Now that I’ve completed my
@PhillyInquirer
internship and graduated, my run covering Villanova (officially) has ended. If you’ve read or interacted with my work in any way, thank you.
In honor of that conclusion, here are 10 of my favorite moments from the beat over the last 4:
Tyler Kolek, on Kyle Neptune:
"They come out, they announced Kyle Neptune and all their fans were booing. We looked at each other, like 'These fans lost confidence in him? Let's go at 'em. Let's take their confidence.' That adds something to us."
Men’s basketball alums Josh Hart (
@joshhart
), Jalen Brunson (
@jalenbrunson1
) and Saddiq Bey (
@SaddiqBey
) all recognized at halftime of the Villanova-UCLA game.
Drew huge cheers from the Villanova faithful.
Tristen Newton said UConn took motivation from Villanova's previous Big East reign.
"A couple years ago ... they were really running the Big East and they were doing a lot of talking and stuff. And even today, they were out there talking. So I mean, how much did we win by? 24?"
Kyle Neptune gave credit to Chris Arcidiacono for getting Collin O'Toole into the game. Neptune asked Arch if he wanted to finish on the court in his final Finn game, but Arch wanted O'Toole to go into the game in his place.
There is no way anyone can honestly say St John’s, Seton Hall, and Providence aren’t among the 36 best teams in the country. Each extremely, extremely high level basketball teams.
Maddy Siegrist was recognized here at the timeout for become the all-time Big East leading scorer (men and women).
Siegrist is the nation’s leading scorer and led
@novawbb
to the Big East championship game and likely a top-four NCAA seed.
My takeaways from the Awards banquet:
- Seeing Jay Wright in tears introducing both Samuels and Gillespie showed what Villanova's program is built on.
- It seems almost guaranteed that Slater will return, and likely Daniels with him.
(1/2)
Jay Wright and Dwayne Anderson pulled Cam Whitmore to a side room of the Finneran Pavilion at the end of the ceremony.
Potentially repitching the program and Whitmore’s role in it?
Nothing concrete on Collin Gillespie's health. From Jay, it's the same knee that he hurt before, which scares Collin. However, Jay did say that Collin repeatedly said he's good.
UConn coach Dan Hurley, largely unprompted, listed Villanova's resume and statement wins and said not only should it be a NCAA tournament team, but that it has the capability for multiple wins in March.
FINAL: Villanova 71, Providence 60.
Just a huge, huge win for Villanova. Put together arguably its best 10 minutes of the season to start the second half, but the Wildcats were solid all game.
Villanova should be on the right side of the bubble now, but needs more Ws to stay.
Per release, Jalen Brunson (
@jalenbrunson1
) will have his jersey retired by Villanova on February 8th at halftime against DePaul.
Of note: Villanova retires jerseys, not the numbers themselves. Brendan Hausen will continue wearing Brunson's
#1
.
If this was Eric Dixon's last game at Villanova, he said he wouldn't have any regrets.
"I love this place. I love this program. I love my teammates. I've got brothers for life. We played as hard as we could every single night we [went] out there."
In an email, Villanova Athletics announced that Wednesday and Thursday’s NIT and WBIT games will feature the following concessions items for $2:
- domestic beer
- hard seltzer
- soft drinks
- hot dogs
- soft pretzels
- popcorn
Jay Wright was at today’s Villanova practice.
There was a long conversation after practice between him, Kyle Neptune, Justin Moore and Mark Armstrong. Armstrong was then dismissed, leading to another long conversation between Wright, Neptune and Moore.
Cam Whitmore described his time at Villanova as "a struggle, to be honest" but says he's "loving it so far." He admitted it's a little hard coming to Villanova with its sets and its system, and said there's "a lot of stuff I've gotta learn."
Eric Dixon, on getting at least one more game with Villanova's 4 grads:
"It's special to me. They came here and gave up themselves, some for 5 years, some for 10 months, but they all came here and gave up something of themselves. For me, I'm happy and honored to play with them."
