Sat next to two Scots from Airdrie down for the cricket. Chatted with them all day. Dad and son. When the dad went to the bar, the son leaned in and said his dad's terminally ill and had insisted on enjoying The Ashes in person no matter his nationality. Beautiful. Old Trafford

Corbieres, on Half Moon Street in Manchester. Well worth negotiating the short dramatic descent down the stairs into this basement boozer. A fine jukebox and a cold drink would be your reward.

The Briton's Protection A Manchester alehouse dating back to around 1806. A one-time army recruitment centre, it was ironically said to have given refuge to the injured who suffered vicious assault from the powers-that-be in what turned out to be the Peterloo Massacre of 1819

11.17am, Saturday 15th June, 1996 The IRA detonated a bomb in the centre of Manchester. I remember the boom clearly to this day. The postbox in the picture took the full blast and remained defiantly unflinched. It's still there today. Amazingly the pubs remained open in town.

The Trafford Road entrance to Salford Docks before the worldwide shipping to and from here ceased. Most Salfordians had some kind of link to those docks. I still remember hearing the ships horns blaring in the New Year across the city.

Mr Thomas's Chophouse A much loved alehouse institution, and as any Manchester pub aficionado will attest, home to the most fatally sharp and treacherous descent down the stairs to the khazis anywhere in the city. Gravity grappled with me many a time.

I think I can safely say that my trek today from Todmorden to Sowerby Bridge was the best canal walk I've ever done. The conditions were absolutely perfect. Every view with every step was achingly photogenic. I was whisked away to another world. Rochdale Canal

I set off this morning from Leeds to walk the entire 127 miles of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (not in one go - over the weekends of this summer). Seemed a daft enough idea but thought why not?
