On this same day 2 years ago…
I received my first pay as a janitor.
It was a measly $61.
I remember saying to myself that day…
I’m gonna get a new pair of shoes.
But that was gonna cost me my entire salary and I’d just go back to being broke.
So instead I decided I was
5 days ago...I crossed 1,000 followers.
I did this without:
- Buying RTs
- Engagement groups
- Commenting 100 times daily
My secret: Learning to write well (and effectively)
Here's 7 tips to help make you a better writer
(And create content that doesn't get ignored)
Today’s my birthday!
However…
I don’t celebrate (my) birthdays.
Two reasons:
1. I didn’t do anything special to be born.
My parents literally did all the work.
They deserve all the praise.
2. Growing older is scary.
Not the way you think. Trust me.
Let me explain…
You have 3 vehicles:
• Time
• Money
• Knowledge
Use your time to acquire knowledge.
Use your knowledge to acquire money.
Use your money to buy back your time.
2 days ago I hit 1,300 followers.
And to celebrate…
I want to help 30 selected people…
- Gain clarity
- Create better content and
- Build effective systems for Twitter growth
You don’t have to pay me (It’s FREE)
Just like & comment with your favorite emoji and I’ll dm you.
I had an insane tweet idea last night.
Only problem was…
I was taking my shower at the time.
And unfortunately…I couldn’t note it down.
Result…I forgot.
But then…it left me with a question.
What do you do when you get ideas in the shower?
Want to write tweets that get noticed?
I broke down my Tweet Writing process that got me...
• A 2.3k+ engaged audience
• An overwhelming comment section
• 1.2M organic impressions in 89 days
To get it:
1. Like
2. Comment HIT
And I'll send it to you
(Your dm must be open)
Your favorite writers don't write better than you.
Or maybe they do.
But here's the thing...
They're not innately better than you.
They've just written for longer than you have.
Makes sense?
My next door neighbor is a scammer.
He makes $10k-$15k per month selling puppies on IG.
Only problem is…
The people who buy from him never get delivered
And the worst part is…
He’s not alone.
Getting a job after school is like winning a lottery.
You’ve gotta be lucky or
2 years ago my dad kicked me out.
I was dead broke and had to take up a job as a janitor.
I also live in a 3rd world country where…
Power outages are frequent and internet service is poor.
Yet I showed up for 7 months
And built a 2.1k+ audience.
Your excuses don’t move me.
You don't need 10k followers to monetize.
Just:
1) Get good at something
2) Talk about that 1 thing
3) Help few people (free)
4) Gather testimonials
5) Create your offer
6) Do outreach
7) Sell out
You don't need to be the expert.
You just need to be one step ahead.
Me: "I want to make my first $10k month in 2023."
My friends: "You're crazy. Do you want to rob a bank?"
My Twitter friends: "You should aim for $50k bro. You got this."
Not surprising I enjoy spending more time here on Twitter.
Invest your time wisely - in the right:
• Books
• Projects
• Business
• Information
• Relationships
If you desire success…
Not everyone/everything should be worthy of your time.
Just start!
Start writing
Start posting
Start building
Start networking
Start outreaching
And if you’ve already started…
Then keep going till you get there.
A friend of mine asked to see my Twitter account.
I showed him and his first reaction was…
“Bro!!! You’re not ashamed to tell the world you were once a janitor???”
- Nope. That’s my story and I’m owing it. It’s what makes me unique.
Lesson in there.
Your excuses are Valid!
• Broke
• Full time job
• Dad who abandoned you
• Poor or no internet connection
• Family that doesn’t support you
But the truth is…
Nothing good ever came out of excuses or complaints.
You’d be better off taking action.
(no matter how small)
You can create the life you want by building:
• skills
• systems
• leverage
• your body
• businesses
• relationships
And above all…
By building the right mindset.
5 things I did to improve my writing:
1. Studied Copywriting
2. Built a daily writing habit
3. Studied human psychology
4. Deconstructed great writing
5. Made friends with other writers
And the best part…I didn’t spend a dime.
As the internet is flooded with free resources.
Twitter is becoming so toxic these days.
Everyone's slowly becoming a "callout king"
You can't scroll past 3 tweets without some creator taking shots at others.
And you know what's even more disturbing?
It's the fact that most of them just wanna be trendy.
It does seem to be
STOP caring what people think!
The more you care…the more you:
• Procrastinate
• Second guess yourself
• Quit and remain stagnant
Care enough to do the right thing…
But don’t care too much that it slows you down.
Began creating on Twitter in January 2022.
What followed…
6 months of inconsistency and 341 followers.
Then I quit in June cause of zero growth.
However…
I managed to get back on Twitter in October.
And with 8 months of consistency…
We’ve hit 2,000 followers.
Grateful!
One of the fastest growing creators on Twitter:
Kieran Drew
He adds between 10-15k followers each month.
I spent the entire weekend studying his content and here are...
13 Content types he uses to engineer audience and business growth.
>>>A Thread 🧵<<<
Successful people focus on what they can do with the resources they have.
Unsuccessful people focus on what they can’t do with resources they don’t have.
