BREAKING: Danielle Williams has thrown a perfect game! She retires all 21 Iowa Hawkeyes as
@NUSBcats
wins it 7-0. It’s the first perfect game for the Cats since 2005, and the first seven-inning perfecto since 1984.
Some personal news: I'm moving to New England!
I've accepted a job covering Dartmouth athletics and high school sports in New Hampshire and Vermont for the
@VNewsUV
. Very grateful to all those who have supported me, and excited to get my career started in such a beautiful area.
BREAKING: Mississippi State receives the No. 16 national seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host the early rounds this weekend. The Bulldogs host Alabama State in the first round, with Georgia Tech and Middle Tennessee also coming to Starkville.
Mississippi State men’s tennis will find out its NCAA Tournament fate at the top of the hour. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 16 last week and are on the bubble to host the first two rounds.
The 🐐 has thrown a NO-HITTER!
@catosterman
tosses the first no-no in
@AUProSports
history as her team defeats Team Hayward 6-1. Another incredible performance from the veteran.
Mississippi State softball adds LSU pitcher Raelin Chaffin in the transfer portal, per her instagram. Chaffin has a career 2.93 ERA in 198 innings over three seasons with the Tigers.
Nice pickup for the Bulldogs, who need to replace ace Aspen Wesley.
Good morning everyone! A Chicago team has a chance to win a championship today. If you call yourself a sports fan in this city, I expect you to be watching.
Let’s get it
@chicagosky
!!!
If you're affiliated with Northwestern in any way, and you're not fully invested in this
@NUSBcats
team, I truly don't know what to tell you at this point.
So excited to continue following their journey in the Supers!
I'm excited to announce that today is my first day as the new Mississippi State athletics beat reporter for the
@CDispatch
.
Can't wait to get started, just in time for football season. Please send tips, story ideas and Starkville recs to brosenberg (at) cdispatch (dot) com.
The Mid Vermont Christian School girls basketball team pulled out of the Vermont Division IV state tournament due to a refusal to compete against a team with a transgender student-athlete.
Chris Lemonis on setting up his weekend pitching staff: "TBD has been a hell of a player for us over the years. Everybody's excited when they see that."
Life update: This will be my first week as a (remote) politics intern with
@voxdotcom
! I'll be writing newsletters, aggregations and reported explainers about the 2020 election and the biggest news stories in Washington. Looking forward to getting started!
Some personal news: I'll be covering the
@Official_CCBL
this summer as an intern with the
@capecodtimes
! Very excited to write about the best sport in the world in such a cool and historic setting. Can't wait to get started!
More from Lemonis: "Not one of those kids who got kicked out was aggressive. They didn't come in aggressive. Nobody started a fight. They were on the field. They were coming off the field to congratulate their teammate, and my entire lineup gets taken out?"
Every so often, I come across a story that reminds me why I love journalism. Meli Resendiz has been an equipment manager at NU for 30 years, and it's clear she's touched the lives of everyone she's worked with. Here's her story, my latest for
@thedailynu
:
Dear Danielle, Jordyn, Skyler, Maeve and Nikki,
Thank you for your five-year investment to
@NUSBcats
and for giving your all every game. You've left this program better than you found it and were some of the most fun athletes I've ever covered and rooted for.
I know everyone is probably watching basketball, but Angela Zedak just threw out a runner at home to send
@NUSBcats
and Missouri to the 9th. Instant classic in Columbia.
So long, Drysdale. Beyond grateful to
@NUSBcats
for taking in this overeager freshman who was barely aware of softball and turning me into a big fan of the sport and a much more confident reporter.
Thanks for all the memories. Looking forward to being back as a fan.
Ending my hiatus to say that today is my first day as sports editor for
@thedailynu
.
While there may not be games, there will always be sports stories, and we're going to tell as many of them as possible. Give
@DailyNU_Sports
a follow for all the latest.
A career update: Today is my last day at the Valley News.
I've enjoyed my time covering Dartmouth and the Upper Valley sports scene for nearly two years. It's a beautiful place with great people, and gave me a good platform to start my professional journalism career.
They were opponents in the Olympics, but they'll be teammates for life — and they've been teammates for the first two weeks in
@AUProSports
.
Had a great time talking with
@chiddy3
and
@nniiiss_
for this one! For
@SoftbalAmerica
:
In each of
@MorganNewport18
's five years with
@NUSBcats
, she's had a different primary role. And now, she's putting together her best season yet.
Enjoyed writing this profile on Newport ahead of her Senior Weekend. My final feature for
@thedailynu
:
Nowhere I’d rather be for my final game as a student journalist.
More sappiness to come later, but for now, we’ve got a rather important game to play. Regular-season finale between
@NUSBcats
and Nebraska in 20 minutes.
So this is it — my 189th and final byline for
@thedailynu
. I'm eternally thankful to everyone I met in this fantastic newsroom for helping shape who I am both as an individual and a journalist.
And to
@NUSBcats
, I tried to sum up here what this all has meant to me.
Why is
@DartmouthWBB
playing a Wednesday December matinee at No. 13 Iowa tomorrow? So Big Green senior
@emkoch34
can play in front of her family, friends and hometown fans.
I’ve had a great first couple of days here in DC with
@medillonthehill
! I’ll be covering education in our nation’s capital for the next few months, so follow along as I trade in sports for politics this quarter.
I talked with several former Northwestern athletes who are now medical professionals on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis, and how their sports experience is helping them in this more important battle. Very excited to share my latest for
@thedailynu
:
BREAKING: Northwestern is in the tournament! The Wildcats will play No. 14 seed Kentucky in Lexington in their first-round game on Friday at 11 a.m. CT.
Life update: I'll be spending Winter Quarter in Washington, D.C. reporting on government and politics for
@medillonthehill
! Very excited to try my hand at political reporting during this critical moment in history.
So, I tested positive for Covid this morning. I'm vaccinated and boosted, and it feels like a bad cold. I hope to be back to covering games in a week or so.
I'll be working remotely in the meantime. Looking forward to giving you all high school and Dartmouth updates again soon.
Quick life update: this was my last week interning with
@voxdotcom
. I'm incredibly grateful to have worked with so many outstanding reporters and editors, even though we never met in person.
Brief bit of personal news: throughout the 2020
@NCAAsoftball
season, I'll be working as a freelance reporter for
@SoftbalAmerica
! I'll be writing weekly news features and player profiles on the Big Ten and ACC. Can't wait to get started!
I've had the honor and privilege of building relationships with this program and telling its story. This is different than any experience I've had as a sports fan. This is personal.
I’m honored to receive a first place award from the
@MPAnewspapers
Association Better Newspaper Contest in the Sports News Story division! Thanks to everyone who’s helped support me, and I’m excited for Year Two on the Mississippi State beat.
I know my job for the better part of four years was to come up with words about what this team is doing, but I'm pretty much at a loss for them now. What a game. What a win.
Truly honored to be named a finalist. New Hampshire may be a small state, but it's got a strong local sports scene with some fantastic writers.
Great to see several of my friends, peers and mentors as finalists in other states as well. Congrats to all!
With that, Kate and Caryl Drohan become the all-time winningest coaches in program history. And they do it at the field named for the coach they just surpassed, Sharon J. Drysdale. Very, very cool.
The ascent is complete. The Third Golden Age is here. The Northwestern Wildcats are going to the Women’s College World Series.
THIS ENTIRE TEAM IS MADE UP OF HEROES. GO CATS BABY
Odicci Alexander is a treasure and it will be an absolute privilege to watch her compete in Oklahoma City. This is huge for mid-majors everywhere.
#RoadToWCWS
The Cape League had 71 — yes, 71 — MLB Draft selections this year out of just 160 players. I talked to some of them! My first of the summer for the
@capecodtimes
:
(This story also includes a quote from a current major leaguer so you should check it out)
The Sky, Red Stars and Bandits all made the playoffs.
Chicago has more than five professional teams. Pay attention to the women's teams — who are winning a lot more than the men right now.
FINAL (5): Mississippi State 9, Tennessee 1.
The game-ending run comes home on a passed ball, and the Bulldogs run-rule the No. 4 Volunteers in the series opener. They're 29-10 overall, 9-7 SEC. The series continues tomorrow at 2:30.
Says a lot about the health of this program that in an era when transferring is easier than ever, all five of Northwestern's senior starters are staying for their extra year.
Can't wait to watch these remarkable Cats make another run toward OKC!
I was supposed to cover the
@OfficialCCBL
in the summer of 2020 as a
@capecodtimes
intern. Of course, there was no baseball that summer, and I did the internship remotely from California.
So glad to finally experience the magic of the Cape League this evening.
While many
@MiLB
teams put promotions above the game itself, the
@IowaCubs
keep the focus on baseball. I dove into why they like it that way during last week's
@MedillSchool
explores trip.
Honored and excited to have this published in the
@DMRegister
:
With Michigan’s loss earlier today, the Wildcats are the last remaining unbeaten in the Big Ten. (Sound familiar?)
NU will go for its first 6-0 start in program history in just a bit.
In mid-December,
@crichqb
had just finished his high school football career, and his future was uncertain. By early January, he was taking classes at Northwestern and practicing with the team.
Very excited to share his story, my latest for
@thedailynu
:
It’s Senior Day for Northwestern, and it’s Senior Day for me as well. So excited and grateful to be back in a press box again for the first time in nearly 10 months.
NU and Illinois for the Hat, coming up in an hour.
He throws from three different arm slots, is at his fourth school in as many years and feels like he can pitch every day. It took a lot for
@schuelke_cam
to reach this point, but he's now one of the most trusted arms in Mississippi State's bullpen.
Quick life update: I now have a college softball newsletter! Subscribe to Covering the Bases to receive weekly news, analysis and commentary on all the biggest storylines across the sport all season long!
Did
@sophia_scanlan
and I actually write over 1,000 words on
@NUSBcats
fall ball? Why yes, yes we did. Check out our notebook to catch up on everything happening around the team!
That will do it for Northwestern's season, and that will do it for a fun, fulfilling and rewarding part of my college experience.
Thanks to all of you, as always, for following along.
I've been sitting on this story since hearing about it on an
@NUSBcats
broadcast in March. Really glad I got to finally follow up on it! Sabrina was one of my favorite players to cover, and she got to play internationally for Israel this summer:
Northwestern has always talked openly about its goal of getting to Oklahoma City. But this year, the Wildcats have the pieces in place to actually make that happen. My column, on why NU should be thinking big:
Something to keep an eye on as
@NUSBcats
returns to action today: Kate Drohan is sitting at 634 wins as NU's head coach since 2002, six behind her friend and mentor Sharon Drysdale.
Should the Cats sweep the weekend (no easy task), Drohan would tie Drysdale at 640 career wins.
After two years away from coaching,
@T_MacDonnell
is back on the bench for a second stint leading the Woodstock girls basketball team. A Hartford High math teacher, MacDonnell will coach against some of his students when the rivals meet on Saturday.
THREAD: It was truly an honor and privilege to tell the story of this
@NUSBcats
team. It was a storybook season for the program, and I'm very grateful to have been a part of it.
Surprised and honored to receive this award. Thanks to everyone at
@NSMASportsMedia
and congrats to all the other winners! Looking forward to meeting you in June.
Northwestern will face Auburn, Florida, Oregon, Long Beach State and Washington next February in Cathedral City. That’s a gauntlet, but it’s the type of non conference schedule that will earn the Wildcats respect from the committee in May.
What a gutsy win for the Wildcats. Danielle Williams silences a very good lineup, and four runs is a LOT against Beaubien and Michigan. Absolutely huge to take the opener.
The Cats' scoreless innings streak ends at 23 on the final play of the game, but Northwestern is 4-0 for the first time since 2008. That also happens to be the year of NU's last Big Ten title.
For the Class of 2021,
@NUFBFamily
was:
- 29-19 overall, 22-12 Big Ten
- 17-6 vs. the Big Ten West
- 3-0 in bowl games
- 2 division titles
And that's even including the 3-9 season in 2019. Pretty darn good.
This group had its best returning pitcher and the starting second baseman miss the entire season. Not to mention replacing so many core players and half the starting lineup from last year. And they still found a way.
Proud as ever to be a fan of this program.
My takeaways from
#B1GMediaDays
:
1. Pat Fitzgerald sure knows how to have fun with the media.
2. Jared Thomas is a really impressive young man.
3. Northwestern is underhyped yet again, and is using that as motivation. This should be another fun season.
