In 2010, Andrew Bellatti was speeding, lost control & hit a car, killing Dave Reid.
Bellatti wasn't drunk or on drugs; he was running late. He wrote a letter to Reid's wife, Lynette, from jail.
She found the note in June & began watching Bellatti's games
Here is Hayden Dorfman, age 10, who caught the helmet Harper threw after he was ejected tonight. A few security guards approached him and told him Harper wanted to sign it.
He said Harper is his favorite player and added that this is “the best baseball game he’s ever been to”
Ranger Suárez's wife, Joseany, has known him since they were kids. She'd never seen him pitch professionally. His kids hadn't either — until today.
His family is here through the season, and will go to as many games as possible.
"It’s an amazing feeling"
I asked Pete Rose what he would say to people who say his presence here sends a negative message to women. His response: “No, I’m not here to talk about that. Sorry about that. It was 55 years ago babe.”
Reminder that Orion Kerkering adheres to three rules on the mound, that he's used since high school.
“Rule No. 1 was, ‘Don’t be a bitch. Rule No. 2 was, ‘Don’t suck.’ Rule No. 3 was, ‘Don’t break rules one and two.’”
Larry Anderson on the broadcast: "I just hope the national media will pay attention to this, and know that this game isn't being played in Philadelphia, it's being played in Atlanta."
Last week, Alaine Porter, a teacher in Northeast Philly, passed away at age 35. She was a Phillies fan. So, her coworker brought her to the game last night.
As Bryce Harper took his AB in the third, she held up Porter's photo.
You know what happened next
Brandon Marsh found this tshirt waiting for him in his locker today.
His late father, Jake, was a huge fan of Guns N’ Roses. No one who designed the t-shirt knew that.
Marsh sees it as another sign that is father is always with him.
“It was meant to be”
For years, Jeff Hoffman had “FAH,” carved into his glove, for “fuck all hitters.”
But last week, he made a change, from “FAH” to “PHAH,” as in, “phuck all hitters.”
This is the Phillies pitching mantra. It’s about fearlessness, which he has had lately:
Frankie Two Scoops (the press box ice cream guy) is so confident that the Phillies will be back he ordered ice cream for next week.
“You’ll be back,” he said. “I know it. I’m like a witch.”
This is Hao-Yu Lee, a Phillies shortstop prospect from Taiwan. He says he’s learning English from his teammates. “The best way to learn English is through trash talking!”
Nick Castellanos spent the off day with his family, & his dog, Tiger, who had to be put down this morning. Tonight, he honored him with a solo HR.
He’s grateful for the time they had yesterday.
“It was ironic, right? I was able to go home. He was there.”
As Mike Fiers walked on the field ahead of his first Cactus League start today against the Giants, he got a round of applause, and one fan shouted: “Thank you, Mike; baseball loves you”
This afternoon, Darick Hall saw Rhys Hoskins at his locker. He gave him a hug.
"I’m sorry,” Hall said. “This is really rough.”
“Actually, I’m happy for you,” Hoskins replied.
Hall was moved, but he wasn't surprised. This is who Hoskins has always been:
Harper said he texted with Snell about their interaction following the HBP
"I've been playing against Blake since we were 10 or 11 years old. I know there was no ill will behind that at all. It's part of the game. The inside pitch is part of the game. It just got away from him"
Harper said his teammates told him about Arcia's comment.
"They just kind of told me, and they looked at me, and they were like, what are you going to do?"
Asked Marsh about this. He said that Rhys Hoskins used to read to local school kids in the Philly area. Now Marsh is doing it.
He added that he "can't read well" and takes "80 minutes to read a 10 page book," so he is working on refining his craft

Johan Rojas and Kody Clemens were in Durham, NC this morning. Their original flight to Philly was delayed to 6 pm.
So, they decided to fly Frontier.
"The only flight out of there that was on time was a Frontier flight," Clemens said. "Rojas and I take Frontier baby, hell yeah."
Bryson Stott just met with Caden Marge, the kid who went viral after he was shown on TV during Stott’s walk off home run a few days ago. He gave him this bat:
August 17, 1957 - Philadelphia Phillies Hall of Fame CF Richie Ashburn struck a foul ball into the stands, breaking the nose of spectator Alice Roth. As Roth was being carried off the field on a stretcher Ashburn hit her with another foul ball, breaking a bone in her knee
Since ST, Wes Wilson and Nick Castellanos have bonded. When he was called up, Castellanos invited Wilson & his wife to stay at his home.