You never lack resources.
You only lack resourcefulness
Think about George Ten.
Now ask yourself this…
If George woke up today and decided to no longer talk about copywriting
And started talking about say…
“How to get the perfect wife.”
Would you unfollow him?
The short answer is no. But why?
When it comes to building a brand
You can read a book and share what you learnt.
Or you can…
- read a book
- implement what you learn
- and share your personal experience.
That’s how you set yourself apart
And showcase your personality too.
(same goes with any other form of content)
Writing tip:
Don’t use longer phrases when they can be replaced with a single word.
For example:
• In order to → to
• Ways by which → ways
• Continues to be → remains
Good writing is concise.
You don’t need the most expensive program.
Start with these:
- YouTube
- 3 foundational books
- 3 to 6 months of practice
Takes time yeah but…
You just can’t be broke and busy too.
You think you’re just building a brand…
But in the process you:
• Acquire skills
• Grow your income
• Expand your network
• Become a better thinker
• Attract better opportunities
It’s more than just personal branding.
It’s a cheat code for self development.
You don’t need to fake your expertise to build a personal brand.
Instead…
• Find something that interests you
• Learn it and document the process
• Share your wins & losses with others
People don’t want some guru advice.
They want to follow your journey.
I spent my last penny to join a forex academy.
That was around April 2019.
Forex was basically on every lip at the time.
And I knew a couple of people who were making decent money from it.
So I decided to give it a try.
And after close to 6 months of trial and error
I
Writing well isn't enough to build a business.
You have to understand:
• Sales
• Marketing
• Cold outreach
• Funnels and offers
• Human Psychology
Don’t settle for learning how to write.
Learn how to build a profitable business too.
There will always be someone…
• Growing faster than you
• Earning higher than you
• Doing better than you
Stop comparing yourself to others.
Instead…thrive to be better than you were yesterday.
I’m at a low point.
Most days I’m confused.
I’ve got:
• Plans laid out
• Projects lined up
• Plenty things to do
Yet…nothing’s getting done.
I’ve not achieved anything significant this month.
And truly…
That’s just cause I haven’t done anything significant.
Except…
How to build a business 25 years ago:
• Start-up capital
• Licenses and permits
• Huge investment upfront
How to build a business today:
• Social media (Free)
• Google docs/Notion (Free)
• Landing page with carrd (Free)
Building a business has never been easier.
Delete these from your vocabulary:
- It’s too hard
- I can’t do this
- I quit / I give up
- I’ll do it tomorrow
- I’m not good enough
What you say, you believe.
And what you believe becomes your reality.
I must confess…
I’ve got an unfair advantage.
Before coming to Twitter…I was a ghostwriter.
I wrote music for upcoming artists.
And one skill I learnt back then which improved my Tweet writing is…
How to write a good punchline.
Think for a sec
Without a good punch…
Your content doesn’t suck.
Or maybe it does.
But here’s the thing. If you’re a small account…
Chances are you don’t have enough visibility.
But guess what?
There are people ready to push your content.
You just have to connect with them on the TL and in the dm’s.
2015: I wanted to be a professional footballer
2020: I wanted to be an accountant
2021: I worked as a janitor
2022: I started writing online
2023: I’m sure I’m on the right path
You don’t have to have it all figured out yet.
Just keep trying stuff until something sticks.
Showing up daily is hard!
Especially when you're not getting results.
To make it easier...
• Lower the stakes
• Stack small wins
• Gain momentum and scale
If you can't do 100 comments in a day...
Start with 25 and walk your way up.
2021 I worked as a janitor.
• 9 hours/day
• 6 days/week
• Monthly pay: $75
Last week I got paid $149...
To jump on a few calls and share my knowledge.
Tell me why you're not building your personal brand...I'll wait.
Waking up at 5am to work on your business is uncomfortable.
Going to the gym even when you don’t feel like it is uncomfortable.
Saying no to late nights and parties to read and study is uncomfortable.
But hey!
You can’t be comfortable
And grow at the same time.
Pick a side!
Working a 9-5 (or college) doesn’t stop you from:
- Writing tweets
- Acquiring a skill
- Creating an offer(s)
- Offering paid services
- Building digital products
You don’t need 24hours in a day to succeed.
You need a couple hours spread over a long period of time.
Writing is the greatest skill you can learn.
Why?
• It helps you calm your mind
• It is the foundation of all media
• It teaches you human psychology
• It helps you grab and monetize attention
• It ups your texting game and lands you dates.
Downside: 0
Upside: ∞
What you think is holding you back:
- Lack of time
- Lack of ideas
- Lack of money
What is actually holding you back:
- Lack of focus
- Lack of clarity
- Lack of discipline
Kill your distractions.
And create the life you want.
7 months of tweeting. 2k followers later.
My top 5 tips for growing on Twitter:
1. Share your stories
2. Support others unselfishly
3. Be valuable and entertaining
4. Engage more with accounts your size
5. Find 5-7 friends & support each other’s growth
Do these for 6-9 months
These past 2 weeks I’ve been called:
• fake
• boring
• scammer
And to be honest with you…It did hurt a little.
