Decided to write an open letter on behalf of all English Literature and Creative Writing students to the University of Huddersfield’s VC Bob Cryan today as Geography students did earlier in the week.
Sincerely hope he understands the impacts his spreadsheets have on real people.

Said with the kindest of intentions because I don’t like Starmer either and I’ve voted Green since Corbyn left… It is either Labour or another 5 years of the Tories. We need change.
So Tory MP’s demand the UK average annual salary for three days of work whilst simultaneously blocking things such as free school meals for all children because there’s no ‘magic money tree’, remember? We truly are led by donkeys…

@GoldsmithsUCU
We’re fighting redundancies at the University of Huddersfield. Almost 200 staff are in the firing line. As an English Literature student, I’m facing the possibility of losing my supervisor. So yeah, we’re trying extremely hard to save our lecturers here too!
Protest at University of Huddersfield next week Thursday 23rd May at 10am outside Queensgate campus.
Please join us to show our lecturers we care about them and are doing everything we can to not only save their jobs but also save our education.
It’s worth fighting for.
@GenderReceipts
Can we see the bodycam footage then so we know what was actually said? The word lesbian isn’t immediately homophobic or offensive so what else was said
@WestYorksPolice

I don’t think so, he’s been removed from the Labour Party after 40 years as an MP. Still, it’s Labour’s loss because I’m sure his constituents will stand by him as an independent.
I hope everyone tries their best to attend the protest at the University of Huddersfield next Thursday.
I know people have lives (I do too) but it would be truly great to get as many people involved as possible to support the staff and our education.
@MichaelRosenYes
@GoldsmithsUCU
The government has been dismantling arts& humanities for years and low and behold it’s now totally crumbling. Our uni is transforming into one ginormous STEM facility before our eyes, it’s extremely sad.
Well, I am there delivering my speech in the distance (forgot to ask someone to take pics today so if anyone has any hit me up…)
Met with the deputy VC. Hopefully achieved something.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to show up today. Now going to sleep for a few days.
@MichaelRosenYes
English Lit course at Huddersfield Uni is now down to two lecturers, they have had to cut one of the modules entirely because there’s no one to teach it so students are forced to take the only 3 modules available. I’ve had to transfer to a different uni for third year. Terrible.
Looking for other students at the University of Huddersfield to talk about the effects the cuts are going to have on your education and wellbeing on BBC Radio Leeds.
Please DM me if you’re interested, I’m trying to get as many student voices from across the university involved.
@BBCBreakfast
@BBCNews
Less than 3 people is less than 3 people too many. The law doesn’t matter if you cycle sensibly as most do so why even make an issue out of it?
@PeoplesMomentum
You’re absolutely right, it is a siren call of despair by people who now see Labour as unelectable. They’ve reversed the good Corbyn did and traipsed back to centrist Blairite values. No thank you, not for me, cannot vote for them.
Next week’s protest is backed by unions and the SU. Redundancies may happen every year but never as brutal as this. Please turn up to make a stand: we want to save our lecturers AND the education we pay for!
23rd May, 10am, University of Huddersfield.
@elsie33
I’m a student here and we’re doing our best to fight this. We probably won’t achieve much but my conscience won’t allow me to sit around doing nothing. Our lecturers mean too much to us.
I have a one-track mind at the minute with regards to the dire situation at the University of Huddersfield but I just wanted to reiterate that as students, we will fight for our lecturers because they are more than figures on a spreadsheet to us.
Looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow at the protest at the University of Huddersfield at 10am outside Queensgate campus.
It may rain so please bring a coat/umbrella!
I hope we get a good turnout. See you all there.

