I'm thrilled to announce the launch of the
@IIPP_UCL
's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Map this 11 June. This new tool provides valuable resources for researchers, policy-makers, DPI builders, and advocates.
My mom passed a few days ago. There will likely be pieces written about her work, but I wanted to write something that got to the core of who she was. I hope those who knew her see her in it. And those who didn't get a chance to see her. Love to all.
Hi everyone, a bit of personal news. Very excited to share I'll be joining the
@IIPP_UCL
as an Associate Professor in
#Digital
#Government
and Deputy Director for Strategy & Operations.
So excited to share that today
@TPSDigitalAge
published the syllabus for teaching about technology and public administration. Anyone interested in teaching on this can get our open access syllabus here!
Please be cautious here. I’ve organized lots of hackathons. They are wonderful at ideating and seeing what is possible.
Not sure this is the time for that.
Maybe the first step is to talk to health Canada or a local Gov to find out what would be useful.
All right
#Canada

#Germany
has showed us a way forward. Now its our turn. Who is in?

Cannot stress how critical
@pahlkadot
is. She’s positively altered the trajectory of the convo around tech & gov more than anyone I can think of. She also positively altered the trajectory of so many people’s lives - my own in ways I cannot count & remain profoundly grateful.
Super excited about my upcoming exec ed program on Digital Transformation in Government here at
@Kennedy_School
in March. If you work in government would love to have you join us. Details here, drop me a DM and I can connect you with the right people.
My students from this semester’s course just sent me the nicest online card. Am slowly reading every comment - I think all 120 wrote something. I’m a overcome, grateful and a wreck all at the same time.
Hey world!
@pahlkadot
's much anticipated book "Recoding America" is out today. Cannot suggest enough that you get a copy!!! Ezra Klein says its the book he wishes every policy leader would read... and he's 💯right. (or here: )
So this week I taught digital government courses in French. It’s kind of blowing my mind that I can do that.
In unrelated news, I’m fairly sure that somewhere out there a team of French immersion teachers are sensing a disturbance in the force.
This sums up my view of government digital transformation journey. Still early stages... but starting to cross a really interesting threshold from from convergence to standard. New risks & opportunities will really scale. H/T to

For many schools digital government courses are seen as "the future." But it is the present. We need to rethink what we teach and what we think is core knowledge for public leaders. This is an early effort to define that. Much work to do.
Hugely excited to share this project I helped initiate and have spent last few months on. So many great people have been involved and hope more will join.👇
Just completed teaching my Exec Ed course on
#DigitalTransformation
in government. Remote meant more diversity & allowed participants to use lessons at their work during the course with positive results.
Been a tough couple of months so this was amazing.
Just marking one of my favorite assignments. I have students go find IT disasters in their home city/state/country and write a brief synopsis of it. Shows them how widespread and significant this problem is/

Tired. Spent after an amazing three days with digital service leaders from around the world. 90+ participants from 40+ countries. So grateful to panelists & participants for bringing themselves, and sharing with candor & humility. It makes learning & community building possible.
Today is being made much better by a slew of emails from former students talking about how my teaching is helping/impacting their work. Not sure why they've come all a sudden but am grateful. These are literally the best emails one can ever get. Feeling so lucky.
Such a joy reading final papers from my students. We had great options (& some wonderful papers come in):
1. Write a memo for the
@ChicagoCIO
about a the Policy Chief desire to sign an agreement for access to data from Amazon's
@Ring
. What are the risks and opportunities? 1/5
Last week we published a Digital Service Team maturity model.
This week we have a survey to understand where various teams are at. If you work for a government digital service or something similar, please consider filling this out!

Imagine if the government of Canada had been using GCPedia to collaborate on key documents for the past 10 years... so many public servants would be better equipped for the current moment and a lot more remote friendly soft infrastructure would be in place.
I love my students. Such an amazing post here - on so many levels.

2020 was... really not a great year on many fronts. And while I hope to never repeat it, it did reveal many many people - some unexpected - who lifted, carried & supported me. Am so grateful. I hope I'm doing for others what you all did for me. See you in 2021.
It's hard to convey the joy of being able to connect students, former students and others with each other. Being a nexus in a wonderful web of people who care about public service is beyond a privilege. It's just a situation where everyone wins.
Hi everyone - over the past several weeks I've posted work I've done with a global network of faculty on a shared course to teach public leaders about digital.
🥳 VERSION 1 IS NOW FULLY AVAILABLE!!! 🥳
We'll be doing a seminar to help others teach this material. See more below!
The big day has arrived! 🎉
The final parts of our syllabus have been published so we can now say that the FULL TPSDA OPEN ACCESS SYLLABUS IS NOW ONLINE!
Feeling grateful to the many, many people who sent kind words to me regarding my mom and the piece I wrote.

I was invited by the
@IIPP_UCL
for a chat about digital governance increasing state capacity. It was a pleasure to share our story with two pioneers in the digitalization of public services:
@daeaves
&
@MTBracken
. I wish to thank them both and UCL for this great discussion.
An absolute joy and privilege to spend a day with
@swardley
exploring

& how to teach it in policy schools. Exhausted and excited. Looking forward to tomorrow's workshop.
Becoming a lifelong trusted source of career advice to former students and colleagues is one of the single most rewarding parts of being a teacher and manager. Lights up my day.
More exciting news! Each year, with
@PublicDigitalHQ
, we convene digital service teams from around the world. We then co-author lessons & stories. It took a wee bit longer this year but an amazing group of students lead by
@_laurenlombardo
pulled it off.
So proud of my executive ed partners. Our November evaluations for Digital Transformation in Government are among the highest we've ever had, including in person courses. It is possible to create meaningful learning, community and engagement online. 1/?

I'm told Sidewalk Labs chose the name because they wanted to "own" the sidewalk. Imagine starting a company whose goal is to own a public space & public good essential to healthy cities. It's an interesting take on privatization.

Highlight of my day. A former student is the city manager of a city I was visiting. Reached out and we did a walk around town and talked about how they’ve used materials from class to solve problems. And then we talked about new problems! Feeling so lucky.

Covid has exposed the new reality. Most government services are digital services. Why I'm excited to be conducting my "Digital Transformation in Government" exec ed program again - retooled for online. Just a couple of seats left. Info here:
A Deputy Secretary in the US government just shared that: "So much of your course material [from my Exec Ed program] is applicable to and has influenced my perception of the pandemic. "
Has made my day to know that my work is helping support the real work.
This is what leadership looks like. Heads of every major political party sending a vaccination message to the public, together, IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ELECTION. Proud Canadian moment here. (Hope this is a future heritage moment)
Helped my little guy ride a two wheeler for the first time today. The best day. Now boarding a plane for a 4 day trip. Hard to believe I could miss people so much for such a short trip.
Unleashing people to work on things they know little about is fine when the stakes are low or when those on the front lines aren’t overburdened. But the cost of building the wrong thing is high. We don’t want anyone building the equivalent of Aaron Gunn’s terrible medium piece.
Hey

that was fun. Thank you everyone who came to my talk at

Want us to succeed.

Anyone doing interesting data analytics work in the Government of Canada? Particularly using internal data sets? Feel free to DM or email if you can't talk about it.
Was a real privilege to host digital government leaders last summer. Doubly excited that it helped foster some new collaborations - particularly between Estonia and Ukraine.

Been getting a lot of emails from a lot of current and former students this thanksgiving. So grateful they are reaching out. They think they are thanking me, but really I'm so thankful for them.
