Often when a team gets hot, coaches & players become more superstitious. For the Aztecs, freshman Miles Byrd may be one of the team’s good luck charms. Byrd doesn’t play yet but he’s always on camera, cheering on the team. He’s also a terrific young player with a bright future.

San Diego State has been a nightmare so far for Charleston, Furman & Alabama plus CBS analysts Seth Davis & Clark Kellogg. The Aztecs have beaten those teams in the NCAA Tournament while Seth & Clark have always picked vs. SDSU. Maybe it’s time they gave the Aztecs some respect.

When Lamont Butler was a freshman, Aztec fans saw his enormous potential. Now, as a junior, the world is seeing the talented Butler as one of the top 2-way guards in the country. Sunday, he hit 8/11 FGs, 2/2 3’s & had 18 points to help SDSU beat Creighton & earn a Final 4 berth.

In 5 years as the San Diego State men’s basketball coach, Brian Dutcher has a record of 119-40, won 2 MWC regular season titles & 2 MWC tourney titles. His Aztecs have played in 3 NCAA tourneys, losing in the first round each time. Many D1 schools wish their teams were that good.

When UC Irvine took a 5-point lead over SDSU with :58 left Saturday, a bunch of Aztec fans headed toward the exists, expecting a loss. But this year’s Aztecs don’t quit & won a 4th game that they could have easily lost. Believing you can win is often the fire to spark the W.

Never underestimate the Viejas Arena magic. San Diego State got a late steal & Micah Parrish’s tough layup in the final seconds to lift the Aztecs to a dramatic 63-62 win over UC Irvine on Saturday night. The Aztecs rallied from 7 down in the final 3 minutes to earn the win.

San Diego State’s Lamont Butler was slowed by a broken wrist this season & struggled some offensively. But the sophomore is a gifted point guard & should run the team with senior Trey Pulliam gone. Butler is an exceptional defender & should showcase his all-around game next year.

Jaedon LeDee had 34 points, including a go-ahead layup with :37 left in overtime, to go with 17 rebounds to help San Diego State rally past gutsy Washington 100-97 & claim the Continental Tire Main Event championship on Sunday night in Las Vegas. The Aztecs improved to 4-1.

Cali junior college basketball is often played at a high level. It provides a great opportunity for players who didn’t go the 4-year route to develop for 2 years, then move on. A lot of JC players earn scholarships to NAIA, D2 & D1 schools. Fact: JC is a win-win for many players.