But guess what?
For each one of those comments…
I got 30-40 positive comments.
So yeah…
I’ll rather focus on those who love me than deal with ‘em haters.
I get a lot of people telling me…
“Bikenn you’re growing slow.”
And my answer is always…
“That’s because you’re comparing me to thoes paying for RTs and running weekly giveaways.”
The goal is not to build fast.
The goal is to build right and that…takes time.
Struggling to come up with what to write?
You're not alone.
I do struggle too sometimes.
But the thing is...
I don't let that stop me
And you shouldn't either.
You already have ideas.
And even if you don't...
You could always write about not having ideas.
(Like I just did)
Reading won’t make you a better writer.
Except you read with the intent of:
• Getting ideas
• Noticing patterns
• Stealing proven tactics
Stop reading with a consumer’s eye.
And start reading with a critic’s eye instead.
I never paid for any writing course.
Instead…
I published content everyday for the past 6months.
Trust me when I say…
You don’t need more writing advice.
You just need to commit to publishing daily and consistently.
97 days ago I started learning to write online.
Since then...I haven't spent a dime on any writing courses or programs
As the internet is flooded with tons of free resources.
Here are 7 insanely valuable resources from writing geniuses to get you started in just 3 minutes.
No one ever:
- lost 30lbs overnight
- Made $1,000,000 overnight
- Grew a 100k following overnight
It was always as a result of consistent daily efforts overtime.
So…
- Do the basics
- Do them every day
- Do them for a long period of time
That’s how you win.
The first sentence of your tweet should be:
• Easy to read
• Attention grabbing &
• Get your reader to read on
This sentence makes or breaks your post.
Think of this when next you sit to write a first sentence that’s 3 lines long.
Do you know the aim of your first sentence?
It's simple. Really simple.
It's aim is to grab your reader’s attention…
And nudge them to read your next sentence.
And to do this..
1) Start with a question (example above)
2) Make your first sentence ultra short.
Got it?
7 reasons why I write daily:
(And why you should too)
1) To get better
2) To gain clarity
3) To strengthen ideas
4) Because it’s hella fun
5) To deepen understanding
6) To bank good ideas for later use
7) To connect with link minded folks
What else would you add?
My life as a janitor:
• Pull myself out of bed
• Dread going to work each day
• Pray for closing hours to come by
My life as a writer:
• Excited to wake early
• Working for hours is fun
• Wish I had 24+ hours in a day
Nothing changed!
Except now…I’m doing what I love.
The biggest mistake I made when starting out…
Thinking I needed a huge following to share my unique perspective.
But guess what…
It’s your unique perspective that draws people to you.
It’s called “personal brand” for a reason.
Make it count!
Had a chat with a guy making $2.5k/mo.
And to think…
He had just 487 followers at the time.
His strategy?
100+ cold dms/day across 4 platforms.
His service: short form video editing.
Most times we think we need more knowledge.
When in reality all we need is 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
How to get better at anything:
- Practice today
- Practice tomorrow
- Practice every other day after
The more reps you put in, the better you get.
No way around it!
I closed my first coaching client ($149) over the weekend.
All I did:
• Had a genuine conversation
• Sought to understand their problem
• Repeated it to them to ensure I got it
• Offered my solution
• Stated my price
No hard selling. Just helping.
If you can you help someone:
- save time
- get rid of stress
- make more money
- Be happier or healthier
Then you can make money.
People don’t buy products and services.
They buy improvements or transformations.
You’re playing the branding game wrong.
Wanna know why?
You’re all over the place.
I used to be too.
Till a friend asked me this question…
And now…I ask you the same question…
If I consumed your content for 3-6 months…
What’s The ONE transformation I will experience?
There’s 1001 ways to do any one thing.
Some people grew to 1k by commenting 200 times daily.
Others (like me)…
Focused on writing threads and engaging content.
Everyone’s just sharing what worked for them…
Doesn’t mean you can’t do otherwise.
How to grow your personal brand (the right way)
• Give value
• Share your story
• Be consistent long enough
The goal is to build a raving fan base.
And not a bunch of people who don’t care about you (or what you do)
“I spent 2 hours writing that piece.”
Oh cool!
But trust me…
That’s not a proof of value.
No one cares how many hours you spent.
What matters…
Is it clear and concise?
Is it relevant to your reader?
Does it deliver on its promise?
If yes…then consider it valuable.
Stop engaging to get followers.
Instead…engage to:
• Have fun
• Build friendships
• Share your point of view
• Promote yourself respectfully
• Support your favorite creators
If you engage just to get followers…
You’d eventually quit when you don’t.
Today I’m going to embrace boredom for at least 45mins.
• No tv
• No gadgets
• No social media
Just me, my inner man and my thoughts.
What are you doing today?
Good morning.
Writing is a compounding skill.
You learn to write well...then you:
• Attract an audience
• Build a tribe or fan base
• Build connections & a great network
• Generate leads for your business
• Learn to persuade and sell
Learn to write well first & you can do anything.