They've been living with him through the playoffs.
“I want to take things off his plate so he can focus on baseball"
A few months ago, I reached out to the Braves to see if I’d be able to chat with Hank Aaron about a barnstorming team he’d played on in 1955. It seemed like a total long shot, but I heard back from
@atlsports
almost right away. There was no time limit on the interview, and (1/3)
Nick Castellanos was asked if Liam — one of the Phillies bat boys today — got swept up when he hit a home run.
“Apparently," he said. "Because my bat was sitting right there. As a dad, I’ve got to hold him accountable.”
Brandon Marsh, who played with Michael Lorenzen in 2022 with the Angels, says he is a “great pitcher, an incredible teammate, and has big biceps.”
“He’s gonna be a great fit here. I’m super excited to see him again and give him a hug. I hope he picks me up. He’s strong.”
Last year, José Alvarado started making rotisserie chickens out of towels after the Phillies hit home runs. He began hanging them up in the bullpen. It has quickly become a Phillies tradition.
On the origin story of the "home run chicken":
Brandon Marsh said that he stayed with his family in his hometown of Buford, GA last night. His mom, Sonja, made him breakfast this morning.
"French toast - fire. Hash browns - fire. Bacon - fire. And some eggs - also fire."
If he goes 4-for-4 tonight, you now know why.
Harper on Stott's walkoff home run: “I’m so happy for the kid, man. What an at-bat. What a situation for him. Being able to put our trust in our young guys the last couple days, and really let them just play… it’s been great. And it paid off today.”
Nick Castellanos says his son, Liam, is here. There’s is one All Star he is particularly eager to meet.
“He wants to meet Ronald Acuña Jr. He said, ‘Dad, he’s really good!’ And I said, ‘Yeah, he’s really good.’”
Now that we’re officially in offseason mode, I wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone who followed along. To say it was an eventful first year on the beat would be an understatement (lol), but I learned a ton and enjoyed every bit of it. Looking forward to year two! ☺️
One year ago today, Alec Bohm said "I f'ing hate this place." Nick Castellanos approached him afterwards.
He had committed three errors in a game in 2017 when was playing for Detroit.
Castellanos told Bohm that game would make him better. He was right:
Mickey Moniak was at the NLCS, has watched every Phillies playoff game, and has been "hyping up" the day care in their group chat.
“I’m definitely invested. I’ve been a Phillie for basically my whole career. I’m pulling for them just as hard as anybody":
Stubbs: “We’ve been doing this all year. We just don’t give a shit. No matter what time of the game it is, the beginning or the end, we play every out. I don’t think anybody felt any other sort of way other than: "Ok, time to go score five runs, because we gave up five.”
Castellanos: “At one point I was like, 'I’m pretty close to home.' Just doing anything I can to get the pitcher to focus on me instead of the hitter. If they’re going to give me all of that room, why not?”
Harper, when asked about making a young fan's night, emphasized that this was their last regular season game.
"Not many of these people can afford tickets to see a postseason game."
"They might see me for the last time this year, and I don't like that."
When Orion Kerkering was seven, his father took him to Game 1 of the 2008 World Series. He saw Chase Utley hit a HR, Cole Hamels toss seven innings, and Brad Lidge get a two-strikeout save.
15 years later, Kerkering could help the Phillies in the playoffs
Whit Merrifield on why he came to Philly:
“The reputation of this team and clubhouse gets around. To be a part of it was something I wanted to do. Watching playoff games in Philadelphia, I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to see what the Bank was like during the playoffs.”
Ranger Suárez watched Ricardo Pinto's four-inning save from the dugout last night and was filled with pride.
They met at the Phillies academy in Venezuela as teenagers, lived together during ST in 2017-18 & have stayed close ever since.
“He’s my brother"
This morning, Bryce Harper gave Cristian Pache a hug. Kyle Schwarber gave him a pat on the back. They told him they were there for him, and to keep his head up.
Pache hadn't felt that support from other teams. It reinforced that Philly is the right fit:
Rhys Hoskins expects his first AB to be emotional
“I’m kind of a crier. I’ll probably cry at some point today. I think it just tells you about the energy and emotion I’ve been able to grab from this place.
“Hopefully they don’t have to stop the game because I’m crying too much”