Extremely proud to announce I won the APSE’s 2024 Student Contest! Thank you to
@APSE_sportmedia
,
@LAT_Iliana
and the judges for the recognition and to Villanova,
@phillysport
and
@AJCsports
for all I’ve learned. Congratulations to all the honorees!
2024 Villanova commit Matthew Hodge (
@Matthew03333530
) and his brother, 2026 'Nova target Jayden Hodge (
@Jaydenhodge33
) are seated behind the 'Nova bench for today's game. With them is their high school coach Brian Lynch, a 'Nova alum.
I'm sure they're enjoying this one.
I’ve seen a lot of comments about Villanova’s decision to accept the bid + other stuff, so here’s what I think (🧵):
- 100% agree w accepting the bid. Only reason not to is pride, no reason not to give Daniels & Slater more games + more PT for young guys (Armstrong, Hausen, etc)
Justin Moore called his first performance back "impressive".
"I think being able to hold my own out there... and being able to play that many minutes coming off an Achilles injury, not many people could do that. So I'm really proud of myself" - Moore
Got off the phone with Kyle Neptune. He said Villanova never considered declining the NIT bid and that no players have told him they do not want to play in the event.
Neptune also said several players are day-to-day with injuries. He declined to say which players.
Tyler Burton described his Villanova teammates as his "best friends for life" after the Marquette game. He's excited for the NIT, describing getting another run with them as "a blessing."
Full quote:
TJ Bamba said postgame that yesterday was the first time his grandma was ever been able to see him play.
Bamba, a Bronx native, moved to Colorado for high school and played his first three seasons at Washington State.
“That was big to me. It’s been a blessing.”
Kyle Neptune, on no one from Villanova opting out of the NIT:
"I think it just shows the incredible character of our guys. We've committed to this season. Villanova's playing, and I think it say a lot about our guys that they've chosen to come out and compete for Villanova."
For my senior column, I wrote about the dingy basement where I’ve spent most of the last 4 years.
@TheVillanovan
has been everything I wanted Villanova to be. I am so lucky I found it and so grateful for the people I’ve met.
On my last late night in Corr:
Justin Moore didn't get the storybook ending he deserved. Moore, who started 118 games at Villanova, finished with 2 points (1-7 FG), 6 rebounds, and a team-worst -21 in 26 minutes.
Brutal, brutal end for someone who should go down as a program legend.
Chris Arcidiacono, on if he'd want to accept an NIT bid:
"Anytime you get a chance to put on that Villanova jersey, you've got to play with it and play with pride. I don't want to pass up any opportunities to do that."
Bang. Theres the news Villanova has been waiting (and desperately hoping) for.
Graduate forward Eric Dixon will return to Villanova for a sixth season (including his redshirt year). Instantly makes the Wildcats a solid Big East team.
Sources: Eric Dixon is withdrawing from the 2024 NBA Draft and will return to Villanova.
Averaged 16.6 PPG and 6.5 RPG last season.
Will be one of the best players in the Big East in 2024-25.
Marquette’s Justin Lewis, St John’s Julian Champagnie and Villanova’s Collin Gillespie all go undrafted.
Just one Big East player gets selected.
Very very disappointing night for one of the top basketball leagues in the country.
Mikal Bridges talked pregame about how detail-oriented Villanova made him. He said he feels Villanova is the most detailed program, and he believes it shows even in the NBA.
“I know how Jalen (Brunson), Josh (Hart) and everybody is. It’s strictly because we went to ‘Nova.”
In the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals, Villanova beat No. 14 North Carolina, 83-81, in the first meeting between the two programs since the 2016 title game.
Hubert Davis's analysis was simple:
“At the end of the day, Eric Dixon kicked our tail.”
