As a bi person, I'm used to being accused of just not being able to make up my mind.
That's why this Pride month, I'm partnering with wave-particle duality...
If you witness this happening in a meeting, the best way I've found to call it out is to say, "Thank you, I'm so glad you agree with [my / original person's] recommendation."
Do you see the small difference in headlines. Why didn’t
@JohnBoyega
headline state he wins praise before focusing on the negative. The difference in reporting are the small things that lead to the big things!

We thought it had been a while since we last treated you with a picture of the Large Hadron Collider! Did you know that scientists have to account for the phases of the Moon when adjusting the particle beam? 🌙
Find out how:
I really appreciate getting messages like these and they are most of the reason I am on Twitter to talk about my work. The second part of the message quoted makes me sad though. I'm also not naturally good at science and maths. I don't think anyone is. [1/10]
I was fortunate to meet Peter Higgs in 2013 (days after the Nobel prize announcement). He was modest as he told a group of PhD students the history of the boson theory. Afterwards, I was very lucky to get my copy of the New York Times with the discovery signed by him.
I'm very happy to be able to share that in September I will start as an Assistant Professor at
@IoP_UvA
and with
@_nikhef
, still working on the
@ATLASexperiment
at
@CERN
!! 🥳
I'm really excited for this next chapter & I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the years.
@MatthewHanchard
Please tell her I said hi! I'd happily have a chat with her on Skype if that's something you were comfortable with (but of course no pressure). Or I can send a video explaining what I do :).
Happy

everyone! 🏳️🌈 Today is a day to recognise and celebrate the achievements of LGBTQ+ people in science, technology engineering and maths, and I am proud to stand among this wonderful group of people!

It did give me a good opportunity to explain that scientists don't remember every fact all the time. Instead we learn where to find the information we need, how to evaluate it and then how to apply it appropriately.

Sharing someone's idea with the correct attribution (in this case a retweet where people can see who wrote it) is the right way to do it. The bad way would be to copy and paste as though you wrote it yourself. Amplification is good, stealing isn't ☺️
Whenever I give a tour at CERN and someone says, "this is probably a silly question" I always know that's going to be one of the toughest physics questions, but also one of my favourites of the day. Visitors always keep me on my toes! Keep asking the "silly" questions 😊
I'm definitely not thrilled that this is going to be my most popular tweet ever. Says a lot about the frustrations of women in science that it's resonating so much.
Hello Men In Science! Thought for the day: what are you doing to support
#WomenInSTEM
today and every day?
Replies are turned off because this is homework 😊
The father of nuclear chemistry Otto Hahn and physicist Lise Meitner discovered nuclear fission.
Hahn was awarded the 1944
#NobelPrize
in Chemistry "for his discovery of the fission of heavy nuclei" but Meitner was never awarded the prize despite receiving 46 nominations.
I actually wrote that I am very passionate about science communication, so please at least finish reading the sentence before you send me your misogynistic hate, 'Passionate Logical Guy' 😒
Hi physicists!
I'm preparing a slide to show first year undergrads a diverse look at working physicists. As usual all top photos are basically Einstein/Newton, or if I search scientist I get chemists...
If you're happy for your photo to be used, can you post it below? THANKS!
Today I got to go inside ProtoDUNE!!
I've wanted to visit this detector for years and I was so excited to hear that the liquid argon had been removed for a while. Thanks
@Claire_Lee
for the tour!! So fantastic to learn more about this experiment 😊
I'm very happy to announce that from Monday I will be starting a Radboud Excellence Initiative Fellowship in Nijmegen in The Netherlands!
I'll be there for two years looking for Dark Matter with the
@ATLASexperiment
and developing Machine Learning.

Look at this cloud chamber!!!
Here you can see a radioactive source in the centre of a cloud chamber. Charged particles pass through the saturated gas, knocking electrons out of the atoms & creating ions. This then leads to tiny droplets forming, resulting in the trails of mist.
Did you know that Black candidates for physics post-docs in the US are likely to be ranked lower (for an IDENTICAL CV) than a White candidate. Women are also ranked lower, which means Black women are hit double.