I’d like to read this poem at a protest at my uni on Thursday. We’re trying to save 198 staff from redundancy. Michael’s work is the reason I got into literature as a 4 year old& books have always been a constant in my life. Now studying English Lit& trying to save my lecturers.
@SoVeryBritish
I thought secondary school would be as fun as it is in American movies and I genuinely looked forward to being grown up having a locker. My locker got broken into in year 7 and they threw acrylic paint all over my brand new parka jacket.
@OtisWhitton
@womensaid
Wasn’t cleared, ‘main witness withdrew evidence’ so in other words, the victim decided not to go ahead for whatever reason. She had strong evidence against him, he isn’t innocent.
@MichaelRosenYes
Perhaps more concerning is the whip removal from the MP’s who voted against Labour. “Vote for what we want or face expulsion from the party”… how democratic.
For everyone who supported my efforts in fighting the redundancies at the University of Huddersfield in May...
Here is my post collating my thoughts on both this and the future of Arts and Humanities in HE.
As a student at
@HuddersfieldUni
, I would gladly pay far more in tuition fees if it meant the incredible lecturers kept their jobs.
Also, the university doesn’t need a new fancy STEM building. It needs lecturers.
@EHChalus
I’m a student at Huddersfield and we are trying to fight this, our lecturers mean an awful lot to us and we’re going to try our best for them. Terrible situation.
Another amazing afternoon at
@BradfordLitFest
.
Had my fan girl moment meeting the wonderful
@wmarybeard
(one of my academic heroes) and this book is now an extra special addition to my bookcase!
#BradfordLitFest
@SlamDunkMusic
Didn’t eat all day because the queues were 150 people+ per each stall. Way too few food stalls, no way could I be arsed queuing in them. If you’re going to sell that many tickets, you need to provide more food options. Great otherwise but this needs fixing!
No order to my bookcase so don’t judge, I’m not a librarian but thought I’d do a little thread about my research because it’s one of the primary reasons I started the battle at the University of Huddersfield in the first place and it’s important.
@gsoh31
Just wanted to say, I’m a student here and we’re trying our best to fight this. We probably won’t achieve much but my conscience won’t let me do nothing. They mean too much to us all.
So the way free speech works is you can say whatever you like, particularly if it’s against the marginalised within society but you must never ever call Laurence Fox names. If you do, his big scary lawyers will be after you.
@guardian
I’ve emailed you numerous times with a story about the staff cuts at the University of Huddersfield. Just wondered if someone could respond please?
This is why the research is so important to me. I want working class people to have a voice within the arts and not be brushed to one side because their face/voice doesn’t fit.
But it isn’t important to Huddersfield because it isn’t groundbreaking engineering, I guess.
@Wagsstaff
@BBCBreaking
But he’s still 100% guilty. Owning a gun doesn’t mean you have to jump out of bed and murder your girlfriend with it in the middle of the night.
The new STEM building is a ginormous vanity project and I can safely say I would gladly be taught in a wooden shack if it meant our incredibly talented lecturers kept their jobs. We will fight the fight, for them.
Great to see more students at the University of Huddersfield are speaking out.
Still pushing this agenda and I have a meeting with SU next week.
Keen for more student voices to be involved so please reach out to me if your course has been affected.
What a great turnout at the protest at the University of Huddersfield, organised by students to show solidarity with staff who face losing their jobs.
It's time for managers to look at other options, rather than going straight to compulsory redundancies.
Universities should be centres of unadulterated and liberated intellectual thought and speech yet they’re rapidly turning into an Orwellian nightmare. Edinburgh University is a shambles.
@unisonyh
Thank you for sharing this, I do appreciate it. I’ve worked exceptionally hard over the past few days to fight the cuts. Our lecturers are extremely important to us and I want to do anything I can to save their jobs.
Had an excellent afternoon at
@BradfordLitFest
yesterday.
Fantastic lecture on James Baldwin&Maya Angelou by Dr Athea Legal-Miller and Yassmin Abdel-Magied.
It’s plain to see why Bradford deserves city of culture 2025!
Back on Sunday for Mary Beard’s talk.

@BladeoftheS
After tweeting a photo of himself in an Afro style wig and blackface make up, I honestly don’t know how he expects to win this libel case.
The man is clearly sick and needs urgent help.
Half of all abusive tweets aimed at female MP’s target Diane Abbott. Her words were clumsy and historically inaccurate but it’s impossible to claim she doesn’t understand systemic racism.
@DavidPowellHud
@BBCLookNorth
I did meet with Tim Thornton today and I’m hoping we can do something to save some of the staff. They’re all so vital for our education, it’s such a sad situation.
@bbcquestiontime
Nothing to address the major teaching shortage crisis, particularly in secondary schools.
Labour claiming they will hire “6500 new teachers” but no plan on how they will retain them.
What’s the big plan there from either party?
@EHChalus
@RoyalHistSoc
I totally agree. I’m a mature student who did an access course so Russell groups didn’t want me but I’m set to get a first then will do MA and PhD.Couldn’t achieve this without our phenomenal lecturers believing in me,especially the one who published one of my second year papers!
Here's a selection of the incredible faces you'll see this year. 🌟 Don't miss out on our star-studded lineup - check out the full schedule now at 🔗
Which event are you most excited about? 🤩
Utterly humiliating to live in a country where millionaires can treat fellow human beings with such contempt they deem it acceptable to shove them on a barge like low-value goods.
The home office are deplorable, none more so than Suella Braverman &Robert Jenrick.
#BibbyStockholm
Unsure how Lee Anderson is an MP, he just reminds me of every drunk bigoted idiot in a British pub ever. He is quoted as saying he would ‘sail migrants back to Calais and have a standoff so they’d just stop coming’. Was that a serving MP or Lee the racist from The Black Bull?
@premnsikka
@DrBGolding
The reason they reduced the tax threshold in the first place was because high earners don’t need an extra £25 a week towards their child.
The top 1% certainly don’t need it so this policy is utterly nonsensical.
@DrDomWillmott
@HuddersfieldUni
I just want you to know that as a student here, we are going to do our best to fight this. Our lecturers mean too much to us to let this happen to them without a fight. We’ll give it all we’ve got, it’s the least we can do.
And yeah, that’s kinda hurtful. I wanted to prove that this sort of academic research matters too. That literature still matters. That art still matters. For the next generation too, for the kids who can’t do maths but can write poetry. Those kids. It matters. Fin.
@SuellaBraverman
There are no benefits for universities such as Huddersfield. Almost 200 staff are being made redundant, including many valued academics. Explain the benefits there?
