Just read the 92 page report from Pfizerโphenomenal. Most adverse effects are a 20% increase in headache or fatigue compared to placebo group. Insanely good results. This is what I have to say to the scientists and clinicians who busted their butts to make this happen!
HI All, I'm gutted to confirm that last Friday, Queen's, Canada and the world lost a giant in chemistry.
Dr. Victor Snieckus passed away at the age of 83. A formal announcement will come soon, but it we are all incredibly sad to have lost such a bright light. 1/
Scientific honesty starts with the PI. This is what I do:
1) let your ppl know from the beginning and every time you discuss data that you prefer QUALITY data to GOOD results. I prefer an accurate low yield to a B.S. high one. Tell ppl that frequently.... 1/
So today I said goodbye to my biggest hero, my biggest inspiration, my biggest cheerleader, my mom Linda Crudden. After having the four of us, she went back to get her BSc and MSc. Then she went to work in psychiatric mental health care, working with addiction issues..1/
Congratulations๐ to

In my 1st talk I gave a shout out to a great PDF in the group who had a 6 month mat leave, left every day at 5pm but banged out 11 papers incl in Jacs, nat chem, and acie-so ppl can take decent mat leaves, work normal hours and still produce-Applause broke out. Pretty awesome!
So honored with this award from my favorite funding agency! Thanks to
@NSERC_CRSNG
for the award and for supporting me without break since I was a graduate student. The award day was absolute magic! Thank you
@alejandroadem
and your team for the award and the great day!
When you hear about an author calling a prominent journal (not mine) and asking their work to get faster review because they know another paper is in the works since they've seen it for review, and when that journal does accelerate the publication... 1/
When I started my career I was told not to collaborate so I could "Develop my own chemistry". Not sure if ppl are still being told that now, but I have to say, in addition to interacting with grad students, the best part of the job is collaboration! I โค๏ธ my collaborators!
Hey
#chemtwitter
, I am hiring FOUR PDFs effective immediately. See thread!
PDF 1: Experience in STM imaging. You can be a physicist!
PDF 2: Surface science โ planar surfaces. Some synthetic experience a bonus. XPS experience is good.
PDF 3: Clusters!
PDF 4: NHCs!

Imagine being a woman or a person of colour working at

IMAGINE how you feel.
If you're not one of these people, do something.
Delighted to have our work highlighted on the cover of
@NatureChemistry
! Thanks for the great work
@chemkitty
and the suggested changes from Nat Chem and thanks/congrats to all the SUPER hard working students/PDFs that made this a reality!
Thanks
@CIC_ChemInst
and to Melanie Sanford for nominating me! Mostly thanks to the amazing students Iโve had over the years who have helped bring our chemistry to this level!!
The Alfred Bader award is presented as a mark of recognition for excellence in research in organic chemistry by a scientist who is currently working in Canada. Congrats to

Congratulations to our new members! Just announced! We are honoring the excellence of extraordinary leaders in an array of disciplines and professions. The first members were elected in 1781. Learn who was elected in 2023:
"Here we are 100 years later making use of these chemistries in ways that we hope will benefit human health."

As promisedโtoday's exciting news from
@ACSCatalysis
! We're delighted to announce that Dr. Raffaella Buonsanti from EPFL Switzerland is joining us as an Associate Editor! The Buonsanti lab (
@lnce_epfl
) bridges catalysis, materials science, chemical engineering and energy. 1/
Some very sad news today. Dr. Suning Wang passed away this morning. Many of you know her phenomenal research, but she was also a brilliant teacher and mentor. At the very end, her biggest concern was that her students be looked after. She will be sorely missed. RIP Suning.
Congratulations to Cathy Crudden (
@cathleencrudden
) for winning the 2019 Montrรฉal Medal! "The Montrรฉal Medal is presented as a mark of distinction and honour to a resident of Canada for an outstanding contribution to the profession of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada."
So sad to hear that Bob Grubbs passed away today. He was an incredibly thoughtful and kind person. He came to Queen's to give a talk many years ago, and when I heard about how busy his travel schedule was, I booked off an afternoon and took him kayaking.... 1/

There are so many plusses being in person at a conference. Also so many reminders of

New plan. All virtual talks I am hosting will begin with a musical โwalk onโ. I will be asking speakers for their preferences.

Letโs be clear on this. Cis straight white guys are dramatically over represented in science yet they are a minority on the planet. So what is it, are there huge systemic biases against other groups or are CSWM just really really great at science? โฆ.1/

For this reason, assessments should primarily address the actual science, not where it's published. This is hard for sure, but I think increasingly important. 4/4
At the conclusion of
#InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience
#WomenInScience
, I want to send a few shout outs to the women in my life who have made a difference. First and foremost, my mom. Here she is getting her MScโI was 1st in the family to go to grad school, she was 2nd.
Three things make me feel great about our scientific community:
1. Seeing students/PDFs presenting their work with great enthusiasm. 2. Seeing students/PDFs supporting each other by showing up for each otherโs talks. 3. Seeing big name researchers in 8 am student talks.

I realize that as I go through life as a prof, I learn more and more about how to be a better scientist/mentor/educator/author/reviewer/grant writer, etc. My fear is that by the time I get my shit together, it will be time to retire.

Two women win the Noble prize for chemistry and apparently it's a thing, while since the original of the prize, it has mostly been given to groups of men.
They deserved the prize 100%. Let it the fuck go.
