Repaying the favor to LA. First day of Harvey was one of the worst days of my life.
I sat and my office and cried the first time I got a call from someone with a Cajun accent I could barely understand talking about boats. I knew my city was saved then.

Lafitte team has made it as far as they can go on; dropping boat in the rest of the way.
Seems minimal assets there currently - flagging up the official chains.
We expect to begin rescues/evacs within 30 min. Will have pics at some point - gives comfort to families.
There are spots in Ian's impact zone that we have tremendous concern about and we are considering the ways we msg that.
Given the high # of retirees, we also have a very high # of family members trying to glean any info they can.
We're trying to be sensitive in our approach.
On a personal note, my 98 year old grandmother was picked up from Houma today by my parents.
Family tried to evacuate her, but couldn't because of traffic.
Not everybody has family who can pick them up, which is exactly one of the reason CSR exists.

Photo of the agencies responding. Glad they were there, thankful they responded.
Yet, low income seniors, still remain in the street overheating.
More resources than you can shake a stick at in LA.
So why is it up to underfunded VOADs and volunteers to solve these problems?
Is it rude to ask multi-billion dollar media companies for a donation when they ask for rights to videos volunteers took?
Asking for a... friend. π
We always just say yes; but, like, y'all know most volunteers pay their own way, supply their own boats/equipment, right?
No major notes in Port Charlotte area, in terms of life safety.
Plenty of debris, no cell, no power. 2 - 4 feet of water, but receding fast.
Biggest thing was some initially pissed off residents that we woke up to let them know their friends & family were worried π.
#Ian

Update: After our tweet, official comes by, saw the scene, said he was going to
@GOHSEP
to "raise hell".
Variety of agencies respond. Say residents will be taken to shelters in buses.
2 hours later... no buses. No responses.
Somebody get this fixed. Raise more hell.
We get it. Really do. Not our first rodeo - disasters are complicated.
But honestly? This is some bullshit. On a lot of different fronts.
Where are the buses? Why weren't they evacuated to begin with?
We currently have generator teams that are going to homes without power to warm elderly Houstonians.
If you have space heaters we can use, please DM.

Civilian SAR teams were able to rescue 1,967 people and perform wellness checks on another 785.
We continue to be in LA to assist relief partners, remove debris, and do shelter transports.

Actually, yeah, straight up, if you have a helicopter and can fly in water bottles - do that. Please.
Texas is in the midst of a humanitarian crisis.
#Texas
#houstonblackout
Re the lists of people in LaPlace.
It's our SOP to go house-by-house in a devastated area.
Having info in tells SAR that someone was inside (so we'll cut a hole in case they're incapacitated).
But we'll hit all houses; most others have similar SOP.
Talked to fellow good samaritan w/ a boat at Lafitte location. His uncle's house was 13 ft off ground, had 1 ft of storm surge inside still.
Positioning trailers and dropping zodiac in the water shortly.
Ride to Lafitte should take ~30min, depending on debris or power lines
Maybe this is the frustration:
There's at least 25 agencies, plans, committees, and TFs, between this nursing home and CSR.
It shouldn't take a random out-of-town volunteer group and this much work/calls to fix it.
EM feels broken sometimes. We can collectively do better.
There will surely be mourning in the days/weeks/yrs to come. Those who didn't make it will live with the rescuer for the rest of their life.
But we'll also have lived to fight another day, having done everything in our power to give others the same chances.
Hang in there.
A donor has approached us and we will be able to cover the family's funeral expenses 100%.
If there are other families needing help with funerals, please have them reach out, and we'll try to help.
Our prayers are with all suffering tonight.π

Be suspicious of any screenshot, be it of a number to call, of a case needing assistance, or of a shark on I-10.
It's likely made the rounds 50,000 times around the internet and is no longer accurate. Especially in regards to that damn shark.
3 years ago, almost to the day, Louisiana came to our rescue. Now it's time to return the favor.
We have asked for an activation from ALL Texas-based teams to LA. ~230 SAR volunteers have arrived so far.
The bond between our two states is deep. We β₯οΈ you LA. We're coming.
People are getting evicted from hotel rooms.
Same offer: if any org / agency reaches out to us with someone who is about to get evicted from a hotel, we'll cover it.
Money should not outweigh safety tonight. An eviction is a death sentence for some.

We can't find hotels room - but if they do, we'll cover it on their behalf.

Five years ago today, CSR was born in a leaky office as a way to help rescue our neighborhood.
It'd soon go on to help rescue 25,000+.
That was unintentional. It only happened because of the overwhelming love and kindness of Houston.
Thank you for an incredible 5 years. β€οΈ