Still thinking about the TikTok Live I did over the weekend where someone told me I can't be a very good scientist if I can't remember every element in the periodic table 😄 (someone was very keen to ask about "element 115")
I am one of those
#scientistswhoselfie
. I do it because I hope it shows a more personal side to my research and I want to share my enthusiasm. It's not for everyone and that's OK. We shouldn't shame people for doing
#scicomm
differently.
Congratulations to UCLA professor Andrea Ghez, winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics, for her pioneering research on the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole.

It's my birthday! 🎉🎉
I'm working all day today 😅 but I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all of your support ☺️
Please have some of your favourite food or pet a furry friend for me ☺️

I've been doing video meetings for over ten years, so consider myself a 'pro'.
1. The meetings always start a few minutes late so people can connect.
2. Cameras are only on if people want to have them on. Often bandwidth doesn't allow for this.
My partner and I live in different countries and I'm pretty sure we're not going to see each other for a long time. I know this isn't the most pressing issue, but it's still 😔

During my Quantum Field Theory exam I genuinely planned how I would leave the country and start over because I was panicking over not being able to answer a single question. Half an hour before the end, I managed to scrape enough together to *just* pass.
Now I work at CERN.
I was honoured to be among the recipients of the ATLAS Outstanding Achievement Awards for our team's Outreach work over the last two years! 🥳
Unfortunately, due to covid, I couldn't attend the ceremony in person, but happily the award found its way to me.
Give it up for the recipients of the ATLAS Outstanding Achievement Awards! 👏 These exceptional collaborators were celebrated at an award ceremony held at

As a young PhD student at CERN, I slept outside the auditorium to be in the room when the announcement of the Higgs boson discovery was made.
I'm very happy to be back in the auditorium as part of the celebrations for

Hello! I got my PhD in particle physics and have been working on the ATLAS experiment at CERN for the last ten years.
The second photo pretty much sums up my day-to-day work.
My new laptop sticker arrived yesterday! I wanted something professional-but-fun to have on the front of my work laptop, so I covered it in photos of ATLAS and the LHC at
#CERN
, with cameos from ALICE, CMS & LHCb!
What do you think? 👩💻
Reporting for duty for today's

: yellow 💛!
This t-shirt perfectly describes my daily work: smash particles and the patriarchy (& more!)! 💪🏼
And yes, I put my yellow armchair on the balcony to enjoy a cup of tea in my fancy tea cup from my yellow tea pot 😄
I'm hiring a PhD researcher to work at the
@IoP_UvA
and with
@_nikhef
in top quark analysis with the
@ATLASexperiment
at
#CERN
!
Please share with potential candidates!
Deadline to apply: 15th June
I'm curious. What's your favourite Halloween costume you've ever gone as? Please share photos if you have them!
Mine is probably the year I went as a severed head in a freezer.

You know you're a particle physicist when you look at the base of your wine glass and see a particle detector with a broken magnet 😄
(I'm celebrating the end of my first day 😊)
My only requirement for my summer holiday in August was that I wanted to sit on a sandy beach, sipping a cocktail.
I probably should have been a little more specific...
It was ~ 14°C in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland that day, with up to 35 mph winds.
That wasn't going to stop me!
It's the International Day of Women and Girls in Science! Here I am after a long few days (years 😅) supporting my amazing colleagues to share their research, as well as working as a physicist in the ATLAS Collaboration. This is my favourite jumper for today!

Reminiscing that it's been five years and two days since I graduated with my PhD in Particle Physics from the University of Manchester! 👩🏼🎓👩🏼💻

Fantastic news!
Prof Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell has been awarded a Breakthrough Prize for the discovery of radio pulsars & will donate the £2.3m prize find to fund women, under-represented ethnic minority and refugee students to become physics researchers.

3. Ha! No. I'm often in meetings all day, even over lunchtime. I'm eating if I don't need to talk and I always have drinks.
4. Correction: learn how to share the conversation and respect the chair of the meeting.
5. People are working from home. Interruptions will happen 🤷🏼♀️.
