Advocating for resident physicians & improved healthcare, we’re the country’s largest housestaff union, representing 33,000 doctors & their patients nationwide.
The resident and fellow physicians at
@PennMedicine
are unionizing!!
UPenn housestaff would the first residents in Pennsylvania to unionize. We are determined to not only improve patient care at UPenn, but to set standards for what residency and equity in healthcare should be.
WE DID IT!!!!
Residents and fellows at
@MontefioreNYC
just won our union with over 80% voting YES! After weeks of captive audience meetings, 1-1s and more emails than we can count, we showed Monte that our solidarity is stronger than the fear they sowed to try and divide us.💪💜
This is the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at
@MassGenBrigham
.
What does this say about how MGB admin values & respects residents? Are we expendable? Do they think we’re a chore they have to put up with? Do they truly care about our well-being?
…this is why we’re unionizing🙃
We stand with Kenya’s striking healthcare workers of
@kmpdu
and champions of health worldwide, united in our fight for justice, safety, and the dignity of every caregiver.
#DoctorsStrike
A huge victory! We fought hard rallied with our community, went up against an $11 billion a year corporate health behemoth— and we WON. Because we stood united and we knew that we're on the right side fighting to build a more just & equitable society.
#NYCDocsStrike
IT'S A LANDSLIDE!!
The residents and fellows of
@GWtweets
won our union 253-16. We came together to fight for a seat at the table so we can advocate for the wellness of both our patients and each other AND WE DID IT!
The push to see residents as students and not employees is so that they can more easily be denied labor rights & protections to be exploited, devaluing our labor of keeping patient care running so that we accept less than we deserve.
Again, why residents absolutely need unions.
I viewed my residency years as a unique opportunity and privilege to be exposed to the maximum possible number of surgeries and clinical exposures and read about them at home while someone else was ultimately responsible for my actions. I never thought of myself as an employee.
We're giving our official notice today that we are planning to engage in an unfair labor practice strike in
@CountyofLA
. But we are still hopeful that we can avert this possibility and we urge the County to do the right thing.
#Care4USLA
Full statement:
Picket prep started with the police kicking us out of the picket space after a call from
@mountsinainyc
even though:
- employer and police had advanced notice
- federal protected right to picket on employer premise
- this is public property
#NYCDocsStrike
That’s right, ANOTHER ONE! The over 400 resident physicians of Kaiser Permanente have filed to form a union!
We’re unionizing, not only to make actual change that impacts our day-to-day well-being and patient care but to show how healthcare can be transformed. ✊
Congratulations to the 1,200+ residents and fellows of
@MontefioreNYC
who are organizing to improve both their working conditions and health care access in the Bronx.
When you invest in resident physicians, you invest in patient care.
#MonteIsUnionYes
The residents & fellows of
@GWHospital
know that graduate medical training needs to change. As doctors on the frontlines, we refuse to remain silent in the face of an unjust and unsustainable system. Now is the time to fight for our seat at the table and in the doctors’ lounges!
Resident physicians at Jamaica and Flushing Hospitals just voted to authorize a strike, with 93% of voters voting yes, if MediSys fails to bargain in good faith and agree to our demands around a living wage, benefits, and patient care.
#QueensStrikeReady
More May Day solidarity! There is power in unity and CIR members from hospitals all around the country have joined forces today for global solidarity, as well for collective actions at their own shops.
Residents and fellow physicians at
@UIHealth
have ratified our first contract, with a 18.5% salary increase, education $2,500 minimum education stipend, meal stipends and MORE! We bargained, we marched and we organized for almost a year, and together WE WON.
UPDATE: CIR physicians at
@MountSinaiNYC
Morningside/ West reached a deal tonight after 6 exhausting months of bargaining & hours before our ULP strike.
Our strike was averted, but our fight—with Mount Sinai and bosses like Sinai everywhere—has really only begun
#NYCDocsStrike
311 to 4!!! WE DID IT! In a LANDSLIDE victory, housestaff at Kaiser Permanente now have a union with CIR and 82% of resident physicians in CA are now unionized with CIR! WHEN WE FIGHT WE WIN!!!
Press release here:
LESS THAN 24 HRS
Mount Sinai ($11 billion/year in revenue), refuses to pay mostly immigrant doctors, serving a mostly immigrant community, fairly. An injustice.
@MountSinaiNYC
, you have the authority to avert the strike— it’s up to you now.
#QueensStrikeReady
#NYCDocsStrike
We know it's April Fools day, but this is not a joke!
