#OnThisDay 10 June 1904 - #JamesJoyce met the love of his life, #NoraBarnacle . The pair met in Dublin, where Nora worked in Finn’s Hotel, and they first went out together on June 16, 1904. This date was later immortalised as #Bloomsday , the day the events in #Ulysses take place.

#OTD 6 Dec 1922 - The #IrishFreeState , Saorstát Éireann, came into being. Here is their official handbook (printed in 1932), filled with woodblock engravings by the likes of #HarryKernoff and images by #PaulHenry . It was printed on paper from the Swiftbrook Paper Mills in Dublin.

#OscarWilde was profoundly affected by the loss of his sister Isola and wrote ‘Requiescat’ in her memory. He carried a lock of her hair in an envelope until the end of his life. Wilde said Isola lit up his family’s lives like “a golden ray of sunshine dancing about our home.”

People gather at #Newgrange in Co. #Meath for winter #solstice dawn on each of the mornings from December 18-23 inclusive. It is an exceptionally grand passage tomb built during the #Neolithic period, around 3200 BC, making it older than #Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids.

#OnThisDay 13 Dec 1955 - Irish artist and cartoonist, Grace Gifford Plunkett, who was active in the Republican movement, died at the age of 67. She was buried with full military honours, close to her husband Joseph #Plunkett ’s final resting place in #Glasnevin Cemetery.

Did you know 30 November is an important anniversary for three well-known Irish writers? #OTD in 1667, Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin. Over 230 years later, Oscar Wilde, aged just 46, died in Paris in 1900. The poet Patrick Kavanagh passed away in Dublin on 30 November 1967.

This document confirms that Edward Chadwicke, former Cromwellian soldier, was to be given 20 acres of land in Cork, 1654. #Cromwell didn't have enough money to pay his soldiers - in exchange for their services, they would be given confiscated Irish land; .

#OTD 16 Feb 1902 - Birth of singer and ballad collector #DeliaMurphy in Co. #Mayo . She was one of the first female performers in #Ireland . During #WWIII , she aided Vatican official, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, in saving the lives of 6,500 Allied soldiers and Jews.
