 2022) if at least 10% develop

Todays new
