🤔 Designers nearly always have strong rational behind work, but if you ask me in the moment why these designs, I might not know right away. My take: Designers do so much with their 👁 and 🧠 — it takes a sec for words to form that capture what we are instinctively aiming for.

9 months ago Ryan and I fell in love with the landscape in Taos, New Mexico and stumbled upon a foundation in the desert. Today, our new adobe home is finished and I can’t wait to invite family, friends, and people who can help pay for it over 😅😊

Working from 🏠 hack: I’ve been trying to work not just from my desk, but from my coffee table, a bench near a window, the kitchen table, etc. The subtle shifts of environment have made it way less isolating and have helped me focus 👨🏻‍💻

I remember when I used to care too much about pleasing design process thought leaders. 🗣 “Before prototyping you have to do a/b/c” Sometimes I start by writing or by prototyping in super high fidelity, and then go back to sketching. You do you, design has no linear process.

It didn’t matter because I care about people, and many that I mentored were not treated with respect like I was—they were beaten down instead of mentored, scared away instead of given honest yet respectful feedback. That scares away everyone who has empathy, and kills a culture.

Today is going to be one of the most difficult experiences of my life, but I’m thankful I made the trip for my mom, my dad, and myself. I’ve also learned recently that, while we all experience pain and loss, we can control to some extent how much we and those around us suffer.

I love my work. My love of design started as a 14 year old, before I knew it could be work. But, that love also is why I have to force myself to take time off, even when my mind doesn’t want to. I usually come back happier, more engaged, and more aware of why I love it.

@dburka @figma @zoink 🙄 ok. Designers reacting to this are likely concerned that a simple, elegant experience may be diluted by a company that struggles to create similarly refined tools. We aren’t all naïve, we just define success differently sometimes. It’s what makes designers valuable.

The hardest part of my mom’s MS was how it stole her personality. The physical stuff sucked, but not being able to connect was 10x worse. Her best friend growing up sent me a 6 letter, reflecting on what a beautiful friend my mom was to her, to help me know my mom a little more.

I used to be kind of proud of how I can harness my fear, insecurity, and anxiety to produce solid work, to avoid feeling like an imposter. But this is a toxic road to stay on—caring too much about impressing others robs you of an independent, authentic, and fulfilling life.

Just heard from my dad that my mom is likely experiencing post-COVID related consequences. She’s not eating, she’s barely awake, and my dad is running out of energy—he loves her so much. Just sharing as a reminder to stay vigilant. So many vulnerable folks are still struggling.

Just gave a 💯 design presentation. I was’t always able to do this—it took work *and* support. A mentor, @mkruz , who we lost to cancer, saw in me what I didn’t—he stoked the fire within. Don’t just focus on natural born speakers, focus on everyone who has something to say.

Another thing I’ve learned the hard way, through mentorship, and therapy: I did well in some pretty toxic environments because my anxiety keeps me fighting/focused on high-performance. …it’s super unhealthy / I’m thankful to be designing for the joy of it, like I did as a kid.

I also connected with my mom for the first time. Her disease, MS, altered her personality. It made her not who she was growing up. But this trip, as she approaches the end of this illness, she heard my voice and lit up and breathed on her own. It was beautiful and I love her.

Before it collapsed, I had a very fruitful career at Twitter, but never did I have the same level of Respect Agency Influence Close ties Recognition That I have @loom . The product is super innovative and that’s a draw, but so are these things to say the least.

The best part of taking time off: Space. Space to resize how much I was supporting others, but not myself. Space to learn that there are no bad days, only bad moments that I can recover from. Space to do nothing, to not be hyper efficient, and to be (mostly) content.

Being always on Slack, quick to respond to notifications, etc does not feel like a healthy long-term relationship with “productivity” tools, but these tools offer little insight into how to use them responsibly. I hope reform here eventually does not rely on proactive customers.

lol someone I interviewed saw an article about me talking about imposter syndrome and asked how I overcame it. My answer: I didn’t 😅 I have become comfortable in situations that previously triggered imposter syndrome, but design is always going to feel a bit intimidating imo.

A small but mighty change I helped ship: Auto titles + summaries for @loom 🚢 Most Looms are not titled/ summarized, so many go unwatched because Slack is noisy. Excited to see us invest wayyy more here to make video messaging more approachable. Great work team 😊🙌🏻

Just picked up a 🍕 to try to relax on a Friday and I can’t believe what I saw. The restaurants are packed inside, no masks. 400,000 🇺🇸 deaths. My own very ill mother tested positive 8 days ago (symptom free so far 🙏🏻). I know we are tired, but please don’t be careless 😔

A bad manager experience: Years ago, I had one who struggled with visual design (one of my superpowers)—they dealt with it by disparaging it as a craft. “tone it down” “focus on substance” Their insecurity held me back until eventually I just pushed harder / went around them.
