Startups are hard. But robotics startups are the hardest kind because theyโre three companies in one: software, hardware, and the industry youโre actually in.
It goes to follow that robotics startup founders are either extremely delusional or ridiculously competent.

Sadly, no female exec (let alone one of color) in tech/vc could post a mirror selfie like that and expect to be taken seriously afterward.
When they can, it'll be a sign of progress in a weird sort of way.
I hope this follow-up is given as much circulation as the original. All any one of us can do in these situations is to listen, try harder, and hope that our actions over time can demonstrate good faith.

I think he comes off reasonably good in the text. I draw a distinction between the writers, the editors (who write headlines) and the social media folks (who tweet). Theyโre different people with different success metrics.

As someone who read the book,
@PeteButtigieg
has clearly been thinking and talking about these ideas for many, many years. I'm not surprised the physical writing took relatively less time; the book was "pre-written" in his mind! I suspect the only additions were new stats/polls.
One of the most important lessons I learned in my career is that you get a lot more done if you donโt care about who gets the credit.
The challenge is that early in your career it is kind of important to get credit to be promoted in larger organizations.
The biggest secret of influencing people is to make it their idea, not yours.
This appears to take slightly more time than pushing your idea & asking them for their feedback. And it takes a lot more skill with asking great questions. But it creates fantastic buy-in.
Just magic.
โTheyโre going to keep focusing on which books to banโฆ and weโre going to keep focusing on what bridges to build.โ -

As someone who was born in HK and now lives in the US, I would say that it's not something to "feel good about." That said, if forced to choose, I would definitely prefer to be a member of any oppressed group in the US than a Uighur person in China.

It would be incredibly illuminating if you would write a blog post on how the sales-product dynamic (and relative team sizes) should evolve through each stage of growth (e.g. pre-PMF, early traction, growth, etc.).
I dreamed I was in an Office-style workplace comedy with Taika Waititi as a fellow product manager working on robots.

Most of the funding and market cap in a SaaS category goes to the category leader. The best way for founders to lead a category is to define it. Here are my thoughts on how to do that.

The third bullet point seems to be key. One does not need to be in the 1% to live a โgood lifeโ. Perhaps we should spend more effort on redefining โgood lifeโ and desensitizing young people to social media.
Indeed, being born in the USA is already a win in the lottery of life.
Also, I did say some nice things in my tweetstorm! My audience is other roboticists so we all know how much work goes into these things. Growing up in an Asian household, criticism is how you show you care. I tweet because I think there's potential.

You see, when wealthy and influential people like Elon create unrealistic expectations and garner widespread media coverage, the average consumer *is* influenced.
This makes life more difficult for researchers and startup founders who are solving actual problems today.

here is a real, insider discussion on Softbank and their approach to investing:

Funnily enough, I don't mind that as much. I'm pro body positivity with libertarian leanings so my mentality is more, "Glad you're feeling good about yourself. You do you."
My issue is more with the fact that a woman doing the same thing would be treated very differently online.
