This is St Mary Aldermary in London. It has a lovely coffee shop open nearly every day. It offers a calm space for anyone passing - you don't have to buy anything. It holds regular worship. It serves its community. This is what a church is, not a museum held in stasis.
Your chances of being followed home by 13 completely absurd yearling king penguin chicks are low... but never zero here in the
#Falklands
. Sound on to hear their siren song.
Michael Gove on end of lockdown: “it’s not a fixed point, it’s not an exact date on the calendar, it’s not like Easter”.
Do you want to tell him or shall I?

It's my final week working for
@churchofengland
. Others might have decided to tweet their favourite churches or cathedrals but I think I'll just keep on tweeting pictures of weird stuff in Church House. Including this 'key' which is, and I cannot stress this enough, a doorknob.
To compound their absurdity, these babies followed me so far that they lost their parents and started to freak out, so I had to lead them back. Nature is majestic etc.
Today I made it to Chaldon Church for the first time, to see what's been described as "perhaps the most interesting ancient wall-painting in England", this staggering 1170 damnation and salvation doom.

Things in the
#Falklands
that I continuously enjoy:
- penguins!
- clean air
- personal safety & very low crime
- uncrowded beaches
- low levels of consumerism
- doctor/dentist appointments always available
- varied social scene
- everyone waves hello to each other when driving ❤️
"I think your referendum went rather better than one of mine."
Foreign Secretary
@David_Cameron
addresses a community reception here in the
#Falklands
, remembering over ten years since the definitive Falklanders vote to remain part of the British family.
Things we don't have in the
#Falklands
:
- traffic lights
- escalators
- cabled internet; only satellite
- brand stores
- Google street view
- local online banking
- Indian or Chinese takeaways
- Amazon Prime
- home mail deliveries
- right to roam
What surprises you?
Today, the day before Liberation Day, it was a privilege to be at the unveiling of one of twelve new memorial benches commemorating the veterans of '82, and remembering all those who gave their lives to liberate the
#Falklands
.
One year ago today I woke up in the
#Falklands
for the very first time. Thank you to everyone who's followed along, shared memories and advice, and helped me enjoy getting to know the wonderful community here. No regrets.
Based on meetings this morning:
You are not lazy, you are exhausted.
You are not weak, you're ground down.
You are not grumpy, you are trying to process frustration that has no proper outlet.
You are not resisting change, you are trying to regain stability.
Be kind to yourself.
It's the last day of January and I've had a great month sharing life here in the
#Falklands
with you all. I've only been here 6 months so it was a chance for me to learn too. Most popular post (apart from laundry 🤷♀️) was on pubs! Thank you all for your engagement and support.
This
#FolkloreThursday
I give you a bit of modern whimsy: Newcastle's vampire rabbit. She was put up in 1901 facing the east end of
@stnicnewcastle
and there she's been ever since. Nobody knows why.
Heartbreaking to watch, but no matter the destruction the spirit of what it means to be a cathedral will survive. The spire collapsed
@LincsCathedral
& was rebuilt;
@CovCathedral
was bombed & came back stronger.
@engcathedrals
stand with you
#NotreDame
, you are still beautiful.
Good news:
@DCMS
has extended the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme for three years until 31 March 2025. This scheme gives grants to cover the cost of VAT on repairs to listed churches. Thank you
@HuddlestonNigel
for supporting this vital funding for heritage and communities.
This is the most ridiculous church organ I have ever seen. It is mounted on ELEPHANTS. Built in the Church of Our Saviour by the brothers Botzen between 1696-98. The brothers had a monopoly on organ building in Denmark, and boy did they go for it.
A good little challenge for all you church crawlers is to spot church monuments to women that don't contain any reference to a man - usually a husband or father. This rather wonderful example is in
@Spurriergate
York.
Deans, archdeacons, incumbents, churchwardens, PCC and Chapter members, church and cathedral administrators: I see you. I see your hopes and anxieties, I see the pressures you are under, the challenges you're managing on our behalf. Today
@Southwarkcathed
this artwork is for you.
St John the Baptist Little Missenden
@littlemchurch
is extraordinary. The original Saxon church, dated 975, is now the nave, with C13th aisles and a C15th wooden porch. Interpretation and conservation courtesy of a
@HeritageFundUK
grant. Open every day. What a treat.
I am in the UK for a flying visit - work and seeing family. Some good views from the flight here, which takes about 18 hours on a direct service on an Airbus provided through the Ministry of Defence. Here's my last view of Stanley for a short while...
My first trip to Christ Church Cathedral, the world's most southerly Anglican
#cathedral
. Designed by Arthur Blomfield, built 1890–92. It is the parish church of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the British Antarctic Territories. Biggest geographic parish ever?
I am once again drafting
@churchofengland
guidance on Covid, this time for 19 July onwards. People of the parishes, what do you need covered? Life events, singing, offering safe welcome, communion, catering, opening to visitors? What else?
When I moved the 8000 miles to the
#Falklands
