After having a rough go last year staying really consistent with some new habits I was trying to integrate,
@JamesClear
's advice of not missing 2 days in a row has made a huge difference for me. I'm currently on a 65 day streak which ties my longest from last year
We deployed the Rails World Conference app to a $14 Digital Ocean droplet and it was written by 2 early career developers.
I’ll think you’ll be fine rolling out stuff from the 37Signals crew 🤣.
We're all on the same page that running a sophisticated piece of business critical software with a database, exposure to the internet and stuff costs more than renting a single computer, right?
About a year ago, I had a basic version of SpotSquid ready to go using mostly React on the front end.
After
#Rails
7 was released, I decided to pivot and go all in on Rails + Hotwire and start over. After getting the hang of things, it really feels like I have superpowers
When searching routes added by gems or engines, I'm usually not sure what I'm looking for. Combining the rails routes task with FZF gives you a fuzzy finder for routes in your terminal.
Here's the alias I use in my bash profile and a quick demo of what it looks like.
I've always been a hands-on learner and love to be able to leverage what's available in the Rails console.
I put together a detailed post with some of my most useful tips and tricks for the Rails console.
Fellow
#rails
peeps. I'll be conducting some interviews for senior rails devs in the new year and have a lot of leeway in the process.
My main rule is 'No Trivia' but I'd love to hear about some of people's best and worst interview experiences.
RTs appreciated!
I've had the this weird idea to rent out an entire ranch in the mountains of Colorado to host a small ruby conference / retreat.
If that sounds like something you'd like to see, please share and join the email list for updates! 🤠
It’s been amazing meeting so many people in person at
#RailsWorld
. Can’t believe the last day is almost over.
I’d love to meet everyone I can so come and say hello
So many cold DMs asking me if I'd like to be featured in Forbes.
Listen, if I'm going to be featured in Forbes, I'm going to do it on my own the old fashioned way...
By committing fraud and financial crimes.
Using Concerns in Rails is a topic that's came up in a few of my sessions with
@agencyoflearn
developers.
I put together some of my thoughts on the what, why and how for using Concerns.
I'm happy to announce I've been working on a course for all things Action Mailbox
Action Mailbox Pro
Starting today, you can join the wait list for more information and updates!
Just got my
@railsconf
headshots back and for the last one, asked the photographer to pose me like I'm taking an awkward senior photo for the yearbook and they nailed it 🤣
Excited to announce I’m now offering paid mentoring and career coaching!
By offering paid services I’ll be able to tailor guidance to the individual and spend more time than the occasional question or bug fix.
It's been a wild couple of months.
Happy to announce I'm now working as an independent Rails consultant! I'm really looking forward to some new challenges and spending more time on
@SpotSquid
Wrote a fun post on luck that goes into some more detail
Mentorship is a two-way street. Working with newer developers reminds me of so much stuff that's been tucked away in my brain that I haven't thought about in years.
Today we were talking about Rack and remembered there's a rake task that lists the order of your middleware 💡
2 hours of white knuckle driving but I’m home safe. 😆 just barely made it up my driveway after a couple of tries. Here’s a frame from a video I look pulling into my driveway. Just look at all that snow packed in my wheel. Looks like I’m staying put for a while.
Working with early career Rails developers almost daily has been such a boost for my motivation and energy. I wanted to put together and share some of advice I have to help newer developers start to level up
I've really been enjoying working with Action Mailbox lately and put together an in depth look at Action Mailbox and how you can use it for your inbound emails.
I started working on this post about a month ago and wasn't sure if I'd publish it or not.
It's been a long road and a lot of work leading up to my first conference talk and decided I had to talk about how I got there and what went into it.
@gxespino
I think this is related to some of the changes from Ruby 3.
adding `IRB.conf[:ECHO_ON_ASSIGNMENT] = true` to your .irbrc file or setting that value manually in the Rails console should get those objects expanding by default.
So many great things to say about yesterday but really happy I had the unique
@railsconf
experience where an author of one of the gems from the code examples is in the audience. Thanks for HTTParty
@jnunemaker
, couldn’t think of a better way to start a truck via email!
End of an era for spring. You served us well for a while, good friend. But progress waits for no complication. The spoils of faster silicon should be simpler stacks. (This is already the default for new Rails apps!).
Friends, I need some help. If I reach out and ask if you'd like to see this cool thing I just finished for my talk, please just tell me "No thanks".
I'm trying to keep things a surprise but ya boy is excited and has low self-control.
Kicking off my journey to
#RailsWorld
today! Hanging out in the lounge trying not to think about how the next time I get to step outside, it'll be on a different day and on a different continent. 😅
I was able to deploy a working Rails app via
@hatchboxio
in the time it takes to not watch a single episode of The Office playing in the background.
I literally did it with one hand. The other wasn't tied behind my back, it was shoveling Cheezits into my mouth
#noshame
Found this relic while cleaning out some stuff this weekend.
Almost exactly 10 years ago, I booked 30 days at a hacker house on AirBnB, bought myself a one way ticket, and left Philly to head to a coding bootcamp in Mountain View. Can't believe it's been so long
I’ve been playing around with branded QR codes in SpotSquid and really enjoyed getting it working.
Just published a new post and in depth video for building a rails app to create custom QR codes
Today is a pretty cool day in my mentorship journey.
Exactly 1 year ago, I had my first call with
@ItsKentastic
through the
@firstrubyfriend
program and today our podcast episode talking about building the Rails World app has just been released.
🎙️
@rails
World needed a website! Did you want to be on the small team that helps build it?
@shami941
and
@elhalvers
certainly did and so they came on to the show to talk about their experience backed by Daniel Rassiner and
@cnorm35
.
I've started working on some videos to get more comfortable recording while finalizing the content for my Action Mailbox course.
Today, I'm publishing my first one, a video version of my Rails & Tailwind Dark Mode Post.
I've been working with
@jumpstartrails
apps for a couple of years now and see some people run into issues keeping things updated after a long break.
I just published some details on how I keep things updated and pull in upstream changes.
Doing some set up on a production server about to go live and needed to confirm email was working correctly.
This is a super handy snippet to send out a quick email to confirm everything is set up correctly. It's nice not having to set any values or use the mailer views.
In the summer of 2014, I did a coding bootcamp and the first couple of months at an internship on an 11” MacBook Air with a 60gb HD.
Excited to get my first Air in over a decade 😻
Back at it after a couple of weeks off to recharge.
Instead of flexing an unbroken chain of commits, I'm happy I'm able to have a couple of weeks with little to no commits.
Ready to hit the ground running in 2024
Episode 31 is saddled up! 🐴 Cody Norman (
@cnorm35
) joins us to share about Rails consulting, mentorship,
@SpotSquid
, Rawhide Ruby, and his RailsConf talk on Action Mailbox (soon to be a course!) Thanks again for joining us, Cody! 🙌
I've been cranking away at some really fun stuff to include in my
@railsconf
talk. So much, that I'll probably have a whole blog post or video covering all the stuff I wasn't able to get working.
Come see what I've been up to Thursday @ 11:00!
I've been working on a post detailing deploying Rails apps on Render with their blueprint. After using Render for a couple of weeks I think that post can be shorted to:
Just use