More than 1,000 residents and fellows at
@uchicagomed
are unionizing so we can advocate for better so both we and our patients can thrive. 💪💜
It's a LANDSLIDE! Residents and fellows at
@NorthwesternMed
overwhelmingly voted to unionize, with 794-148 voting YES to join CIR/SEIU. We are stronger together. 💪💜
#UnionStrong
#NMBetter
The 1,300 resident and fellow physicians at
@NorthwesternMed
are unionizing, because we know that, together, we can help build something better for us and our community. 💜
We’re incredibly proud to endorse Dianne Morales for NYC mayor and to be the first union to do so! 🚨Dianne understands that we need radical change to truly address social determinants of health.
If resident physicians go on strike in
@CountyofLA
we'd be the first in our union to do so in 32 years & we didn't get here lightly - we've been fighting for months for what we need to give our patients the care they deserve.
#Care4UsLA

@LACountyBOS
CIR resident physicians from public hospitals across the city were out last night at Gracie Mansion,
@nycmayor
’s home, & even the rain couldn’t stop us.
Eric Adams has failed to address the fact that NYC frontline doctors are struggling to cover even just our basic necessities.
More CIR members band up today for
#MayDay
in solidarity with
@kmpdu
and all healthcare workers around the world! All of our struggles are intertwined and we must demand dignity and respect for all of us!
CIR VP Dr. Subhashree Nayak joined Rep.
@AnnaForFlorida
and Planned Parenthood SW & Central FL CMO Dr. Robyn Schickler outside the Florida Board of Medicine meeting this morning.
Housestaff at
@MassGenBrigham
are holding their union election this week & we’re going in encouraged with
@SenSanders
’ words of support as well as the backing we have received from our entire community.
The resident organizing movement is strong and it’s only going up from here.
We are proud to stand with
@kmpdu
, on
#MayDay
and beyond!
All healthcare workers around the world deserve to be safe and supported. Because healthcare is a human right!
.
@MountSinaiNYC
signs our paychecks but pays Elmhurst residents less than those doing the EXACT SAME JOB at Mount Sinai in Manhattan. So they’re paying primarily physicians of color serving a working class community of color less than doctors in wealthier, whiter neighborhoods.
WE WON! The vote tally is finished, and housestaff at
@StanfordHealth
have voted overwhelmingly in favor of forming a union with CIR 835-214. We’ll be able to announce the official certification in one week.
Welcome to the CIR family! ✊💜
Residents nationwide are fed up with corporate health care, union busting & sacrificing our own needs again and again to complete our medical training.
A second group of ~500
@mountsinainyc
docs are ready to start our ULP strike TMO AM–because we have no choice
#NYCDocsStrike
Thank you to the over 30 elected officials who are calling on
@MountSinaiNYC
to end this strike now by agreeing to pay parity & support for the frontline resident physicians at Elmhurst Hospital.
@mountsinainyc
@icahnmountsinai
are you listening yet?
#NYCDocsStrike
Update from LA - Resident physicians reached a tentative deal with
@CountyofLA
, more details on our major wins to come.
We're so proud of what we've accomplished in this historic campaign & so grateful for all the support from far and wide!
#Care4UsLA
The complete disregard, just the utter disrespect, that
@MountSinaiNYC
has for its workers would almost be shocking if you didn’t know them any better. See you tomorrow Sinai.
#NYCDocsStrike
#QueensStrikeReady
WE DID IT! After a grueling thirteen month-long contract fight,
@StanfordHealth
residents reached a tentative agreement, which includes a 21% increase to our compensation, last night!
Yesterday, CIR resident physicians at Jamaica and Flushing Hospitals gave MediSys our notice that we are ready to strike on May 15 over unfair labor practices, fair pay, and patient care demands.
#QueensStrikeReady
This is the reality for resident physicians at
@StanfordHealth
, the “home of champions.” Housing insecurity, mounting debt, and an immeasurable amount of stress. We need a fair contract TODAY!
#ShameOnStanford
Resident & fellows at
@MassGenBrigham
strive every day to help patients achieve their health goals in a system that often leaves the vulnerable behind. That’s why we’re fighting for health justice by advocating for better working conditions, educational environments, & resources.
About 700 CIR resident physicians at
@The_BMC
just won one of the best total compensation increases housestaff has secured anywhere, right up there with amazing recent wins at Alameda Health, the University of Vermont, and the UC system!
The

3 DAYS TO GO update on
@MountSinaiNYC
and Elmhurst Hospital CIR resident physician bargaining: NO DEAL.
We are more frustrated than ever and we feel we have no choice but to be

for Monday at 7AM. It's time to invest in Queens.

