This is a poor decision. You can protect pensioner incomes in more equitable and affordable ways. At some point one of the major parties is going to have to be brave enough to invest in the future generations of the UK. Guess not yet.

The problem is, the trade off isn’t as simple as health vs economy. Prioritising covid-related health has sidelined non-covid health, mental health is deteriorating, recessions mean poorer health for many... Gov needs be transparent w/ the public about these complex trade offs

Enough of the 'A-Levels' don't matter chat. They do, in loads of jobs. And yes, there may be a handful of 'I failed my exams & am now a multi-milionaire' examples, but most young people, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, need the best results they can get. This matters

Important work from @RedfieldWilton on attitudes on tax by age. One of the paradoxes of British politics is that the young have moved sharply to the right on economics and left at the ballot box, and older voters the opposite. How does this happen? Because culture is still king.

Unpopular opinion - ministers should be able to bring people in they think can make a sizeable difference in delivering their priorities. These can be *political* appointments to *non-political* roles. 1/

A 🌹supporter parachuted in to be a senior DG in the Civil Service without an open appointment process. Where are the Perm Sec, the @SciTechgovuk NEDs, the @instituteforgov or the Cabinet Office Ethics team on this? Sue Gray would never have let this happen under previous

I'm a week late, but I've just read Lord Willetts' Independent Review of @SciTechgovuk business cases & it is a cracking read. Seriously. It's just 22 pages (+ a summary list of the recomm'ns) but in the problem of DSIT business cases is a microcosm of Whitehall 1/

Well this is exciting- @stkaye is joining the @reformthinktank team to help us shape a big new policy agenda 🎉 At Reform we've been thinking about what the past decade, bookended by crises, has taught us about the State Our conclusion: it's not fit for purpose 1/

"Even as other capital has crumbled, the stock of social capital has risen, acting as a countercyclical stabiliser across communities." We need to invest in "the institutional immune system that is our social sector" Love this from Andy Haldane 👏

This is such a crucial point Whitehall has big problems that are limiting its impact in deeply worrying ways But many civil servants share those frustrations & want reform We need those ppl to drive change- generalising them as cr*p or not caring is counterproductive 1/

@jamespriceglos James - isn’t it possible to critique a policy without such a sweeping (and wrong in my experience) generalisation about DfE civil servants. Glad to hear a very different perspective from @GandonAmy on @BBCr4today as part of @reformthinktank Reimagining Whitehall project.
