But first, what led me here.
Universe is looking for a UI Artist to join the product design team. Someone who sees UI design as an artistic medium, not just a method of problem solving. Someone who is obsessed with the delightful possibilities of software.
Excited to share that
@Sequoia
has invested $1.5m into Visual Electric, a new class of design tool powered by AI. We are looking to add a few people to our founding team. If you are passionate about creative tools and AI, we want to meet you. DMs are open.
...annnnd we're live ⚡️
We wrote the first lines of code in January for what would become Visual Electric. After thousands of prototypes I'm *very* excited to share what we created.
⚡️ LAUNCH DAY⚡️
Introducing Visual Electric — the first image generator designed for creatives. Say goodbye to chat and say hello to the generative canvas.
🚀 Universe is hiring a Product Designer to join our design studio. We are pushing the boundaries of what's possible on mobile. We are creating new interfaces that unlock creativity. If this resonates I want to meet you! Say hello at cdunn

But first, what led me here.
We are looking for a full-time brand designer to join
@visualelectric
. This role is unique — you would lead Visual Electric brand, but you would also have a huge impact on product. I'm biased, but I think it's a dream job.
For the last 4 months the team behind
@navigator
has been building something new. Excited to share it with the world today. DM me if you would like to skip the waitlist.
If you are in the market for a high quality brand (for a company, podcast, blog, whatever) but can't afford to hire a brand design studio, send me a DM. I've got something for you⚡️
🧵Here are my top 8 features of Visual Electric
1. Generative canvas — Facilitates the flow of ideas so you can truly spread out and see where the tool takes you.
Very excited to share that I have joined
@onuniverse
to lead the design team. Beyond stoked to work with
@josephcohen
again and the rest of the amazing Universe team.
Today is my last day at
@onuniverse
. When I first spoke to
@Josephcohen
about the role over 2 years ago, he described it as a dream job… and he was right. Leaving is bittersweet, but I’m fulfilling a life long dream of starting a company.
We're looking for someone to lead design at
@onuniverse
. I'm biased, but I think it's a dream job:
Invent breakthrough interfaces, shape a brand that represents a radically better internet, and build a new kind of design studio that lives online. 🌐
Just one week after launch we added 2 new features to
@visualelectric
— Collaging and Moodboards. Both build on the generative canvas and introduce new visual ways of creating with AI.
.
@navigator
design is finally making the switch to
@figmadesign
. So far it has been a joy!
For those who work with shared libraries, how do you organize your components? I'm trying to design a system that scales well & is easy to maintain.
Looking for a freelance graphic designer to help out with a project
@visualelectric
. I’m biased, but I think it’s a dream job. If you’re interested, drop a link to your portfolio below👇
The iPad cursor / adaptive precision is still one of my favorite interaction design patterns from the last few years. Would love to see this brought to the Mac.
Watch me talk about the design thinking and mechanics behind the new pointing system in iPadOS. Then
@malonso
,
@ms_ccwan
, and
@DylanRoss
will show you how to best update the design of your app for the new pointer.
Full video:
@colin_dunn
and
@asallen
asked me how many UX/UI designers there were in the world. I'm not aware of a direct answer to that question but my best estimate is:
780,000 as of 2021.

You will know you have reached the bottom when you look at a solution and you will think “of course”. How could it be any other way? The solution will seem inevitable.
The most successful designs do more than solve a problem, they make people *feel* something. Joy, humor, curiosity, creativity, surprise, delight, connection, freedom. We are looking for someone who designs software that emotes.
Really excited to share Navigator 2.0, entirely redesigned for remote work. This is the best version of Navigator yet. Also, I may or may not be in the launch video🙈
If you’re a graphic designer and want a sneak peek on what I’m working on, I’d love to get your feedback. If you are an engineer interested in this space, I’m looking for a technical partner. DMs are open or email me at hello