Wellness is not yoga or pizza. It’s being able to pay rent but also to be stress free, to save, to thrive.
That’s why today, we’re proud to announce
#SB525
, sponsored by
@SenMariaEDurazo
, to raise the minimum wage for healthcare workers, including residents, to $25/hour.
That's right, Yesterday, the residents and fellows of
@Penn
made history as the first group of housestaff in PA to unionize.
And this is just the beginning.
#UnionsBelongAtPenn
Today we’re proud to support
@JamaalBowmanNY
. CIR Sec-Treasurer Dr. Michael Zingman explains—we need healthcare & community investment, not bombs. Leaders like Bowman are facing attacks from groups like AIPAC. But the people united are sending him back to congress to fight for us
Current scene out today in front of
@The_BMC
!
Residents and fellows at Boston Medical Center are demanding a fair contract to better care for our patients. Because we all deserve that!
#FairContractBMC
#BMCForEveryone
It’s OFFICIAL! Say hello to the newest members of CIR! In a 209-59 vote, the residents and fellows of
@UVMMedCenter
have officially voted to UNIONIZE!
Congrats to these amazing housestaff who organized through ongoing surges and anti-union hospital ploys. It’s time for
#ourseat
.
@MountSinaiNYC
should be ashamed of paying immigrant, union doctors in Elmhurst less than non-union docs doing the same job in Manhattan, and we are not afraid to make our thoughts known 😉. Our well-being is Queens' health and we need parity, including hazard pay, NOW!
18% wage increases, patient caps, out-of-title work protections—
This was a huge win for us & our patients. Grateful for the support of our NY elected officials at every level of government for standing with us including
@SenSchumer
for helping to broker this deal.
The reasons that we
@PennMedicine
housestaff are unionizing are many but they all essentially come down to the same— the dignity and respect that we and our patients deserve. Our union election is in less than 2 weeks and we are ready!

Wonder where we’d be if
@PennMedicine
put in as much time, effort, & money into supporting its residents as it does in busting our union campaign 🤔
Guess we’ll never know. Follow below for UPenn’s latest. ⬇️
.
@MountSinaiNYC
has <24 hours to do the right thing so we don't have to strike at Elmhurst. We're joining with elected supporters & our community today to make one last plea to Sinai for tmo not to be the first US doctors' strike in 30 yrs:
#NYCDocsStrike
Today, the resident physicians and fellows at University of Chicago Illinois filed
#union
cards with the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board to unionize and join CIR! After an over year long campaign, we’re so happy to welcome our latest chapter! Congratulations!
The residents and fellows of
@UVMMedCenter
won our first contract! As the only teaching hospital in the state, we are the primary caregivers for Vermont's most vulnerable, and it was crucial for us to win the benefits and protections we needed to continue doing our jobs.
#1u
The residents and fellows of
@PennMedicine
have endured an onslaught of union-busting over the past few months, so here's a little taste of what they’ve experienced just within the last 72 hours.
It’s official.
By a vote of 793-2,
@StanfordHealth
residents & fellows have ratified the first housestaff union contract at the hospital & made all these incredible gains official.
We’re incredibly proud of what we accomplished and can’t wait to see what more the future holds😉
In our contract negotiations, BronxCare said it was ridiculous for us to ask for vegetarian, vegan, kosher, and halal meals…
We don’t think our religious or dietary restrictions are absurd.
A $104,000 resident salary. What would that mean? That residents could pay their bills. Less stress & burnout. That we’d be better able to focus on providing care.
#SB525
would lead us there. Read the piece below by CIR leader Dr. Kelley Butler.
WE FOUGHT AND WE WON!
“Fair compensation, even though it’s important, I think it was more about respect. It was about acknowledging our contribution, as resident doctors, that we make to the health care system."
#ProtectNYsHealth
@clauirizarry
@THECITYNY
Historically,
@The_BMC
Residents were always the highest paid in the city. When BMC was under severe financial strain a decade ago, the Resident physicians believed in the BMC mission so much, they willingly took salary freezes along with their colleagues.
#BMCStrong

Resident physicians stand with our nurses!
@nynurses
are out today fighting for safe staffing levels, a fair contract, and the ability to care for our patients. Solidarity!
#NYCNurseStrike
#SafeStaffingSavesLives
Congrats to Rutgers residents and fellows for reaching a deal after almost a year of bargaining! We're so proud of how far we pushed
@RutgersU
, but the fight continues—it's time for fair contracts for all Rutgers workers and the mental health care we need!