Recap:
Last year's Villanova roster:
Graduated - Justin Moore, Tyler Burton, Hakim Hart, Chris Arcidiacono
Making pro game decisions - Eric Dixon, Mark Armstrong, TJ Bamba
Portalling - Brendan Hausen, Lance Ware, Trey Patterson
Still around - Jordan Longino, Nnanna Njoku
After Jay Wright's retirement, Brendan Hausen (
@HausenBrendan
) has a major decision to make about his future.
Hausen will visit campus on Monday to “see what it’s about.”
A year after laser eye surgery, Eddie Rosario is seeing the ball better than ever. He’s homered in four straight games, MLB’s longest active streak.
Braves teammates, fans and Brian Snitker can see it: the 2021 Eddie Rosario is back.

OFFICIAL: Villanova accepts an NIT bid and receives a 1 seed. It will host VCU (22-13) in the first round on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
The season isn't over yet.
FINAL in OT: Villanova 68, No. 12 Creighton 66.
Fantastic performance by the Wildcats, with strong defense against an elite offensive teams. Villanova made Creighton play at its pace, and the Wildcats adjusted at halftime to overcome a 14 pt deficit. Eric Dixon had 32.
Wow.
Justin Moore said the common theme of Villanova struggling over the final 5 min has been the other teams raising their intensity, while Villanova hasn’t matched it.
Villanova has made a total of 4 field goals in the final 5 min against Providence, Marquette and Creighton.
Villanova, Seton Hall, and Providence all believe they will make the tournament if they finish 2-1.
Remaining schedules:
- Villanova: @ Prov, @ Seton Hall, vs Creighton
- Prov: vs Villanova, @ Georgetown, vs UConn
- Seton Hall: @ UConn, vs Villanova, vs DePaul
Welcome to March.
✏️ Some long overdue personal news…
I’m extremely excited to share I’ll be interning this summer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (
@ajc
)! I’ll be writing for
@AJCsports
, covering all things ATL athletics, and I can’t wait to head south.
Georgia, see you soon!
CAM WHITMORE UPDATE:
Whitmore’s still considered day-to-day and a game day decision, per Kyle Neptune. Whitmore was shooting with a taped hand during open practice, but has not been a full participant.
He COULD play tomorrow, but Neptune said he had the same status last week.
"Eric Dixon, it's not like he's a great athlete. He got ten rebounds. The other kid, Burton, he played four years at Richmond." - UCLA coach Mick Cronin, on his team being outrebounded by Villanova
Kyle Neptune smiled when he heard it would be $2 Beer Night at the Finn tomorrow.
"I'm hoping it gives them extra incentive to be as loud as they possibly can."
Mikal Bridges was just honored at midcourt in a halftime jersey retirement ceremony.
In his speech, Bridges was in a celebratory mood — both for the honor, and for the current score.
"I'm happy we up 24. Shoutout my man Coach Neptune, we gon' get it done today."
Ed Cooley, on Villanova's shotmaking:
“Everything is good when you're making shots. You feel better. You look better. You dress better. You talk better. You move better. The food is good. You're good looking. When the ball is not going in? Yeah, you look like Georgetown today."
🧶: Blue-White game takeaways:
- Stating the obvious, but this is a better Villanova team than last year. Healthier, more talent, better ball movement, better shooting.
- Shooting: Brendan Hausen stood out. That’s never been an issue for him, but it was still eye-catching. (1/4)
🚨BREAKING: TJ Bamba will transfer to Villanova
He averaged 15.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists at Washington State last year
Bamba was No. 8 on
@TheAthletic
best available transfer list
Former Braves pitcher Touki Toussaint made his Truist Park return tonight and impressed, pitching 5.1 innings and holding the Braves to one run.
He said pitching in the opposing uniform was different, but his return still felt special.

Villanova’s season started with excitement, an AP ranking, & NCAA Tournament expectations.
It ends in the NIT with apathy, “Fire Neptune” screams, & 1000s of empty seats.
On a program that didn’t expect to be here & a fan base that didn’t want to be:
Key to Villanova’s MBB recruiting efforts, both HS and the portal, is NIL.
