A cattle feeder. A retired custom silage cutter. And a retired truck driver. Destroying the Ol Murley place one hoof print at a time. Amateur tractor collector.
We have a young man that helps on our place that turns 18 this weekend. He has his own place to live.Has a GED.Has a nice pickup.Has10 calves. And he showed up to work this morning at 5:30 cause he knows it’s a big day. He don’t HAVE to be here til 8. That’s how you get somewhere
22 years ago at this time of the afternoon my house was burning. My 4450 was burning. A payloader was on fire. Pickups were burning. The loading chute was on fire. 2 of us were waiting for ambulances.1 of us lived. Anniversaries of shit sucks. I think I’ll have a beer or two.
Not that I really expect anyone to care. And I get made fun of plenty which I’m perfectly ok with. But yesterday marked 66 days alcohol free as well as a loss of 42 pounds. No apps. No scams. No help. Just stubbornness. It’s almost as addicting as the 12 pack of Budlight was.
Hired a new guy 3 weeks ago. Shows up on time. Have to tell him to go home at night. Slow and careful. Doesn’t destroy shit. Excellent around cattle. I couldn’t be happier.
So I’ve made a difficult decision but for the sake of my daughter and our cattle feeding operation I’m going to call last season the end of custom chopping. It’s been 22 falls of custom work. It’s time to pass on the torch. I’m keeping my 7980 to chop our own. End of an era.
You think you’re a hell of a man? I just finished a silage pile for an 88 year old man who got out of a 4240 John Deere, walked over to me with his cowboy hat pulled down , shook my hand and said “Send me the bill,I’ll see ya next year”……
Not trying to be a girl. Or a bathroom creep. 31 waist jeans. A pile of 38s I spose I should keep if I fail. 115 days without alcohol. Not sharing for the attention. Yes I’m proud of myself. But when you decide to do something it’s not that hard. If I can do it anyone can.
Farming with ERTL equipment was so much more fun. Mom and Dad paid the land payment or the rent. The fuel man was never on your ass. Maintenance was a breeze. And if you broke something you waited around till Christmas for a new one!!
I quit at 5:30 today so I could load a horse that was born in 1999 in a trailer that was built in 1995 pulled behind a pickup made in 1997 and go to town so a girl that was born in 2017 could do the barrels and poles...... Yes I know how this works......Please send prayers.....
Just popped the top on the first beer. To the “Omg he’s drinking a beer in equipment people” you can fuck off. Your welcome to come follow me around for a day. If you were here you wouldn’t wait this long. To the rest of you. Happy Sunday.
She turned 6 this week.Been with me for 13 hours, moving cows home, stuffing equipment in sheds, getting rained on and now 500 miles before daylight. Only complaint she’s had was not being able to stand up to pee like me.
I paid off my feedlot this morning.......This is what it used to look like..... Unfortunately after 2019 it no longer does..... I feel like I just paid off my dream house or shop or whatever your dream is the day after a F5 tornado takes it....
#Heavysigh
Old man syndrome at its highest. Just walked over to get in my pickup to go check cows. It’s still running..... Since this morning when I checked cows.......🤦♂️
County pulls shoulders up on road. FedEx driver leaving here goes in ditch. Wrecker guy drives into my truck driver on his way to work.Fucks up his vehicle. Hired man in jail cause he don’t know how to properly day drink. Joe Diffee comes to mind. And most people just want a rain.
I’ve driven a lot of shit. Never an R model Mack. So I have no idea how they shift. And the people that say you never have to double clutch maybe have never been off a road with a truck. Looks like she’s doing good to me and she can drive it however she feels like it.
Local grocery store called. Trying to line up grocery customers with people that have beef or pork to sell. Said yes they will lose sales. But they aren’t willing to be salesman for the packers at these prices.
Not a heated shop. Ain’t paid for. Seems like it never will be. Been a day or 2 I barely made the payment. Whatever it cost. Days like today were worth every penny. Wish it was bigger.
I don’t know how to pay the highest cash rents and run the latest equipment to produce the best crops. I do know how to take some labor, opportunity and some old equipment and keep a light calf alive. I’m gonna try to produce value with what is offered to me and what I know.
I just want to do a shout out to the guys busting their asses trying to save baby calves.Between snow, cold and mud, been a hell of a spring for those guys. Keep up the fight! Warmer days and green grass are another day closer.