My jeans are darker and beard is grayer but couldn't be happier to be speaking at
@phillyrb
again.
@phillyrb
is the first meetup I ever spoke at and also the most recent one.
Can't wait to see you all tonight!
At tonight's meetup
@cnorm35
will be giving a preview of his RailsConf talk "Attraction Mailbox - Why I Love Action Mailbox" Come join us at 8pm (EST) tonight! RSVP here:
I've been working on a few different things the past year and have been having some trouble articulating 'what I do'.
Instead of trying to box myself into one thing, I've started channeling my inner Purple Cow for a new stage of my life and career.

Seeing some snow this morning and it's hard to believe 2 weeks ago I was hanging out in the Caribbean with my wife for a friends wedding.
I made a sincere effort to find the goofiest hat and shirts possible.
The Rails Foundation is delighted to announce a fun partnership with the
@agencyoflearn
. Under the Agency's close mentorship, a team of junior developers will create an event schedule app for
#RailsWorld

What a year. So glad I had a chance to meet my

@adrianthedev
as well as a ton of other great people.
Can’t wait to see what 2024 holds!

A couple of weeks ago, I created a poll with some topics about future blog posts.
Action Mailbox barely edged out Beard Grooming Tips.
I've already posted my Beard Grooming Tips article and today I have a double header of Action Mailbox posts.
Sent out the first update for this morning.
It's nice thinking about being outside during the summer especially with having to stat shoveling myself out today.
The battery life on this M2 Air is nuts. Installed multiple versions of Ruby, cloned and set up some repos, configured and installed my preferred setup and barely made a dent in the battery.
Sorcery 🧙♂️🪄
It was pretty early in my career, but I remember how excited everyone was with the release of Rails 4.
Getting a lot of the same vibes with the release of Rails 7, pretty exciting
Anxiously awaiting the point where my credit card company starts flagging my charges as suspicious thinking
“How many times can someone go to Juicy Kebab in a week?”
If you were to tell me when I was in college I'd be speaking at a software conference sponsored by
@weedmaps
(after some explaining to past me what weedmaps is of course), I think my head would explode.
Whoo hoo! We're excited to welcome
@weedmaps
as a
#RailsConf
sponsor! 🥳🕺

I still remember going to WaWa not long after moving to Philly and my manager asking me to get a jug of green tea, “one of those big jawns”…
🤣 called him from the store asking where the big jawns were at (I thought that was the brand name) and never heard the end of it
Re-reading The Mom Test to get ready for some big customer convos next week and I forgot how this book is packed with so many great lines.
Here's a great one from today...

I just published a new post on my experience with the regional radness of

and some info on my travel setups for conferences and work.
Thanks again for hosting

and

#RailsWorld
is now sold out. We can't wait to welcome you to Toronto! If there are any unclaimed or returned tickets from sponsors, we will release a second, smaller batch later in the year.
Really excited to be a guide at
@rubyconf
this year. I've been working mostly solo the past couple of years and really looking forward to dipping my toes into the mentorship waters again
Watching the storm roll in over the flatirons before
@boulderruby
in about an hour. Hoping for easy travel home. St some point tonight, they’re estimating 3 inches of snow per hour 🥶
Putting the finishing touches on an article for tips and tricks for the Rails console.
One of my favorite tips:
If you have to use a Rails console in production, you can start it with the --noautocomplete option to not have autocomplete lagging on the server.
Welp, Rails World early bird tickets sold out in less than 60 seconds. General admission tickets are available now, and I got one. I'm going to Rails World! ✈️