@jensenoffcampus
did a deep dive on Villanova’s NIL situation, finding that
@friendsofnova
pays the men’s team roughly $3m / year. Scholarship players receive at least $75k. More:
Sunday concluded my 2 years as co-EIC of
@TheVillanovan
. It’s been an honor to lead my student paper & I’m so proud of all we accomplished.
I’ll save my sappy thank you for a senior column, but this paper will always mean everything to me. Can’t wait to see all the next EICs do!
La Salle transfer Jhamir Brickus announces his commitment to Villanova on his Instagram. Brickus, a 5-11 guard, has one year of eligibility remaining.
Villanova is now down to three open scholarship spots.
Final note from today:
Jay Wright was at practice today, and when practice ended and media came in, each player was in a line greeting the former coach.
Wright's TV debut is less than a week away, next Wednesday for Villanova - Penn. And no, Wright was not wearing a suit.
BREAKING: Villanova is unseeded in the NIT and will face Liberty on the road in the first round.
The Wildcats’ region includes Oregon, Florida and Wisconsin. Tip-off is Tuesday at 9 pm.
Another big one for Villanova, nabbing Miami wing (and Philly local) Wooga Poplar. Much needed, though Villanova needs a lot from him.
Wildcats still need another guard, but this is a big step for the 2024-2025 roster.
(Told you I’d still do some tweeting.)
Wooga Poplar has committed to Villanova. It's a big get for the Wildcats, who still need another guard but have a guy who can play at both ends.
Story:
Hakim Hart picks Villanova out of the transfer portal.
Hart, a 6-foot-8 guard, played four years at Maryland. As a senior, he started all 35 games for the Terps. The Philly native gives the Wildcats much needed size.
My

Since you liked the last one, here's Villanova's 2024-25 scholarships:
- Jordan Longino
- Nnanna Njoku
- Jordann Dumont
- Matt Hodge
- Josiah Moseley
- Malcolm Thomas
Maybes:
- Mark Armstrong
- TJ Bamba
- Eric Dixon
+ Four (or more) transfers
I asked Justin Moore what he learned from Villanova’s scrimmages against Penn State and Duke.
“We’re really talented, but there’s another level we can get to.”
Two different Villanova reactions to this Creighton-UConn scoreline:
- If it holds, Villanova’s win at Creighton becomes even more impressive
- If it holds, the Wildcats will face a very, very motivated Huskies side Saturday
Chris Arcidiacono said last night’s DePaul game reminded him of playing St John’s in the Big East Tournament in 2022. Villanova won, 66-65, on two late Brandon Slater free throws after trailing by 17 in the second half.
Walk-on Collin O'Toole is in for the final 42 seconds, drawing easily the loudest cheers of the second half.
Happy birthday, Collin, even as he held the ball for a shot clock violation.
Shaka Smart said Villanova is "a team that can beat anyone in the country."
He said that Villanova has played "a heck of a schedule" and described it as "a championship program w/ guys that have a lot of pride." He complimented Nova's toughness, saying "They have a good team."
Matthew Hodge and Josiah Moseley, welcome to college. Your first assignment? Try stopping a 6-8, 255 pound grown man who's been at Villanova since you were 13.
Corner three from Eric Dixon should be a dagger. Jay Wright heads for the exit.
Villanova now leads, 72-62, and barring a last minute collapse, will earn a crucial win for its NCAA tournament hopes. 61 seconds to go.
Yesterday, I talked to TJ Bamba about fanbase negativity amidst a five-game losing streak, including pregame boos for Kyle Neptune.
“We don’t respect that. … What type of fans are y’all if y’all doing that?”
So on one hand… that’s not a game Villanova technically had to win. Beating Xavier in Cincy is hard.
But to lose off layups? Then to not even get a final shot off? Completely unacceptable.
