Victoria's first protected intersection is now fully functional at Albert Street and Lansdown Street. It will take riders some time to familiarise but it is sure to provide extra protection for riders on the busy route. Learn more about the project here:

New pop-up lanes were installed on Heidelberg Road in Melbourne just before Christmas so we took them for a spin. The bike lanes are generously sized and provide good separation from cars on a busy road. #BetterNormal

Actually, we think bike riders should be able to use the footpath. It's a safe option when paths and lanes aren't there. And we don't understand why we should stop riding because a bike path ends. If you were driving a car and the road suddenly ended, would you get out and push?

Check out this section of the new separated bike lanes on Peel Street in North Melbourne. While the narrowing in parts might not be ideal, the increased protection and separation from traffic is an improvement for people riding bikes.

In 2020, our bikes kept us pedalling to a #betternormal . Cities rapidly adapted their streets to make space for active transport and recreation. Infrastructure that previous took years, took weeks as new lanes popped up around our suburbs.

A bike alone does not carry high risk. It’s the external environment that creates the risk. For people who ride bikes, that risk is primarily created by a person driving a vehicle. The most effective way to reduce the risk for riders is to separate them from cars.
