Making history at Columbia. First Yupik woman graduating with a civil engineering degree since Columbia University’s founding. Here’s to creating a future where we as native woman no longer have to say we are the first.
In 2011, the officer who killed George Floyd also killed an Alaska Native man. Leroy Martinez, he was 23 years old and had his hands up. He had his hands up.
In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day I wanted to provide a thread of acclaimed shows and films that feature Indigenous peoples! The film industry has such a violent legacy with native peoples, things need to be better. These are some of my favorite shows/films growing up.
In honor of Indigenous People’s Day I wanted to provide another thread of films that feature Indigenous Peoples. It’s been so so amazing to see how Indigenous creatives have used and are using film and art to navigate identity and personhood. These are some of my favorite films
Columbia is threatening to suspend students that participate in peaceful protests, demonstrations and sit ins. This is so terrifying and targets Black and Brown students at the university.
these cards are being handed out to student protestors. have been informed by columbia university admin that protestors face conduct violations. protest has remained peaceful & complied with instructions. anyone know if these cards are legal?
I had to delete this tweet after my school found it. Now that I’ve graduated I have a few things to say.
I’ve been written off as angry and aggressive for my platform and what I stand for.
To the white teacher,
again remember whose land you’re on.
today at Columbia University. So many students showed up in support of Palestine here, amidst the restrictions to campus and the high NYPD presence.
The Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine organized this. The photos speaks for itself. We stand with Palestine.
Indigenous Columbia engineering graduate. First Alaska Native & Samoan to graduate with a Civil Engineering degree since Columbia’s founding. I owe this all to community.
In 2008 Ira Latrell Toles, a Native American man, was shot by the same police officer who killed George Floyd and Leroy Martinez. I will not name the police officer. He doesn’t deserve to be humanized he doesn’t deserve to be named.
1. Molly of Denali
This is the first nationally distributed children’s series to feature a Native American lead! It’s one of my favorite shows and features Molly, an Alaska Native girl. This is a show made and produced by native folks and is voiced by Alaska Natives.
I’m so sick. So fucking sick rn. What we’re not going to do is co opt the BLM movement and disregard the violence that black peoples face from the police. But we need to acknowledge this as well.
2. Whale Rider (2002)
This is a film that stars the youngest actress ever nominated for an oscar. It’s a Māori coming of age movie and has themes of tradition and overcoming rigid gender stereotypes. It’s beautiful and so powerful.
3. Boy (2010)
Taika Waititi, one of the first Indigenous filmmakers to win an Oscar, directed this film. It features a young Māori boy in New Zealand in the ‘80s. i love this film :,)
Harvard Peabody Museum released a statement earlier today stating that they hold the hair of 700 Native children that attended US Boarding Schools. This is so disgusting. Hair was also taken from Native people in Alaska and anthropologists took hair non-consensually.
hearing justices on scotus ask “what if the child doesn’t want to be treated indian” during the ICWA hearings makes me so sick. They don’t understand how tribal sovereignty functions at all.
Today I graduated high school. I spoke in Yup’ik and talked about the significance of wearing cultural regalia. Words cannot express how I feel. I did this for native youth who were ever told they weren’t capable.
I did this for my people.
4. The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open (2019)
Directed by Elle Máijá Tailfeathers, this film addresses issues like domestic violence Native women face . It features two Indigenous women, Violet Nelson (Kwakwaka’wakw) and Elle.
7. Blood Quantum (2019)
This is an Indigenous horror film!! It’s about the Mi'qmaq community facing the zombie apocalypse. When I first saw this I was just- this is contemporary Indigenous representation and it’s so good.
8. Moana (2016)
Disney film. The main character is voiced by a Native Hawaiian! It’s influenced by Polynesian culture and traditions and is beautifully animated.
I want to acknowledge that it’s not perfect but it was one of the first films where I saw representation like this.
6. Roma (2018)
This is an Oscar nominated film!! It’s a movie that features, Yalitza Aparicio, an Indigenous woman, who plays a young domestic worker in Mexico City. She was also nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for the Oscars in 2019.
why are white high school kids so offended when you tell them that your anti-colonialism?
“yOu wOuLd’nT hAVe aN iPhonE if yOur pEopLe weRen’t cOlonIzeD”
Bitch, and what about it?
YA’LL MY GRADUATION POST ON INSTAGRAM WAS TAKEN DOWN. I have no words. I simply talked about the significance of wearing cultural regalia in my school district and how students passed this policy. I talked about graduation rates of Alaska Native and Native American students.
I’ll never stop talking about this. But the fact that Stephanie Meyer took very real legends and stories from the Quileute tribe and centered them around vampires will never sit right with me.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’ll be at Harvard doing research on Indigenous knowledge and ecology, Indigenous girl in stem things but also little me would never imagine I would be where I’m at today. So thankful <3
ANYWAYS AVATAR IS ON NETFLIX!! and just a reminder that the water tribe is based on Inuit culture!! if they make another live version of this they better cast indigenous peoples
ok let’s have this conversation. poc with privilige( I.e. have wealth/legacy parents) need to stop co opting narratives and taking up spaces they shouldn’t be taking up. im so sick
Indigenous woman in stem.
I presented my research today on the simulated effects of climate change on fireweed photosynthesis. So so thankful to be doing this work.