back in August 2022, I kept a diary for my first month. Although I'm nervous about it, I decided to publish the first week of it on
@Medium
for any of you who might be interested in how that transition went.
If you're thinking 2023 might be predictable or dull, know that this time last year I had no thought of moving 8000 miles to the
#Falklands
, yet I did and it's been one of the best things I've ever done. Thank you all for your support this year. Happy
#NewYear2023
#NewYearsEve
.
I post a lot of wildlife and landscapes - they are one of the best things about living here in the
#Falklands
. But a few people have asked about life in the big City of Stanley. So this month I'll focus on the buildings and community here. Anything you want to see in particular?
I have been living in the
#Falklands
for a month. Thank you to everyone here who has made me so welcome. I expected penguins, great views and exciting weather but didn't predict industrial archaeology, milk delivered in whisky bottles and seals in the town centre. What a place.
Some more photos from Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence's visit to the Liberation Memorial this morning.
#Falklands
weather showing the place at its best.
#fontsonfriday
with this Norman beauty from All Saints, Lullington, inscribed with "Hoc Fontis Sacro Peveunt Delicta Lavacro", which roughly translates as "in the sacred washing of the font, sins are cleansed".
I arrived here exactly 6 months ago. To celebrate, here's a thread of some things that surprised me:
- one postcode for the whole of the
#Falklands
- expensive fruit and veg 😭
- sheep burn factor in weather forecasts
- sea lions in town
- vultures?!
- incredible sunsets...
This weekend I am on West Falkland. we travelled over on the Concordia Bay ferry, which I love. This afternoon I visited Fox Bay Village for the first time and saw the only post office outside of Stanley.
Waking up to the news that the towers and external walls of
#NotreDame
have been saved. This is extraordinary and gives a base from which rebuilding can begin. I'll be talking about the huge complexities of that on
@BBCRadio4
later this morning. Here's a shot from happier times.
I bought a tiny but incredibly sturdy 4x4 car and drove it 150 miles, to San Carlos and back today. Here's to remembering how to use a clutch after 15 years car-less in London.
#Falklands
#OnThisDay
four years ago I was in Paris and made my first ever visit to Saint-Chapelle, with its 1,113
#stainedglass
windows. Impossible not to be astounded. Which church stopped you in your tracks?
#MondayMotivation
Regularly but rarely the tide in the harbour is so low that you can walk out to the Lady Liz and barely get your feet wet. This year it coincided with
#Christmas
and I jumped at the chance. Photo of me showing how windy it was!
#Falklands
Things we have in the
#Falklands
that surprised me:
- karaoke
- beauty salons
- horse racing
- good (and improving) 4G mobile coverage
- a gin distillery
- a microbrewery
- UK TV and radio channels (thanks
@BFBSRadioHQ
)
- a great library
- a charity shop
The moment of the Christmas lights switch on in Stanley. It was 10pm because we're so near midsummer here in the
#Falklands
that it's light until late. Finally feeling festive!
Remembering, commemorating, celebrating and giving thanks.
#LiberationDay
in the
#Falklands
. Continuous thanks from these Islands to all the veterans who served in '82, all those who gave their lives in that conflict, and those in the Forces defending us today.
Exciting news: works to the runway at Wideawake Airfield on Ascension Island, which closed in 2017, are due to complete at the end of March. Ascension provides a stopover for flights to and from the
#Falklands
and links to
#StHelena
. Hope to visit you soon
@ascension_gov
!
Always a good day in the
#Falklands
when the supply boat arrives, especially as the shops are nearly out of milk and butter... Welcome back MV Unispirit.
West Falkland is very different to East, with a distinct geology and landscapes that remind me of Scotland. Fantastic to spend the weekend at South Harbour with
@KerriWarrah
and get out and about between the rain!
Swimming with dolphins! Yes, that floating head is me, yes the water was freezing, and yes, I was wearing a wetsuit, but these playful dolphins just wanted to be friends and I wasn't going to say no. An unforgettable
#Falklands
experience. Thanks
@Sarah_Stannard
for the photo.
Never knowingly under-fenestrated.
This excessively exuberant facade belongs to No.1 Millbank, home to the Church Commissioners until they sold it to the House of Lords in 2005.
It was designed by W D Caroe and built between the late C19th to 1930. And boy did he like windows.
Herein ends the record of how light is it at 8am in the
#Falklands
because today the sun was actually above the horizon. Sorry to northern hemisphere folks, this means it's all downhill for you from now on...
Happy
#StDavidsDay
. Remembering my last trip to Wales with photos of some gorgeous churches, including St Ellyw's, Llanelieu and St Mary's, Llanfair Kilgedden, both cared for by
@friendschurches
, and
@StDavidsCath
and Newport Cathedral. Can't wait to be back.
For those of you who are interested in life in the City of Stanley here's a bird's-eye view from one of our
@BrittenNorman
Islander planes, run by FIGAS (
@FalklandsGov
Air Service), taken on my way home yesterday.

After a long gap due to bad weather and illness, I made it to the penguins on Yorke Bay today. Delighted to report they are still as charming as ever!

Three months today I first arrived in the

. Still thankful, still in awe, still learning, still getting north and south muddled up.
