OFFICIALLY DONE!! Cleaned the first load of seed this morning! Few hiccups but think we are ready to rock n roll! Been a lot of work but thankful to be done and proud of the finished project!
Very thankful to my wife for her support during this whole project.
My wife is in CO for 4.5 days for a wedding for a lifelong friend. Been a solo dad with a 4, 2, and 8 mo old (with help from my mother in law). Couple things I've learned so far:
1) Stay at home mom's are amazing and they have the toughest job on the planet. Not up for debate.
There are unlimited opportunities in Ag if you’re willing to do something different besides raising corn and beans the same way we have for the last 30 years.
Agriculture is a relationship industry.
I would also argue that there is no other industry more heavily influenced by relationships than agriculture.
So hard to articulate this to people who are not familiar
Ever take a look at the Ag industry and feel like as a whole the hours and money invested spent isn’t worth the return? I look at my grandpa and dad and the long hard hours they put in along with the financial risk, is it worth it? Both were successful but at what cost?
Just talked with a guy who recently sold his business and is retiring. His words of wisdom were to grow and automate as much as you can do by yourself and to stay away from employees. Thoughts?
Built 4 ladder cages for hopper bins. Company wanted $4800 + freight for factory built. Have less than $800 in metal and paint into them. That is a large markup on labor!
If you only had 80 acres of land to make a living on for your family, what would you do? (Can’t sell it or develop it, have to be something with agriculture)
Anyone have two pickups? One dedicated for work and one as a nicer family pickup? Current pickup either needs to get saved and turned into a family driver or it’s gonna get run til it dies.
Not gonna lie this turned out pretty dope and better than I imagined! Pivots so smoothly you can push it with one hand. Just don’t ask me how much I spent on the caster wheels 😂🤦♂️

Good land costs 1X..... SOLD!!!!! $3.47+ million or $29,600/acre; offered choice; buyer took both tracts; auction over; Summit Pipeline easement on both tracts. Good sale by Zomer Auction.
Bought some rye from an old boy last year. Sent a check. 4 months still hadn’t cashed it. Called him to see what was up.
“Oh I got a whole pile of grain checks on my desk, not sure what to do with them.” 😂
Not sure what the lesson is here but I always chuckle at that.
2) I definitely take for granted all my wife does.
3) Parenting is really hard.
4) Parenting is really rewarding and a lot of fun.
5) Being a dad is so much fun.
I am unbelievably blessed in my life and have so much to be thankful for. Has been a good reminder of that.
First year in business I bought and cleaned about 5 loads of rye and was so worried I wouldn’t get them sold I ended up selling them at a loss.
I bought 20 loads today and didn’t think twice
Always crazy to look back and see how much your perspective can change in a short time
Is it worth it to pay down debt early with rates being so cheap? Or is it better to keep cash and invest it back into business or a similar investment?
Common theme in agriculture:
I don’t like the rules and how the game is played, so I will get mad and complain loudly!
Every other sector of business:
I either have to change the rules or change the game.
Why don’t we have the latter mentality in Ag?
Need some help AgTwitter. Business is very seasonal, what else could I run through this place?
Have thought about putting a hammer mill in and grinding corn. Open to any and all ideas!
Farm sold in Deuel County today for $10,100/acre. If you figure just tillable acres it is pushing $11,000/acre. Buyer was an investor.
I would guess comparable rents for that quality of ground is $200-$250ish (maybe).
So yea, there’s that!
If you order hopper bins, don’t be like me and forget to order them with vents 🤦♂️
Side note: Old man can still lay down a pretty good bead 40’ in the air
How I negotiate freight with good companies and owners:
Me: What do you need for this load?
Them: $ X/load
Me: Sounds good!!
If you find good guys in the trucking business, just pay them fair rates. Have my core group of guys I work with and will go to bat for them all.
Would it be possible to turn the average 1500-2000 acre Midwest corn/soybean rotation into a highly intensive cattle grazing operation? Can it be done? And if it can is it worth it?
Closing out 2023 and looking back at some numbers. In our first 3 years since building my seed plant, have cleaned a little over 500k bu through. Pretty crazy to me!
Hoping we can hit 1 million soon!
Big day on Wednesday, we welcomed second kiddo into the world!

Momma and baby are doing great! Feeling pretty overwhelmed but so thankful and blessed to now have a family of 4!
365 days a year I’m in and out of payloaders, tractors, trucks,Jeep Wrangler. My knees and hips are constant pain. The other day I drove a mini van and it was the most delightful thing I’ve ever got in and out of.
Neighbor had a hog barn go down last night. While not fun it is always cool to see the agriculture community rally and drop everything. Makes a guy proud to live in a small town and work in agriculture
How does everyone deal with being bored at their job/career? Just turned 29 but have been feeling this for awhile. Curious to what everyone does to combat it.
I follow a lot of really cool and successful real estate people on here.
And the more I follow them the more I realize the only real estate I want to own is my house and some farmland.
Closed on a sale today for some oats with a new customer. Cold called him and have been following up with him for the last 3 months.
Those ones feel a little sweeter!!
Loaded the first truck today in the loading dock. Thankfully everything worked as it should! First load of rye headed out the door with
@hellbenthagen
and the crew 👍
Customer called me yesterday and told me he grazed 99 cows on 53 acres of cover crop mix following a small grain for 44 days! Will chalk that up as a win!!
How can this still be a thing?
If paid for contractually should have to hold up on their end of the deal.
What’s the point of prepaying if it doesn’t help your customers?

I “locked in” Roundup with
#HeftySeed
in August, had it paid for.
I’m now told the price was pulled & my price will be spot when it’s delivered. No delivery date yet.
#heftySeed
has no Roundup they have no price.
C’mon
@darrenhefty
@brianhefty
do better
When I was little always wished I lived in the “I” states so we could just grow corn and beans. As I get older I’m more and more thankful to live where we can grow small grains and livestock is still a big part of operations!
Ag Producers
What do you think you end up actually earning on a $/hr basis?
What SHOULD you be making on a $/hr basis for all your effort and headaches?
How far off are those numbers?
Broker lied to driver about weight.
Told driver the real weight and instantly knew he would lose money on load.
Told me he couldn’t take it and drove off.
Not even mad, kudos to you for knowing your numbers man!
With the addition of our seed plant we are looking to expand our business! If you are looking for another supplier of small grains, custom cleaning, or cover crop mixes, give us a call at 605-956-1389!
Got the dock leveler welded on today! Need to prime and paint and then this project is officially done! Also included a pic of the drain. 1.5” rain and it was bone dry, so it must work thankfully!
Probably the nicest gravity wagon in Deuel County!! (And most expensive 😂)
30k lb readout should make weighing out partial loads way quicker and faster.
Good thing I got it done after the big rush this spring 🤦♂️
Missing kids ball games? Not home for supper most nights? Strained family relationships? Then I look at other industries and see better margins and a more balanced work and home life. Makes a guy wonder how Ag got put into this position in the first place.