I also want to reiterate that I don’t speak for all native peoples! But for folks wondering what else they can do, educating themselves about the land you reside on is the bare min, stop telling native folks that you’ve seen Disney’s Pocahontas, one of the worst films. There are
This is my graduation speech. They said I was an “angry native” when they first reviewed it. My peers and school tried to silence my voice. Yet I still spoke. I was scared and anxious at the response I would get when I gave it.
need folks to understand that all of this is rooted in the non consensual taking of land. the autonomy over our own bodies is rooted in this. This is how settler colonialism functions.
To Indigenous students in higher education:
Most times you’re the only native in the classroom. Your intelligence is questioned because of your indigeneity. You feel alone.
But know that I look up to you.
Native youth look up to you.
I am where I am because of you.
just want to remind everyone that the police were never created to “protect us” they solely were made to protect capital and oppress minorities and is literally a colonial construct.
If you’re asking yourself what you can do today, consider donating here. Indigenous peoples protesting at Mt. Rushmore are being shot at by police protecting sacred land. Protecting their land.
Like WOW there were literally 7 white boys coming after one of my native friends, she’s only a sophomore, and they literally were telling her that it was unfair how they couldn’t get money because of their “whiteness.”
I. don’t. want. to. hear. it.
Take your privilege elsewhere
-better movies and films. Please do better and be cognizant of how you benefit off the dispossession of Indigenous land and say happy IPD to your native friends 🥺 ALSO if you have the means consider paying for a cup of coffee for a native person today
WWF is thrilled to announce Charitie Ropati (she/her) as the winner of the 2023 WWF-US Conservation Leadership Award!
This WWF-US Conservation Leadership Award is given annually to a young conservation leader for outstanding contributions in the realm of protecting the planet.
I find it really ironic that a sex worker is contributing to a crisis caused by climate change, that would have been prevented if ppl listened to indigenous ppls to began with, and wore an eskimo costume that literally contributes to the erasure of indigenous women.
I finally feel seen. Native girls and boys across the country will finally see themselves and it won’t be another harmful stereotype but someone who looks like them. This is representation.
To native youth, you can do art, dance, write stories. You can be superheroes or live in the stars or fight in galaxies far away. These are things you can do. Don’t let a colonial construct stop you from dreaming the biggest things imaginable.
I’ve just been invited to speak at the Alaska Native Studies Undergraduate Research Symposium at the University of Alaska Anchorage to give my presentation on research in decolonizing western education in the Anchorage School District. I’m still in high school. I...I’m blessed.
“I dedicate this to all the Indigenous kids in the world who want to do art and dance and write stories.”
- Taika when receiving an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay
writing this was really healing for me and if you have a time to read this I would appreciate that so much. today is the National Day of Awareness for MMIWG and this is my story. Quyana
Trigger Warning ⚠️
Today is National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Womxn.
@charitieropati
wrote a very personal and powerful piece that is important to read and share.
Check out our newest submission “I Will Not Be Silent.”
ALSO JUST A REMINDER TO EVERYONE THAT OUR LIVES, Indigneous peoples lives are more important than oil. More valuable than an oil pipeline. And protecting our lands from this type of exploitation is maintaining our livelihoods and culture.
I don’t think folks understand how homelessness in our communities is a direct result of colonialism. So many native peoples are displaced and it’s so upsetting to see our people face housing insecurity on land that was once ours.
geninuely shit like this pisses me off. the water tribes are based off Inuit culture, traditions, and practices. Katara and Sokka should be played in the live with Inuk actresses/actors. Idc. it’s the bare minimum and we barely have any representation.
Also want to remind folks how significant it was to see
@TaikaWaititi
create films centered around Polynesian identity. Feeling really grateful and am so proud of where I come from.
me and my native friends walking into our dorms and public safety telling us that visitors aren’t allowed into student housing, like that’s a lot to unpack 😭
yayy parasite won. But keep in mind that the whole “American Indian” narrative existed to showcase how the rich exploit other cultures and minimize them to these really harmful stereotypes. Pls understand that, I’m so scared that’s many viewers won’t.
1. Night Raiders (2021) premiered this year and is directed by a Danis Goulet (Cree-Métis). This is her debut film! It’s a dystopian movie that centers a Cree woman who joins a resistance movement against the military government to save her daughter. It’s in theaters in Canada!
🚨 colonizers stop reading 🚨
my Indigenous friends. we could deadass take back our land if we wanted to. reparations have not been given and settler colonialism is still ongoing. let me know what you think. my sunday is completely open.
saw my best friend today and i am so proud. last summer we were worried about where we would be and what our future would look like and now we’re at Harvard and Columbia. AND we’re Indigenous .
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered...
a 40 yr old white man just told me that I have privilige as a native person and that I wouldn’t have gotten into Columbia if I wasn’t Alaska Native and I-
How can someone make one feel so invalidated? I’m mad at myself, I shouldn’t be so bothered by this, but I am.
Just want to add to this. Wayne Reyes was a Native American man who died bc of this officer. But Ira Toles was a black man who was shot and he survived. And Leroy Martinez survived. They survived.
@charitieropati
This information is incorrect. Though the officer was involved, both Leroy Martinez and Ira Toles are alive today, thank god. Please y’all, we have to maintain proper research especially when it comes to talking about people’s lives.
Taika Waititi gives acceptance speech for Best Adapted Screenplay: "I dedicate this to all the indigenous kids in the world who want to do art and dance and write stories. We are the original storytellers and we can make it here, as well."
