The second of two written messages from the Franklin expedition, dated 25 April 1848, was signed by Captains FitzJames & Crozier (by then senior officer). ‘Erebus’ & ‘Terror’ had been abandoned on 22 April & the remaining crew intended to walk to Back’s Fish River. @RMGreenwich

The Dutch northeast passage expedition under Wm. Barentsz, encountered a polar bear for the first time on 9 July, 1594. The bear tried to climb aboard one of the ships & was shot with a musket, captured & leashed. When brought aboard, the bear rampagedand was killed. @rijksmuseum

In the wee hours of the morning of 26 November, 1666, notorious highwayman Dudley Costello and a band of about 30 other men burned Castlemore and village of Ballyhane. He had been proclaimed a traitor in June and was pretty pissed about it.

James Butler was raised to the Duke of Ormond in Ireland on 30 March, 1661 (creation fee £40 payable out of the Exchequer), & was created Ld High Steward of Eng. As the latter, #Ormond processed immediately behind Charles II at the coronation carrying the crown. @YorkArtGallery