I'm no bracketologist, but like many others on this app I think Villanova needs to go 6-3 plus a Big East Tournament win to make the NCAA tournament. That would put Villanova at 19-14, which with its non-conference wins, should be enough.
Here's how I'd sort the remaining games:
Finally, the always-competitive Brandon Slater (
@jbrandonslater
) has been challenging Brendan Hausen (
@HausenBrendan
) to three-point shooting competitions.
Per Slater, the contests are often best of 100 threes. On average, Hausen makes 93/100, while Slater's around 82.
BREAKING: Hakim Hart commits to Villanova.
The Maryland senior started 35 games for the Terps last season, averaging 11.4 points and 4.1 rebounds. Hart, a Philly native, chose Villanova over a final four of Gonzaga, Miami, and Kansas.
No. 10 Villanova beat No. 7 Delaware, 35-7, to clinch a share of the CAA title and an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs.
Somehow, the Wildcats were playing for more.
"We do it for the people before us. We do it for the ‘V’ on our chest. It’s tradition.”
Chris Arcidiacono, on Collin O'Toole:
"Collin's the epitome of Villanova basketball. He does everything the right way. Any other walk on in the country probably would have shot that three in the corner, but he gave the extra pass to me. That's just the type of guy he is."
Villanova had its second-fewest three point attempts this season in its win over DePaul, attempting just 20. (The lowest was 18 in the Maryland win, though that featured by far the fewest shots in a game this season.)
Villanova is 6-0 when it attempts less than 25 threes.
OFFICIAL: Hakim Hart is withdrawing from the draft and heading to the Main Line.
With that, Villanova’s 2023-2024 roster is set. Hart’s decision wraps up a perfect offseason for Kyle Neptune and Co.
I talked to Hakim Hart (
@keem___3
) about his decision to transfer to Villanova. Hart feels he fits well on Villanova's roster, but he's most excited about the opportunity to play in front of his family.
My

story, updated with quotes:
Some more Villanova NIT info from availability today:
Kyle Neptune said they never consider turning down the NIT, and there was no decision to be made. Villanova was going to play assuming it got a bid.
Last year's Villanova roster (Updated):
Graduated - Justin Moore, Tyler Burton, Hakim Hart, Chris Arch
Declared for draft - Eric Dixon, Mark Armstrong
Portalling - TJ Bamba, Brendan Hausen, Lance Ware, Trey Patterson
Still around - Jordan Longino, Jordann Dumont, Nnanna Njoku
Eric Dixon didn’t score tonight. Kyle Neptune praised his selflessness:
“For him to share the ball like that, knowing that he hasn't scored, as an older guy, is pretty remarkable. That's what it takes to be a good team and that's kind of what we're about now. Hats off to him.”
Eric Dixon cocked his eyebrow when I asked him if he was playing tomorrow night.
"For us, we had another game to play. We're gonna go and play it."
He added that he's not worried about injuries, etc. ahead of the offseason.
Greg McDermott praised Kyle Neptune postgame for Neptune’s ability to navigate so many injuries this year. He said it’d be extremely difficult for a seasoned coach, so what Neptune has done in his first year at Villanova is “unbelievable.”
Like Eric Dixon, Tyler Burton didn't consider opting out of the NIT:
"We took the NIT bid, so it's our job to come out here and play as hard as we can and try to get this next win and you know, keep going and keep going and keep going."
Asked Kyle Neptune about North Carolina turning down its NIT bid:
“I don't have any reaction. I don't know what's going on with them. I’m focused on Villanova and what we got to do for our program.”
Eric Dixon, on UConn:
"That's a good program and their guys are bought in. In a league like this, whoever has the most bought-in guys, for whatever reason, they're probably going to win most of their games."
Five Big East teams playing in the NIT is awesome. Villanova and Seton Hall receive one seeds, Providence is a three, Butler is a four, and Xavier is unseeded but in.
All Big East teams but St John's (declined bid) and Georgetown and DePaul (bad) will play in the postseason.