We have filed for our union at Greater Lawrence Family Health Center❗️
Throughout the pandemic and especially in this latest surge, residents have been relied upon to offset the failings of our care system and Covid response. That is why we’re organizing.
How is it that Bellevue and NYU housestaff are doing the exact same work, yet Bellevue residents are paid much less just because?
@nyulangone
, are we worth less to you? Do our needs not matter as much?
We are the same program and we demand equal treatment!
We are a coalition with representatives from anesthesia, ENT, medicine, neurology, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, surgery, and more ready to join us and fight for safer patient care and more humane working conditions.
The many will always beat the money. But that means for
@JamaalBowmanNY
to beat AIPAC's record spending, we need to turn out every vote.
So whether you have 5 hours or 5 mins, join a phonebank today to help reach every voter we need before polls close:
CIR members at UPenn met up during lunch and things got a little… heated.
@PennMedicine
decided to call in the cops and set up barricades to *checks notes* prevent residents from grabbing burritos..?
Yesterday,
@MountSinaiNYC
residents at Elmhurst Hospital rallied in front of the hospital to show Mount Sinai that our community will not tolerate them treating us or our patients as less than.
"Only about 7 percent of practicing physicians across the U.S. belong to unions... Across the country, the pandemic has spurred a rapid rise in unionization among residents, medical school graduates working at a hospital under other doctors’ supervision."
Over 60 elected officials throughout New York have signed onto this letter by
@NYSenatorRamos
calling on
@NYCMayor
to reach a fair contract with the thousands of resident physicians & fellows at the city’s public hospitals who provide frontline care to NYC communities every day.
The resident physicians at MediSys Health stride every day to be the best doctors they can be. Our new contract supports that mission.
Thank you
@SenSchumer
for your ongoing efforts in this fight for improved working conditions & patient care for NY communities.
After supporting resident and union colleagues who advocated for hazard pay, publicly challenging systemic racism, and fighting for gender equity in medicine, Dr. Kristin Carmody was terminated by NYU Lagone. We stand in solidarity with Dr. Carmody.
Do hospitals still think pizza parties are enough? In this economy? It's enforceable union contract wins or nothing.
@MaimoHealth
residents just won 18% raises over 3 years, $1250 for education, Juneteenth as paid holiday, pandemic pay language, & more—because we have a UNION.
The residents & fellows at
@The_BMC
in Boston are rallying TODAY for a fair contract with a living wage and crucial benefits. When frontline health workers are well, patients are better taken care of.
#FairContractBMC
#BMCForEveryone
In case you didn’t hear, the resident physicians & fellows at
@UChicagoMed
are unionizing for their well-being & patient care! Here are some of the week’s headlines to catch you up😉
“More than 1,000 UChicago Medicine residents, fellows move to unionize”
WE DID IT! After 10 months of bargaining, organizing petitions, open bargaining sessions, and collective actions, the residents and fellows at
@UIHealth
have reached a tentative agreement on our FIRST CONTRACT!
Ever since
@MassGenBrigham
learned its residents & fellows are unionizing, they’re been busy pulling out all the stops, even giving us a 10% raise, to convince us we don’t need a union. Which just goes to show what they could’ve been doing all along.
One of the most unconvincing anti-union pieces ever peddling the myth that unionizing means faculty can’t mentor b/c there’s no flexibility…
This is FALSE— ask thousands of unionized residents. Unions create a floor for all residents to be respected, NOT limits to our education
I worry about the impact collective bargaining could have on how
@MassGenBrigham
trains doctors for the future and the lasting impact it could have on their careers, writes chief medical officer William Curry.
We cannot provide the best possible care for our community without the support we need to do our jobs. It is exactly for our patients that we’re taking a stand. We’ve had it with these inequities.
@MountSinaiNYC
, will you act?
#NYCDocsStrike
On Tuesday, Mount Sinai Morningside and West physicians could be the THIRD group of
@MountSinaiNYC
workers to strike in the past 6 months. Mount Sinai when will you get the message? Do the right thing now so we don't have to spend a minute away from our patients.
#NYCDocsStrike
Resident physicians have continually been exploited, taken advantage of, and profited from for decades.
But the tides are turning in this wave of housestaff organizing and we are determined to reclaim our humanity ✊
Doctors stand with our fellow workers at Writers’ Guild of America in the pursuit of decent wages and working conditions— because we all deserve that!
CIR leaders Dr. Frances Gill, Dr. Shea Nagler, Dr. Andrea Soto-López, and Dr. Mahima Iyengar at the WGA picket today.