Not looking for sympathy,so I wasn’t gonna say anything. But. 22 years ago today I lost my dad.He loved numbers and office work.I’ve always been a worker. Always think what we could have done together if we could have combined our forces.Just things I think of on May 1 every year
I’ve been alcohol free for 11 or 12 days now. I said I was going to drink more water and less beer. I don’t feel any better. I don’t have any more energy. I’ve maybe lost like 2 pounds. I’m starting to think the people that don’t drink and say they feel great are liars....
I'm no stranger to life happening fast. Today was another reminder. Good ol friend stopped during chores this morning. We had morning beers together and a great visit and laugh. 2 hours later he left this earth from a heart attack. 61 yrs old. Forever miss you my friend 🍻🍻
Young fella that works here had a friend and a brother fly over today. It’s not perfect. But considering it was a pasture 12 years ago and nothing seems to come easy here, I’m kinda proud of it.
Just pulled into 400 acres of a forage mix. Might not mean much to a lot of you, but first fall in my life I pulled into someone else’s field with a fleet of paid for silage equipment.
When I was about his age I was always excited to ride with the old truckers that hauled my dads pairs to pasture. Giving a customers son a ride today. Guess it’s the cycle of life. Thankfully I’m not old!!
Made it home with yesterday’s purchase. Guy that owned it turns 86 tomorrow. Hopefully i can stay in business and it does me half as much good as it did him. 1968 Powershift.
For those of us that have appreciation for the sound of a 31 yr old Big Cam Cummins vs the sound of a plastic pile of shit that won’t do a proper regen.
You fuckers don’t be pissing this rally away on new pickups, vacation homes and shops this time. Save a little for when the white pickups and the landlords take it.......
Celebrity life of a cattle feeder: Driving a $1000 pickup to the bank with a million dollars worth of checks and wondering how you can stop the overdraft and buy a tank of gas.......
Back to feeding in the dark. Cause what’s that saying? Only a white man would cut a foot off the bottom of the blanket and sew it to the top of the blanket and think he had a longer blanket.
I’ll tell you when this country went to shit........ Nobody was offended by every little piece of history when we had foot operated dimmer switches.....
Kinda a sad day today, we had to put down a cow that started my wife’s cow herd. She raised 11 calves. Found her in the mud one summer day at the bottom of a feedlot pen out of a fat heifer. She was the lead cow and always one of the first to calf. You will be missed Elsie.
Next silage cutting season there will be an extra $100 charge for every field that I only open up for the combine. And a $500 charge if you ride with me to show me how to do it.
Losing a silage cutting customer due to “the times”. Not a big one. But to me they are all important. We usually use their yard to headquarter out of when in the area. I asked if we could still park there. He said. “Jon I would feel very outed if you didn’t”. Heavy sigh.....
Cows got a gate down. Got in my neighbors bean field. I called my neighbor. Told him. “Jon that shit happens. I’m headed to river and I don’t much give a shit about beans today”….
For those of you that someday want to run a small business or be self employed. Here is a few tips. Answer your phone. Work more than 8 hours a day. Return messages.
10 below. A fed truck started. A tractor started. 2 payloaders started. A semi started and is on the road. A kid got delivered to school on time. And No cattle are fed because we are waiting for I pads to update. I may burn this place to the ground today for fun.
Some days I guess I probably deserve to be broke. New to me tractor. 1959 730 Diesel with factory electric start and dual hydraulics. I wanted one since I was in the 6th grade. Some of you won’t understand. But if you know you know.
I’m just gonna come clean about something. I give 0 fucks about what the rest of you think, so don’t @ me. But to be right down and truthful. I listen to Nickelback.
5:20 am text of school delays. Just ain’t the same as sitting at a kitchen table around a battery powered AM radio listening to WNAX while they named off a hundred schools hoping they said your school.
Drank enough beer this weekend to kill a college kid, still did 13 hours of work a day in January, and these kids are waiting around for someone to give them some land to farm. Moral of the story is get after it. Don’t be a pussy. Don’t @ me if you’re offended by this tweet.
I was having a pretty good day today until i opened up my Twitter or X or whatever we call this place. Now im convinced im going broke too. You people are depressing.
If I was a calf and I didn’t know who my dad was. And I missed my mom and I’m on some assholes place with a bunch of new asshole friends I’ve never seen before and I was feeling kinda down on my luck, I think I’d eat it.
Break out the dirt scrapers and the D9 and call the bunk pouring crew!!! If Kooper Skip Deal is like her mama we gonna need more pens to feed cattle!!!!
Quitting. A thread. Anything else in the world you quit a job and nobody cares. Life changes. People change. I’ve been somewhat scrutinized for quitting my silage cutting business. “There’s more to the story”. So…
