I’m struck by the # of emails I get from prestigious academic surgeons telling me how great the IMG in their lab is & encouraging me to look at their application. Here’s an idea…they worked in YOUR lab. YOU are the Sr. author. Do the right thing & offer a spot in YOUR program.

When I was a boy I had a friend who’s father was a surgeon. When he’d drive us places he was often silent…deep in thought. Often thought he wasn’t friendly…but in retrospect suspect he was just worried. I have a lot more empathy looking back.

While my legs are starting to swell I’ve never had pneumonia nor have heard any of my colleagues getting pneumonia. Please...it’s ridiculous...just wear it

@malkeasaad I think you are making my point. If the PI works at an institution that is not open to IMGs the PI should question whether they should use IMGs in their lab. If the lab is a pathway to residency you should have a track record…starting with your own institution.

Recently a colleague lamented her patient after a colon resection spiked. I sighed since I had the same scenario. Now both of us 😥 as we wait for a CT. Made me wonder on a given day how many surgeons who do colorectal are anxiously awaiting scans? Sometimes surgery is stressful

Pro tip for #MatchDay2021 Minimally invasive surgery is important to master. But to be a complete surgeon you must be comfortable open as well. In these days open surgery usually difficult/complex. A well trained surgeon needs multiple skills and must be able to adapt. My 2 cents

There has been a lot of tweets about not matching, the match, problems with SOAP etc...but the fundamental problem remains the 30% increase in med students and no change in residency spots. Until this is addressed we will have this problem...every year

Medical school enrollments grow, but residency slots haven’t kept pace | AAMC

The AAMC’s annual survey shows student body growth won’t alleviate physician shortage unless residency and clinical training site shortfalls also are addressed.

We completely changed resident call. 6 day chunks with 3 rotating teams using 1/3rd of residents with on-call, post-call and swing team. 2/3rd at home isolated. Every 6 days we rotate. No one in clinic. Virtual conferences. Trying to stay healthy. What are you doing to prepare?

Just started a new phase of my life!!! Haven’t been to a wedding in 20 years. Went to my first wedding of my close friends children. Also hadn’t dressed up in a year. Here it goes…time to enjoy!!

@DissanaikeMD Peter Burk, currently @BMCSurgery , taught me this years ago. “This is no longer about how your loved one will live but about how s/he will pass. Let’s talk about how that should be”...he would say. I stole this line. Takes the responsibility and guilt away from the family.

@globalsurgallie @fleming_ii 💯!! Your job is to save the patient & any distractions, not helpful. You have 1 objective! Stay focused. As your PD that is my expectation. If the system is broken for the police then fix it. Rules of evidence should not impact patient care. Everyone out! Let me do their job!!

My daughter is off to her last semester of college. Has her first job all lined up. Much better than me!!! But it occurs to me this was the last month we will likely share a roof….it’s funny how “doing it right” doesn’t always “feel good”….😢😢