I'm conducting an experiment. I'm going to be doing *free* design work for a handful clients. No strings attached. If you're interested in working together, please fill out the form below. If you want to know why l'm doing this, read on...
Why did we make Visual Electric?
Articulating why is tough. It requires untangling the many whys and focusing on the one that matters most. We spent a great deal of time crafting our why with
@hamburger
and I couldn't be happier with how it came out.
Universe is starting to design our first official design system in Figma. Any favorite references out there?
@Joeyabanks
’s excellent work comes to mind.
i've always loved this take which I think is very true and results in the best products
but ironically AI seems to be the opposite of this, where most are starting with the technology and then trying to figure out how to apply and sell it
Universe opens the possibilities of the internet to everyone. The GRID distills the web into simple Lego-like building blocks. With our app, anyone on earth can build a custom website or store in seconds—without code, all from a phone.
Now begins the slow and steady march to “informed simplicity”. Most people stop at some point along this down slope. They get to the point where the work is “good enough”. But all of the truly great work sits at the bottom of this curve.
I joined Aspen nearly three years ago when we were not much more than a mission statement: to empower creative teams to do their best work. After some 200 prototypes we landed on the idea of
@navigator
: the teamwork assistant.
Really excited to launch
@visualelectric_
in the coming weeks. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s possible. All of these images were created today with just a few clicks.
After several months of exploring the AI design idea maze, I’m very excited to have settled on a path. We have shifted into execution mode and are making quick progress.
We are building a GUI for the web so anyone can create a site without writing any code. Doing so requires solving some challenging UI problems. Here are a few that we have been working on!
Today we’re announcing GRIID (GRID II) — our biggest update yet.
We're rolling out 6 new features and product enhancements that bring more power, beauty, and granularity to the GRID. It's a level-up moment for us. Go forth and run amuck.
This week we added Sketching to Visual Electric. This is a really powerful, visual workflow that lets you draw on top of images. Here's a quick video of how it works.
When you first approach a design problem, solutions tend to be simple because they are not yet solving for all of the complexity of the problem. You see a lot of this kind of work on Dribbble. *Uninformed simplicity*
As your understanding of the problem increases, so does the complexity of your solution. Eventually you reach *informed complexity*, where your solution is now addressing all the criteria, but is doing so in a way that reveals the full complexity of the problem.
We are looking to add a founding engineer to the
@visualelectric
team. If you’re interested in working on the future of AI and creative tools, I’d love to meet you. This is an in-person role, located in our Sausalito studio. DMs are open.
Working with
@manualcreative
&
@tomcrabtree
on our brand identity was a dream come true. I’ve been a fan of their work since I was studying graphic design at MICA. Couldn’t be more pleased with how everything turned out.
When someone like Dustin joins the team you know you are doing something right. Welcome to the studio Dustin, can’t wait to see what we build together.
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined the incredible team
@onuniverse
! Here is why I left Apple, chose Universe, and details about my role as Product Design Director:
I'm open-sourcing Wave, a spring-based animation engine for iOS!
Wave makes it easy to build fluid, interruptible animations out-of-the-box.
And if you've been following my recent UI demos, you've already seen it in action: they're all built with Wave!
Who wants some Visual Elec-drip?⚡👕
We are giving away 5 designer hoodies in our brand colors, slate blue & international orange. To enter, share an image, GIF, or video of something you made using the new Sketching tool and tag
@visualelectric
. Winners announced February 13!
Introducing Block Layering. You can now arrange and compose blocks freely on the GRID.
Drag text over images. Collage and add texture. Put a ‘sold out’ sign over a drop. We could keep going, but we’re limited by our imaginations. What you create is going to blow us away.
✨ Stoked to share that
@wavymulder
has joined the team at
@visualelectric_
as 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵. He is responsible the most beautiful and popular models on Hugging Face, including my personal favorite, Analog Diffusion.
Thanks for the shout out

“I’m not the target customer, but I will say, my wife is a graphic designer. She had never used AI tools. I showed her
@visualelectric
and she got hooked on it and paid for it without even telling me she was going to become a paid customer.”
Wow, the response to this was a lot stronger than I expected. If you're interested, please fill out this form. If it's a fit, we'll find some time to chat!

As CEO of
@visualelectric_
, I think of my job as making the machine that makes the machine. Our company is a collection of systems that work together. One of the most important systems is something we refer to as the execution loop.

This is possible not because of some hard-tech breakthrough but because of *great design*. Universe is a new kind of studio—one that lives online and truly invents. We are building a brand that represents a radically better internet. Join us.
Working in Visual Electric just got a whole lot better.
We just dropped a *ton* of new canvas features including guides, constraints, corner radius, image fill, align/distribute, better line tool, nudge, and lots of other little improvements.
We started
@visualelectric
because we believe creative work is one of the best applications for AI. When there is no right answer, hallucinations are a feature, not a bug. Had a great time chatting about this topic with
@AustinCarr
for
@Bloomberg
.
Figma AI looks rather heavily trained on existing apps.
This is a "weather app" using the new Make Designs feature and the results are basically Apple's Weather app (left). Tried three times, same results.

Hot take: I prefer the new Figma drafts model where drafts are organized within a team. It always felt messy to me to have personal drafts mixed with work drafts.

This year I gave a talk at our company offsite inspired by one of my design heroes, Christopher Alexander.
“Most of the wonderful places in the world were not made by architects but by the people.”
Synthesia is looking to hire their first design lead to join its London studio and begin work on an entirely new class of video editor.
It’s a dream job for an ambitious product designer:
You’ll architect the tool that introduces thousands of businesses to synthetic media. 🔮
There are at least 3 things in here that I never thought of doing with VE. Getting a small taste of how incredible it is when users start doing things you hadn’t imagined.

Great design careers are built on successful businesses. Success breeds opportunities for growth. When considering joining a startup, evaluate the business case just as much as the creative opportunity.
We are building the graphic design tool of the future. We believe it will be faster, produce better results, and be more widely used than anything that exists today. If you would like early access, you can sign up here:
