This version of Trae Young we've seen the past few weeks is a top-10 player in the league. He still gives you the elite scoring and distribution with a 28/10 night, but he's continued to be a menace on defense too even as the rest of the Hawks defense sags.

Chandler Parsons, who played for the Hawks and former head coach Lloyd Pierce in 2019-20, spoke about the contrast between Pierce's firing to Nate McMillan's as well as Trae Young's involvement. He had some rather pointed criticism of Pierce's coaching.

The biggest criticism around the Hawks FO is how low the rest of the NBA sees them. Inexperience and disappointing team results. Reactive moves, extending and dumping salary (Huerter, Collins, etc). They simply haven't earned the benefit of the doubt with the Risacher pick.

If the Hawks and Dejounte Murray agreed on an extension prior to 2024, his next salary can't be more than 140% of this year's salary. His max contract would look like: 2024-25: $24.8M 2025-26: $26.8M 2026-27: $28.8M 2027-28: $30.8M $111.1M total. A huge bargain.

One of the biggest reasons for the Hawks going from 8 games below .500 to 4 games over during the second half of the season has been Clint Capela's endless hustle. Capela at 100% health is the Hawks' second most important player.

Trae Young was vintage Trae Young tonight, stringing double teams along to find the right pass and taking advantage of mismatches. The huge shot making down the stretch from he and Dejounte is exactly why this duo was assembled.

Four game balls: Clint Capela for 21 rebounds and 8 (!) rebounds. Saddiq Bey for 17 big points off the bench. Jalen Johnson for flashes of freakish play with a 10/7/3 night in just 14 mins. Onyeka Okongwu with 4 (!) blocks in 20 mins. All unsung heroes who stepped up tonight

Jalen Johnson is a force. All he's needed is consistent playing time to work through the occasional errant play. But the Hawks haven't had a disruptive perimeter player like him in a long time. His one man fast breaks are a joy to watch (but probably a terror for opponents).

The Dejounte Murray trade is rumored to expand to include the Pels sending JV to the Wizards in a S&T. In that scenario, it would be nice to get Tyus Jones in a S&T to back up Trae. Career-high 12 PPG, 41% 3P% and an insane 7:1 AST:TO ratio last season. A true floor general.

Trae Young is the best lob thrower on the Hawks (and the best lob thrower in the league), but Jalen Johnson might honestly be second best on the team. Once Trae draws two off a middle PnR, Jalen grabs and goes and finds OO for the lob. It helps that Kevin Love is frozen solid.

Dejounte Murray is getting more catch-and-shoot opportunities than ever playing next to Trae Young. He’s hitting 53% eFG% and over 36% from three on those so far this year on a career high volume. These are the little things that have to continue for the pairing to flourish.

The glass half full argument for Risacher: 6'10 two-way SF who can defend POA Doesn't need the ball = good fit with Trae 18 y/o on a previous bad French team playing a prominent role Won't be an initiator, but there is some connective passer upside (haters will call it cope)

Silver linings: No one gave the Hawks any chance at this series. But they punched back for 5.5 games after a horrible first half of Game 1. Trae had his star moments and the DJ addition helped when the offense was bogged down. Year 2 of that pair should fit more seamlessly.
